Short answer: mine sites and remote operations need true online double conversion. Use the Centurion RT in racks and the Centurion tower where there is no rack. PowerShield lists the Centurion tower for remote locations 30+ km from the city grid, for light to heavy industrial environments and for sites with generators. For bigger loads, the hardwired Centurion 6000VA pairs with battery banks and an interlocked maintenance bypass. Conformal coating and three-phase systems are available on project quote.

Why mining needs fit-for-purpose UPS design
PowerShield’s mining guidance is direct: reliable power distribution is essential in metals and mining, and UPS use on site has grown in volume and in rated power. But not every UPS is suitable for connection to a site’s electrical installation. The installation must be designed to be fit for purpose and must meet the site’s design requirements so safety levels are maintained.
That is why PowerShield backs its UPSs with detailed installation manuals and local engineering support in Perth, working with professional installers. Its UPSs are designed by Australian engineers for Australian conditions. PowerShield’s first sizing question is whether a site is metro or regional, because that decides how stable the supply is. And on sites with a generator, the generator takes time to start; without a UPS, equipment still hard-shuts down in that gap.
The 9 power problems on a mine site
PowerShield lists nine power problems: power failure, sag, surge, under voltage, over voltage, spikes, frequency drift, switching transients and harmonic distortion. The Shield System shows which UPS topology fixes which of them:
| Protection level | Power problems solved | PowerShield series |
|---|---|---|
| Standby (Basic Protection) | 3 of 9: power failure, power sag, power surge | Ninja Slimline (no voltage regulation) |
| Line-interactive (Enhanced Protection) | 5 of 9: adds under voltage and over voltage, corrected by AVR | SafeGuard, Defender, Commander |
| True online double conversion (Premium Protection) | 9 of 9: adds spikes, frequency drift, switching transients and harmonic distortion | Centurion tower and rack (three-phase Centurion Pro and Platinum on project quote) |

For mining, PowerShield promotes the Centurion online range, because only online double conversion covers all nine problems. Its tower models add a wide input voltage range, 0.98 input power factor correction and a 50/60 Hz frequency converter mode.
Recommended PowerShield UPS by mining scenario
Site office, control room and comms racks
The Centurion RT is PowerShield’s highest power density single-phase online UPS. It is generator compatible, has programmable outlets and hot-swappable batteries, and fits a 2U rack space or stands as a tower. Choose the PSCERT1000 (900W), PSCERT2000 (1800W) or PSCERT3000 (2700W; needs a 15 A outlet). The lithium Centurion RT LiFePO4 3000VA adds non-flammable cells, three times faster recharge and a 5-year warranty. That suits sites where every battery change means a long drive or a flight.
Field cabinets, crib rooms and demountables
Where there is no rack, the Centurion tower range is the PowerShield choice. Product pages list it for critical power, remote locations 30+ km from the city grid, light to heavy industrial environments, sites with generators and remote connectivity. The PSCE2000 and PSCE3000 are tagged for country, critical, industrial, medical and mine/sea environments. Sizes run from the PSCE1000 (1000VA / 900W, 12.5 kg) to the PSCE3000 (3000VA / 2700W, 28 kg). Battery banks plug in to extend backup time.
Larger loads: 6kVA hardwired
The Centurion 6000VA (PSCE6000) is a hardwired tower rated 6000VA / 6000W with 20 internal batteries. PowerShield offers N+X parallel redundancy on 6K and 10K models. In a rack, the Centurion RT 6000VA Long Run (PSCERT6000L) pairs with the PSCERBB20 battery module (3U, 20 × 12 V 9 Ah, 10-year design life) or the PSRTBB16. The PS6KRN4U bundle packs the PSCERT6000L, PSRTBB16, rails and SNMP card together. Hardwired units must be connected by a professional installer. Under PowerShield’s warranty, hardwired products above 3kVA get on-site repair in Australian capital city metro areas; remote installations may need to go back to a service centre.
Maintenance bypass and distribution
An interlocked bypass keeps loads running while a UPS or its batteries are serviced. The PSMBSW10K is a wall-mount 1:1 bypass for 6kVA or 10kVA UPSs. The PSMBSR10K is a 2U rack bypass. Its mechanical safety microswitch and static bypass activation prevent incorrect switching sequences. Add the PSPDU10K PDU (8 × C13, 4 × C19). For 1kVA to 3kVA Centurion RT and Commander RT units, use the PSMBS2K or PSMBS3K.
Remote monitoring for unattended sites
Every PowerShield UPS includes NetGuard software. The PSSNMPV4 SNMP card adds web access, scheduled shutdowns and Modbus TCP/IP. The PSEMD sensor reports cabinet temperature and humidity. The PSAS400T relay card gives dry-contact alarm outputs on a terminal connector for a PLC or alarm panel.

Conformal coating for dust and humidity
Condensation forms on components when humidity is high and the temperature drops fast. That happens when the outside temperature drops suddenly, or simply from cooling fans creating a large temperature difference inside the equipment. On mine sites the dust often has metallic qualities. Moisture plus conductive dust leads to corrosion and short circuits, and electronics fail well before their expected life.
For UPSs exposed to high dust with sustained high humidity, PowerShield offers conformal coating. Every printed circuit board, including the backplane, is coated with a military-specified coating containing corrosion inhibitors. Internal plugs and sockets are protected, and external connectors get a thin film of synthetic grease. PowerShield performs the service to the ASTM B826-03 and ISA 71.04 procedures. It states the coating reduces the corrosion that causes up to 60% of failures in dusty, humid environments. Conformal coating and three-phase Centurion Pro systems are available on project quote.

Sizing and runtime for remote sites
Start with PowerShield’s sizing questions: how stable the power is (metro or regional), the load in watts, rack or tower, the backup time needed and how critical the equipment is. On a generator-backed site, the UPS only needs to carry the load until the generator is stable. On a site with no generator, size for the longest outage you plan to ride through.
Runtime depends on UPS capacity, battery count and load. In PowerShield’s example, a Centurion RT 2000VA at a 1500VA load runs 18 minutes alone, 67 minutes with one battery bank and 101 minutes with two. Centurion battery banks are available with an internal charger for fast recharge, even with large banks. Use our UPS sizing guide and battery bank runtime guide, or send us the load and we will size it.
