One operating system, from a $70 router to a 100G core

The reason MikroTik has the following it does in Australia is RouterOS. Every device runs the same OS with the same feature set — BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VRF, IPsec and WireGuard VPN, queueing, hotspot and firewall — with no feature licensing tiers to buy and no subscription. What you learn on a hEX applies unchanged to a Cloud Core Router.

That makes it the default choice for WISPs, ISPs and integrators who need real routing at a price that does not scale with feature count, and increasingly for businesses that want proper VPN and traffic control without a recurring licence. Choosing MikroTik hardware in Australia

Size on throughput, not port count

MikroTik publishes real test results per model. A hEX handles a typical NBN service comfortably; an RB5009 will route multi-gigabit; a CCR is what you need once you are terminating BGP or pushing past 10G. Tell us the service speed and the features you need enabled and we will point at the right tier — firewall and queueing cost CPU, so headline figures assume a simple config.

Check the RouterOS licence level

Most hardware ships with the licence it needs, but the level caps things like the number of simultaneous tunnels and whether the device can act as a full router. Licence level is listed on every product page here.

AU variants matter

MikroTik ships region-specific models. Wireless SKUs differ by regulatory band and power, and AU stock comes with the right power lead. Buying grey import saves a little and costs you the warranty and, on wireless, sometimes the legality of the configuration.

SFP optics are not interchangeable by default

MikroTik switches and routers accept standard SFP/SFP+/QSFP optics, but the module has to match the fibre type and distance at both ends. We stock matched MikroTik optics and DACs — buy them with the switch and the link comes up first time.

PoE in and PoE out

Many MikroTik devices can be powered by PoE and several can pass PoE through to the next device. That is genuinely useful on masts and outdoor runs, but check the voltage range — MikroTik passive PoE is not always 802.3af/at, and connecting the two incorrectly can damage hardware.

MikroTik in Australia — common questions

Is MikroTik hardware available in Australia?
Yes. ARC IP Networks carries the MikroTik range as genuine Australian stock with Australian warranty and AU power leads. Buying local stock also means the wireless models are the correct regulatory variant for Australia.
What is RouterOS and does it cost extra?
RouterOS is MikroTik's operating system and it runs on every device they make. The licence is included with the hardware — there is no subscription and no per-feature licensing. The licence level varies by model and caps certain limits; the level is listed on each product page.
What is WinBox?
WinBox is MikroTik's configuration tool — a small Windows application that connects to the device by IP or MAC address and gives you the full RouterOS interface. It is the standard way to configure MikroTik hardware.
Which MikroTik router should I buy?
For a typical NBN connection a hEX or hAP ax is plenty. For multi-gigabit services or heavy firewall and VPN use, look at the RB5009 or L009. For BGP, an ISP core or anything past 10G, you are into the Cloud Core Router range. Throughput depends on the configuration, so ask us if the choice is close.
Do MikroTik switches run RouterOS?
The CRS (Cloud Router Switch) range runs RouterOS and can route as well as switch. The CSS and netPower ranges run SwOS, a lighter switch-only operating system. Both are managed; only RouterOS gives you the full routing feature set.
Is MikroTik good for a WISP or ISP?
It is one of the most widely deployed platforms in that market in Australia, largely because BGP, MPLS, OSPF and full queueing are included at every price point rather than sold as licence tiers. The CCR range is built specifically for that role.
Can I use third-party SFP modules in MikroTik switches?
Generally yes — MikroTik ports accept standard SFP, SFP+ and QSFP optics. The module still has to match the fibre type and distance at both ends. We stock matched MikroTik optics and DACs, which removes the most common cause of a link not coming up.
What warranty applies to MikroTik bought in Australia?
Genuine Australian stock carries the full manufacturer's warranty. Grey-import hardware bought overseas generally does not, which is the main reason to buy locally.
