Why a UPS?

Why a UPS? Protect, backup, connect

PowerShield sums up what a UPS does in three words: it protects hardware from power problems, provides backup power during outages, and keeps you connected.

Protect

Shields hardware from major power problems, which extends equipment life.

Backup

Keeps equipment running on battery through an outage.

Connect

Keeps you connected to the internet and to the rest of your equipment.

Why power protection matters

  • Even a short outage can damage equipment and force a costly recalibration.
  • Smaller, modern components are less tolerant of power anomalies.
  • A generator takes time to start; without a UPS, equipment still hard-shuts down.
  • With cloud-connected systems, when the equipment is down the business process stops.

Power problems

The 9 power problems and PowerShield's Shield System

PowerShield lists nine power problems a UPS can address: power failure, power sag, power surge, under voltage, over voltage, spikes, frequency drift, switching transients and harmonic distortion.

Short answer

PowerShield groups UPS protection into three levels, its Shield System. Basic protection (standby: Ninja Slimline) solves 3 of the 9 power problems. Enhanced protection (line-interactive with automatic voltage regulation: SafeGuard, Defender, Commander) solves 5 of 9. Premium protection (true online double conversion: Centurion and Centurion RT LiFePO4) solves all 9.

Standby runs on mains until a problem occurs, then switches to battery, with no voltage regulation. Line-interactive adds automatic voltage regulation and suits relatively clean mains in comms closets, server and network rooms and IT enclosures. True online double conversion gives the highest protection, for mission-critical equipment and sites with poor power. Online vs line-interactive explained

Which UPS do I need?

Which PowerShield UPS do I need?

PowerShield groups its UPSs by topology. Start with how critical the load is, then pick the capacity and the form factor that fits the space.

Short answer

For a PC, NAS or small comms cabinet, a line-interactive Defender is enough. For servers, networking and security gear that need a pure sine wave, choose a Commander. For critical loads, generators and remote sites, choose a true online Centurion, or the Centurion RT LiFePO4 for a 60-month warranty and a lighter lithium battery. For a 12V NBN connection box or router, the DC Mini does the job.

Buying guide

Choosing a PowerShield UPS in Australia

Start with the five questions PowerShield asks, then the six decisions that settle most UPS orders. Read the UPS sizing guide

The 5 sizing questions PowerShield asks

  1. Location: metro or regional? Is the power stable?
  2. Load: what does the equipment draw? Check the specifications.
  3. Rack or tower: does it go in a rack, on a desk or on the floor?
  4. Backup time: how long must it keep running?
  5. Criticality: how critical is the equipment?

What determines backup time?

Backup time depends on three things: the capacity of the UPS, the number of batteries in the solution and the equipment load. Adding battery banks is the way to extend it. PowerShield's own example, a Centurion RT 2000 carrying a 1500VA load:

ConfigurationBackup time
Centurion RT 2000 on its own18 minutes
+ 1 battery bank67 minutes
+ 2 battery banks101 minutes

The battery module PowerShield lists for the Centurion RT 2000 is the PSRTBB12. Centurion RT 2000PSRTBB12 battery moduleUPS sizing guideOfficial runtime chartBattery banks and runtime

VA vs watts: size for both

A UPS has a VA rating and a watt rating, and your load must fit under both. PowerShield's rule of thumb: add up the watts of everything you will back up and divide by 0.7, or add the amps and multiply by 220, then pick a UPS with a higher VA rating. Power factor matters: a Defender 1200VA delivers 720W, while a Commander or Centurion 2000VA delivers 1800W.

Topology: standby, line-interactive or online

Standby (Ninja) switches to battery only when mains fails. Line-interactive (SafeGuard, Defender, Commander) uses AVR to correct voltage without draining the battery. True online double conversion (Centurion) rebuilds clean power continuously with zero transfer time, which suits sensitive equipment and generator sites.

Runtime and battery modules

Commander RT and Centurion models take external battery modules for longer runtime: PSRTBB6 for the Centurion RT 1000, PSRTBB8 for the Commander RT 2000 and Centurion RT 2000 Short Base, PSRTBB12 for the Commander RT 3000 and Centurion RT 2000/3000, and 16- or 20-battery banks for the 6kVA and 10kVA long-run models.

Form factor and rack depth

Measure the cabinet first. Defender Rackmount units are 230mm (800VA) and 300mm (1500VA) deep. Centurion RT 1000 is 380mm, Commander RT 2000 and Centurion RT 2000 Short Base 480mm, and the 3000VA RT models 600mm. PSRK rails fit 470 to 780mm racks; PSRK1100 fits up to 1100mm.

