What the ports are for
The 2.5G port is the natural WAN for a 2.5G fibre or NBN Enterprise Ethernet handoff, and the SFP+ cage is either a 10G uplink to a core switch or a second fibre WAN. The seven Gigabit ports serve as a small switch for the local segment, and the USB 3.0 port takes storage for logs, containers or The Dude.
RB5009 versus hEX
The hEX (E50UG) is a dual-core 950 MHz router with 512 MB RAM and five Gigabit ports on a level 4 licence. For a single NBN service with a couple of VPN tunnels it is the right, cheaper buy. The RB5009 earns its price when the WAN is gigabit or faster, when you terminate many tunnels, when you want containers, or when you simply want to configure the router once and forget it for years.
RB5009 versus RB4011 and L009
The RB4011iGS+RM still has a place when you need ten Gigabit ports on one router. The L009UiGS-RM is the value rack router: eight Gigabit ports, an SFP cage that takes 2.5G modules and PoE in and out, on a dual-core ARM CPU. If the CPU load is light and you need ports, choose an L009 or RB4011; if the CPU load is the point, choose the RB5009.

Same router, different powering. The UG+S+IN takes 802.3af/at PoE-in on ether1 or DC power. The UPr+S+IN adds 802.3af/at PoE-out and PoE-in on all eight Ethernet ports so it can power radios, APs and cameras directly, with a 150 W maximum draw.
Yes, if you have a fast connection or a lab. With a quad-core 1.4 GHz ARM CPU, 1 GB RAM, a 2.5G port and a 10G SFP+ cage it is more router than most homes need, which is exactly why home-lab users like it. For a standard NBN service a hEX or hAP ax2 is enough.
Buy the hEX for a single NBN service and basic VPN. Buy the RB5009 if your WAN is 1 Gbps or more, you have a 2.5G or 10G handoff, you run many VPN tunnels, or you want container support and headroom for years.
The RB4011 has ten Gigabit ports and one SFP+; the RB5009 has seven Gigabit, one 2.5G and one SFP+ with a newer ARM CPU and a smaller case (four fit in 1U). Choose the RB4011 only when you need the extra Gigabit ports.
