Why MikroTik routing

One feature set, priced by throughput

MikroTik does not tier features by price. A hEX at the bottom of the range runs the same BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VPN and firewall stack as a Cloud Core Router at the top. What you pay for is throughput — CPU cores, clock speed and hardware offloading — and port count and type.

That is why MikroTik dominates among Australian WISPs, ISPs and integrators: you can learn the platform on a cheap box and deploy the same configuration on a core router. Configuration is through WinBox, WebFig or CLI.

How to choose a MikroTik router

Size on throughput, not ports

MikroTik publishes per-model test results. A hEX handles a typical NBN service; an RB5009 routes multi-gigabit; a CCR is what you need for BGP or past 10G. Firewall rules, queueing and VPN all cost CPU, so headline figures assume a simple configuration — tell us what you are enabling.

Hardware offloading is the CCR difference

The CCR2216 and CCR2116 use a switch chip that does L3 forwarding in hardware. That is how they hold 100 Gigabit line rate where a software-only router would be CPU-bound.

Check the RouterOS licence level

Hardware ships with the licence it needs, but the level caps things like simultaneous tunnels. The level is listed on every product page here.

PoE in and PoE out

Many models can be powered over Ethernet and several pass PoE through. Check the voltage range — MikroTik passive PoE is not always 802.3af/at and mixing them incorrectly can damage hardware.

MikroTik routers — questions

Which MikroTik router is best for NBN?
For a standard NBN service a hEX or hAP ax is plenty. If you have NBN Enterprise Ethernet or any service above a gigabit, you need the RB5009 or L009, which have 2.5 Gigabit and SFP+ ports.
What is the difference between hEX and RB5009?
Both run identical RouterOS. The RB5009 has a much faster quad-core 1.4 GHz CPU, a 2.5 Gigabit port and an SFP+ cage, so it routes multi-gigabit where a hEX tops out around 1 Gbps.
Do I need a Cloud Core Router?
Only if you are terminating BGP, running an ISP or WISP core, or pushing beyond 10 Gigabit. For everything else an RB5009 is faster than most Australian internet services can fill.
Does RouterOS cost extra?
No. The licence is included with the hardware — no subscription and no per-feature licensing. Only the licence level varies by model.
Can MikroTik routers do VPN?
Yes — IPsec, OpenVPN, L2TP, PPTP, SSTP and WireGuard, on every model. Throughput depends on the CPU, so VPN-heavy sites should size up.
Is MikroTik hardware covered by Australian warranty?
Yes when bought as Australian stock, which is what we supply. Grey imports generally are not.