Network shutdown and monitoring

SafeGuard, Defender, Commander and Centurion models have USB communication and PowerShield monitoring and shutdown software. For network shutdown add the PSSNMPV4 card (VMware and Hyper-V support, Modbus TCP/IP), the PSEMD temperature and humidity sensor, or an AS400 relay card (DB-9 or terminal connector).

Batteries and replacement

Lead-acid models use 12V 9Ah batteries, with a 10-year design-life option (PSB12-9-10YR); RT models use clamshell cartridges (PSBC2 to PSBC6). PowerShield suggests a check every 3 years. LiFePO4 models offer extended battery life, lighter weight and faster recharge, with 5-year PowerShield cover.

Monitoring

Monitoring and safe shutdown

Every PowerShield UPS ships with NetGuard® software for monitoring and graceful shutdown. Add a communications card for network shutdown, VMware, environmental sensors and dry-contact alarms.

NetGuard software, standard

PowerShield NetGuard® comes standard with every PowerShield UPS: local UPS monitoring, graceful shutdown during an extended outage, and power event logging.

PowerShield Pty Ltd, an Australian-owned power protection company based in Malaga, Western Australia, that has operated since 2000. It designs and supplies UPSs, PDUs, surge protection and batteries for the Australian and Oceania market and is a certified Australian Owned company. PowerShield was an ARN Innovation Awards finalist in 2023 and 2024, an ARN WIICTA finalist in 2025, and is a Battery Stewardship Council member.

If your NBN fibre connection box or router runs from a 12V DC plug pack drawing 18W or less, the PowerShield DC Mini 12V 18W is built for exactly that: routers, modems and fibre ONTs. If the router and phone gear run from mains power, a small AC UPS such as the Ninja Slimline 600VA or a SafeGuard covers them.

For a single NAS or workstation, a Defender tower (USB communication with PowerShield NetGuard software) or, in a comms cabinet, the Defender Rackmount: the 800VA model is 230mm deep and the 1500VA 300mm, both 2U. For servers and deeper racks, pick a Commander RT (pure sine wave) or Centurion RT (online) on the PSRK rail kit, and add the PowerShield SNMP V4 card for network shutdown, including VMware and Hyper-V hosts.

PowerShield lists nine power problems: power failure, power sag, power surge, under voltage, over voltage, spikes, frequency drift, switching transients and harmonic distortion. A standby UPS such as the Ninja Slimline solves 3 of them (failure, sag and surge). A line-interactive UPS (SafeGuard, Defender, Commander) adds automatic voltage regulation for under and over voltage, 5 of 9. A true online double-conversion UPS (Centurion, Centurion RT LiFePO4) converts AC to DC and back continuously, solves all 9 and has zero transfer time to battery.

PowerShield positions its ranges against them: SafeGuard against APC Back-UPS and Eaton 3S, Centurion against APC Smart-UPS RT and Eaton 9PX RT, Centurion RT LiFePO4 against APC Smart-UPS SRT and Eaton 5P Li-Ion, and the three-phase Platinum against APC Symmetra PX and Eaton 9PXM. The difference is local: PowerShield is Australian-owned, with local sales and support for over 20 years and a technical help desk staffed by the people who develop the products.

Yes. PowerShield NetGuard software comes standard with every PowerShield UPS, for local UPS monitoring, graceful shutdown during an extended outage and power event logging. For remote web access, VMware shutdown, environmental monitoring and dry-contact alarms, add a PowerShield communications card such as the SNMP V4.

Backup time depends on the UPS capacity, the number of batteries and the load. On Commander RT and Centurion models you can add battery banks: PowerShield's example is a Centurion RT 2000 carrying 1500VA, which runs 18 minutes on its own, 67 minutes with one battery bank and 101 minutes with two. Long-run Centurion models are built to take larger battery banks.

PowerShield's replacement battery is the 12V 9Ah PSB12-9, or the PSB12-9-10YR with a 10-year design life, which suits all PowerShield lead-acid UPSs; check how many your model takes with PowerShield's battery lookup. Commander RT and Centurion RT models take clamshell battery cartridges such as PSBC4, and their batteries are hot-swappable. PowerShield suggests having the UPS checked every 3 years, and old batteries can be recycled through the B-cycle program.
