Why marine equipment needs a UPS
The marine industry depends on reliable equipment that often runs in harsh environments. PowerShield warns that power outages can damage critical equipment and affect navigation and communication controls. As new technology arrives onshore and offshore, keeping supply reliable gets harder. Input power may carry disturbances that damage equipment and cause it to fail, and a UPS provides the clean power that smooth operations rely on.
PowerShield’s Australian-designed products cover a wide range of marine loads:
- navigation, safety and security equipment
- lighting and computer systems
- special on-board systems on vessels
The aim is consistent power, power management, remote monitoring and local support, so crews and operators have peace of mind. The same thinking applies on shore, in radio, dispatch and coast-station racks.
The 9 power problems at sea and on shore
PowerShield lists nine power problems: power failure, sag, surge, under voltage, over voltage, spikes, frequency drift, switching transients and harmonic distortion. PowerShield notes that marine input power may carry disturbances that damage equipment. The Shield System shows which UPS type fixes which problems:
| Protection level | Power problems solved | PowerShield series |
|---|---|---|
| Standby (Basic Protection) | 3 of 9: power failure, power sag, power surge | Ninja Slimline (no voltage regulation) |
| Line-interactive (Enhanced Protection) | 5 of 9: adds under voltage and over voltage, corrected by AVR | SafeGuard, Defender, Commander |
| True online double conversion (Premium Protection) | 9 of 9: adds spikes, frequency drift, switching transients and harmonic distortion | Centurion tower and rack (three-phase Centurion Pro and Platinum on project quote) |

That is why PowerShield’s marine best sellers are all Centurion online models: online double conversion is the only tier that solves all nine. Line-interactive Commander RT models suit shore-side racks on clean mains.
Recommended PowerShield UPS by marine scenario
Bridge, navigation and communications racks
The Centurion RT is PowerShield’s highest power density single-phase online UPS. It mounts in 2U or stands as a tower, is generator compatible, and has programmable outlets so critical loads get longer backup. Its batteries are hot-swappable. Choose the PSCERT1000 (1000VA / 900W, 380 mm deep), PSCERT2000 (2000VA / 1800W) or PSCERT3000 (3000VA / 2700W, 15 A plug). Add the PSRK rail kit for rack mounting. The lithium Centurion RT LiFePO4 2000VA weighs 14.6 kg against 26.5 kg for the lead-acid PSCERT2000, and carries a 5-year warranty.
Consoles and cabinets without a rack
The Centurion tower is on PowerShield’s marine best-seller list. The PSCE2000 and PSCE3000 are tagged for mine/sea, industrial, country, medical and critical environments. They offer a wide input voltage range, 0.98 input power factor correction, a 50/60 Hz frequency converter mode and an extendable maintenance bypass. The PSCE1000 is a compact 397 × 145 × 220 mm tower for smaller consoles.
Radio over IP and coast stations
Marine Rescue WA monitors radio traffic along more than 20,000 km of Western Australian coastline. Its radio over IP network was built by Direct Communications, and each of its 44 rack servers is protected by a PowerShield Commander RT 2000VA. The case study notes the expandable Commander RT met future demands through extra battery modules. Today’s equivalent is the PSCRT2000: pure sine wave, 1800W, 2U, 480 mm deep. Add the PSRTBB8 module for more runtime. Read our Marine Rescue WA case study summary.
Remote monitoring and maintenance
Every PowerShield UPS includes NetGuard software. The PSSNMPV4 SNMP card adds browser access, alerts and scheduled shutdowns for unattended racks and vessels. For 1 to 2kVA Centurion RT and Commander RT units, the PSMBS2K bypass with 7-outlet PDU lets you service the UPS without dropping the load. The PSMBSR10K on PowerShield’s marine page covers 6 to 10kVA UPSs.
Specialist marine lines on project quote
PowerShield’s marine page also lists its 16 A and 63 A surge filters. Its range includes Centurion 110 V UPSs, and it offers conformal coating for dusty, humid conditions. These are available on project quote from ARC IP Networks.

Sizing a marine UPS
Work through PowerShield’s sizing questions: how stable the supply is, the load in watts, rack or tower, the backup time needed and how critical the equipment is. On a vessel, also check the space, the mounting position and the outlet type available. A 3000VA model needs a 15 A outlet. Runtime depends on UPS capacity, battery count and load. In PowerShield’s example, a Centurion RT 2000VA at a 1500VA load runs 18 minutes alone, 67 with one battery bank and 101 with two. See our UPS sizing guide and battery bank runtime guide.
