Buying guide

Choosing a Western Digital drive in Australia

Six decisions that settle most hard drive orders before anyone opens a datasheet.

CMR, not SMR, for recorders and NAS

Conventional magnetic recording (CMR) keeps write speed steady under constant recording and during RAID rebuilds. Every WD Purple, Purple Pro, Red Plus, Red Pro, Ultrastar, WD Blue and WD_BLACK drive we list is CMR.

Read the guide

Match the workload rating

WD Purple and WD Red Plus are rated for 180TB a year; WD Purple Pro, WD Red Pro and Ultrastar for up to 550TB a year. WD publishes no workload rating for desktop drives, so keep WD Blue and WD_BLACK in PCs.

Read the guide

Let the warranty follow the duty

WD Blue carries a 2-year limited warranty, WD Purple and WD Red Plus 3 years, and WD Purple Pro, WD Red Pro, WD_BLACK and Ultrastar 5 years. A longer warranty usually means the drive is built for harder, longer duty.

Count the bays

WD Red Plus is designed for NAS up to 8 bays; WD Red Pro for any bay count. WD Purple supports up to 8 bays at 1-2TB and 16 bays from 3TB, while WD Purple Pro has no bay limit. Purple Pro and Red Pro add rotational vibration (RV) sensors for busy chassis.

Read the guide

Size capacity from retention

Work out cameras x bitrate x days. One 1080p camera at 3.2 Mbps writes about 35GB a day, so 8 cameras kept for 30 days need roughly 8.3TB. For a NAS, add today's data, two to three years of growth and the RAID overhead.

Surveillance, NAS or desktop?

Pick the family by the device the drive lives in: NVR or DVR, WD Purple; NAS, WD Red Plus or Red Pro; desktop PC, WD Blue or WD_BLACK; server, Ultrastar; backups you carry, WD Elements.

We supply WD Purple, WD Purple Pro, WD Red Plus, WD Red Pro, WD Blue, WD_BLACK, Ultrastar and WD Elements drives to home buyers, installers, IT providers and businesses.

Western Digital's limited warranty depends on the range: WD Blue 2 years; WD Purple and WD Red Plus 3 years; WD Purple Pro, WD Red Pro, WD_BLACK and Ultrastar 5 years; WD Elements Portable USB-C 3 years, and WD Elements Portable USB 3.0 and Elements Desktop 2 years. WD Purple is built for surveillance recorders: AllFrame firmware reduces dropped frames while many camera streams write around the clock. WD Red Plus and WD Red Pro are built for NAS: NASware firmware tunes the drive for RAID and multi-user file access. Use WD Purple in an NVR or DVR and WD Red in a NAS.

Every WD Purple, WD Purple Pro, WD Red Plus, WD Red Pro, Ultrastar, WD Blue and WD_BLACK internal drive we list uses CMR (conventional magnetic recording), as published by Western Digital. Some older plain WD Red and a few WD Blue models use SMR, which is a poor fit for NVRs and RAID. Check the recording technology on the product page.

Yes. Installers, integrators, MSPs and IT providers can open a trade account for trade pricing, and we quote multi-site CCTV and NAS projects as one order, together with the recorders, NAS units and network gear.

WD Purple is a standard 3.5-inch SATA drive and Western Digital tests it for compatibility with a wide range of security systems. Check the maximum capacity per bay in your NVR datasheet. WD Purple 1-2TB is rated for recorders with up to 8 bays and 3TB and larger for up to 16; WD Purple Pro has no bay limit.

WD Red Plus suits home and small-office NAS with up to 8 bays. WD Red Pro suits larger, busier or rack-mount NAS with any number of bays, and Ultrastar suits high-capacity arrays. Western Digital tests WD Red with a wide range of NAS vendors; always check your NAS maker's compatibility list as well.

WD Elements Portable USB-C drives come formatted exFAT and work with Windows 10 and later and macOS 11 and later out of the box. WD Elements Portable USB 3.0 and WD Elements Desktop drives are formatted for Windows, so reformat them in Disk Utility before using them on a Mac. Reformatting erases the drive.
