Why cellular

When there is no fixed line — or you cannot risk losing it

MikroTik cellular hardware runs the same RouterOS as the rest of the range, so the LTE router is also a full router — firewall, VPN, failover and queueing included. That matters for the two common jobs: primary connectivity where there is no fixed line, and failover where losing the link costs money.

Outdoor models (LHG LTE, SXT LTE, ATL 5G, LAMP 5G) put the modem and antenna at the top of the mast where the signal is, rather than running coax down to an indoor unit — usually the difference between a workable link and a marginal one.

Buying guide

Choosing an LTE or 5G router in Australia

Put the modem where the signal is

An outdoor unit on the mast almost always beats an indoor router with an external antenna, because you are not losing signal down a coax run. If the site is marginal, this is the single biggest improvement available.

Check the band support against your carrier

Australian carriers use specific LTE and 5G bands. A model sold for another region may not support the bands your carrier uses here — another reason to buy AU stock. Tell us the carrier and we will confirm before you order.

Failover is built in

RouterOS handles multi-WAN failover natively, so an LTE router can sit behind a fixed service and take over automatically. No extra licence, no separate appliance.

5G is not automatically better

If the site has good LTE and no 5G coverage, a 5G router buys you nothing. Check carrier coverage at the actual address before paying for 5G hardware.

MikroTik LTE and 5G — questions

Will a MikroTik LTE router work on Australian carriers?
Yes, provided the model supports the bands your carrier uses. Australian stock is specified for local bands. Tell us the carrier and site and we will confirm before you order.
Should I choose an indoor or outdoor LTE unit?
Outdoor, if the signal is marginal. Mounting the modem at the antenna avoids coax loss and usually outperforms an indoor router with an external antenna.
Can a MikroTik LTE router be used as internet failover?
Yes. RouterOS includes multi-WAN failover, so the LTE link takes over automatically when the primary service drops. No extra licence is needed.
Do I need 5G or is LTE enough?
Only if the site actually has 5G coverage. Check the carrier map at the exact address — on many Australian sites a well-mounted LTE unit outperforms a poorly-sited 5G one.
Do these support eSIM?
Some models do, including parts of the 5G range. It is listed per product; ask us if it is a requirement.
