Short answer: for a vaccine or medical fridge, PowerShield recommends the Commander RT 2000VA (PSCRT2000). It is a pure sine wave UPS that runs from a standard 10 A GPO and handles compressor start-up surges. It scales with the PSRTBB8 battery module when you need longer backup. Size runtime from the fridge’s 24-hour energy use (kWh), then add the SNMP card so staff are alerted the moment mains power fails.

Why medical refrigeration needs a UPS
Medical refrigeration is critical in hospitals, pharmacies, doctors’ surgeries and laboratories. PowerShield’s point is that without a proactive approach to power resilience, these systems are exposed to unexpected outages. The result can be spoilage, compliance problems and risk to patients. A fridge full of vaccines or life-saving medicines can be worth far more than the UPS that protects it.
PowerShield’s UPS solutions provide regulated, reliable power during outages. They protect business continuity and patient wellbeing. In practice, a UPS does two jobs for a cold chain:
- It bridges the outage, so the compressor keeps cycling and the fridge holds the temperature range it is set to maintain.
- It cleans the supply all the time, so sags, surges and voltage swings do not stress the fridge’s compressor and controller.
The 9 power problems and the Shield System
PowerShield lists nine power problems: power failure, sag, surge, under voltage, over voltage, spikes, frequency drift, switching transients and harmonic distortion. The Shield System maps each UPS type to how many it solves:
| Protection level | Power problems solved | PowerShield series |
|---|---|---|
| Standby (Basic Protection) | 3 of 9: power failure, power sag, power surge | Ninja Slimline (no voltage regulation) |
| Line-interactive (Enhanced Protection) | 5 of 9: adds under voltage and over voltage, corrected by AVR | SafeGuard, Defender, Commander |
| True online double conversion (Premium Protection) | 9 of 9: adds spikes, frequency drift, switching transients and harmonic distortion | Centurion tower and rack (three-phase Centurion Pro and Platinum on project quote) |

The Commander RT sits in the line-interactive tier, with AVR and pure sine wave output. Where the mains are poor, or a generator takes over, an online Centurion covers all nine problems.
What PowerShield checked across fridge brands
PowerShield analysed the power needs of medical refrigeration across several manufacturers to design a scalable, purpose-fit solution. Its key considerations:
- Power compatibility: most units run from a 10 A AS/NZS general power outlet (GPO).
- Capacity and temperature: vaccine fridges across brands have similar power demands for a given volume (litres) and temperature range.
- Load handling: the UPS must support every duty cycle, including compressor start-up surges.
- Scalable battery runtime: shorter or longer backup, based on the fridge’s 24-hour kWh data.
- Reliability and maintenance: built for critical environments, with battery maintenance in-house teams can handle.
- Low ambient noise: models with status-based fan operation cut unnecessary noise in patient areas.

Recommended PowerShield UPS by medical scenario
Pharmacy, GP or clinic vaccine fridge
PowerShield recommends the Commander RT 2000VA (PSCRT2000) as a robust, scalable UPS for healthcare settings. It is rated 2000VA / 1800W with pure sine wave output, boost and buck AVR and a 0.9 output power factor. It plugs into a 10 A outlet, has programmable outlets and EPO, and stands as a tower or mounts in a 2U rack (480 mm deep, 22 kg). USB and RS-232 are standard and NetGuard monitoring software is included.
Longer backup for after-hours outages
The Commander RT 2000VA is expandable. Each PSRTBB8 extended battery module adds eight 12 V 9 Ah batteries in a 2U, 480 mm deep chassis. This is how PowerShield’s “scalable battery runtime” works in practice: the same UPS, with as many modules as your fridge’s energy use and outage risk call for.
Battery maintenance by in-house teams
The Commander RT uses a hot-swappable battery design. When batteries reach end of life, the PSBC4 clamshell battery cartridge (four 12 V 9 Ah batteries) suits the PSCRT2000; the PSRTBB8 takes two. Staff can swap a cartridge without unplugging the fridge.
Regional clinics and generator-backed sites
PowerShield lists the online Centurion tower for protecting medical devices, and tags the Centurion 2000VA (PSCE2000) for medical, country and critical environments. Online double conversion solves all nine power problems and is generator compatible. In a rack, the Centurion RT 2000VA does the same job. For fewer battery replacements, the Centurion RT LiFePO4 2000VA carries a 5-year warranty.
Alerts and monitoring
Add the PSSNMPV4 SNMP card so the UPS can send alerts over the network when mains power fails or batteries run low. The PSEMD sensor reports room temperature and humidity and has two dry-contact inputs. It monitors the room, not the inside of the fridge, so keep your fridge’s own data logger in place.

Runtime planning for cold-chain fridges
Size a fridge UPS on energy over time, not just the nameplate. A compressor cycles on and off, so the average draw is lower than the start-up peak. Plan it in four steps:
- Average load: take the fridge’s 24-hour energy use in kWh (from the manufacturer or a plug-in meter). Average watts = kWh per 24 hours × 1000 ÷ 24.
- Peak load: make sure the UPS VA and watt rating covers the compressor start-up surge. PowerShield’s recommended model for a fridge is the 2000VA / 1800W Commander RT.
- Target backup time: decide how long the fridge must ride through, such as overnight or until staff can move stock.
- Battery modules: match the number of PSRTBB8 modules to that time, using PowerShield’s selection tool and our support.
Keep batteries healthy too. PowerShield’s warranty requires stored batteries to be fully recharged at least every six months, and it notes that no UPS is a failsafe device. That is why critical cold chains should also use alarms and monitoring. For the method, read our UPS sizing guide and battery bank runtime guide.

Common questions
Straight answers from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.
PowerShield recommends the Commander RT 2000VA (PSCRT2000) for medical refrigeration. It is a robust, scalable pure sine wave UPS that runs from a 10 A outlet and can be extended with PSRTBB8 battery modules.
It must. PowerShield lists load handling, including compressor start-up surges, as a key requirement for medical refrigeration. Its recommended model for medical refrigeration is the 2000VA / 1800W Commander RT (PSCRT2000).
It depends on the fridge’s 24-hour energy use and the number of battery modules. PowerShield sizes backup time from 24-hour kWh data, and its selection tool shows the recommended solution and backup times for a given fridge.
Yes. PowerShield notes most medical refrigeration units run from a 10 A AS/NZS GPO, and the Commander RT 2000VA (PSCRT2000) takes a 10 A input.
Yes, with the PowerShield SNMP card V4 (PSSNMPV4) fitted. It sends network alerts and supports remote monitoring. The PSEMD sensor adds room temperature and humidity monitoring.
The Commander RT has hot-swappable batteries, and the PSBC4 clamshell cartridge suits the PSCRT2000, so in-house teams can replace batteries without switching off the fridge.
