Matching the module to the port, the fibre and the distance
An SFP or QSFP module has to match three things at both ends of the link: the port speed the switch or router expects, the fibre type in the ground (single-mode or multi-mode), and the distance between the two ends. Getting any one of these wrong is the most common reason a fibre link shows a physical connection but never comes up, or comes up at the wrong speed.

Single-mode modules use a narrower fibre core and a laser tuned for long-distance runs, typically 10 km to 80 km depending on the model. Multi-mode modules are cheaper and used for shorter runs, usually under 500 m, common inside a single building or data hall.
Generally yes, as long as the module standard (SFP, SFP+, QSFP28) and the optical specification match on both ends. MikroTik modules follow standard MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) specifications, so they are not locked to MikroTik hardware.
The most common causes are a speed mismatch (one end negotiated 1G, the other 2.5G), a distance mismatch (a short-reach module on a long run), or dirty fibre connectors. RouterOS DDM diagnostics on genuine MikroTik optics show TX and RX power levels, which usually identifies the fault quickly.
