Power Protection for Defence in Australia: Rugged LiFePO4 UPS

Rugged PowerShield power for deployable and fixed defence systems: Centurion RT LiFePO4 proven in Daronmont testing, ADF-approved high-security SNMP, conformal coating and Nova MIL-STD power.

Short answer: for deployable and fixed defence systems, the stocked PowerShield choice is the Centurion RT LiFePO4, a lithium true online UPS with a 5-year warranty. Daronmont Technologies tested it with conformal coating. It passed every overload test and ran fully after being frozen to -30 °C, the only UPS in the test to meet all project requirements. Add the SNMP card V4 for monitoring. ADF-approved high-security SNMP cards, conformal coating and MIL-qualified rugged power sources from PowerShield’s partner Nova Electric are available on project quote.

ARC IP Networks is a trusted PowerShield supplier in Australia: genuine stock at competitive prices, with the full PowerShield Australian warranty, Australia-wide delivery and trade pricing.

What PowerShield offers defence

PowerShield supplies a complete range of power protection for harsh-environment military, commercial and industrial applications. That runs from power filters to true online double conversion UPS systems. Its defence page says it provides power protection to meet specific requirements, including compliance with military environmental and electrical standards, and it runs a dedicated defence site at defence.powershield.com.au.

PowerShield is Australian-owned, operating since 2000 from Malaga, Western Australia. Its technical help desk is staffed by the people who develop the products. That matters when a defence integrator needs answers on in-rush current, temperature range or secure network management.

The 9 power problems in the field

PowerShield lists nine power problems: power failure, sag, surge, under voltage, over voltage, spikes, frequency drift, switching transients and harmonic distortion. Deployed systems often run from generators. PowerShield’s training notes generators take time to start, and without a UPS equipment still hard-shuts down. The Shield System shows which UPS type fixes what:

Protection levelPower problems solvedPowerShield series
Standby (Basic Protection)3 of 9: power failure, power sag, power surgeNinja Slimline (no voltage regulation)
Line-interactive (Enhanced Protection)5 of 9: adds under voltage and over voltage, corrected by AVRSafeGuard, Defender, Commander
True online double conversion (Premium Protection)9 of 9: adds spikes, frequency drift, switching transients and harmonic distortionCenturion tower and rack (three-phase Centurion Pro and Platinum on project quote)

For mission-critical command, control and communications equipment, only the online double conversion tier covers all nine problems. Every UPS recommended here is a Centurion online model.

Proven in Australian defence testing: Daronmont

Daronmont Technologies is a wholly Australian-owned defence industry SME. It is the prime systems integrator for a range of deployable military command and control capabilities, and a contractor to Defence’s CASG. Many of its deployable systems had older UPSs due for refresh. It needed UPSs for air, land and maritime systems that could support the high in-rush currents of modern computing and operate from -30 °C to 50 °C.

The PowerShield Centurion RT LiFePO4 3000VA was tested after protective conformal coating. It passed all overload testing for the critical loads. After being frozen to -30 °C it operated fully, and it was the only UPS tested to pass all of the project’s requirements.

“Through exhaustive testing, Daronmont has proven the ability of the Centurion LiFePO4 UPS to meet the exacting requirements of our ADF customers.”

Deployable shelters, vehicles and transit cases

The Centurion RT LiFePO4 combines true online double conversion with lithium-iron phosphate batteries. PowerShield quotes non-flammable cells, three times faster recharge, about one-third lighter weight and 50% savings over the life of the UPS, with a 5-year warranty. Each model is 2U, works as rack or tower, and has an 8 A charger. Choose the PSLCERT1000 (900W, 10.2 kg), PSLCERT2000 (1800W, 14.6 kg) or PSLCERT3000 (2700W, 19.7 kg). Conformal coating, as on the Daronmont unit, is available on project quote.

Fixed bases, training facilities and comms rooms

For permanent racks, the lead-acid Centurion RT (PSCERT2000, PSCERT3000) is generator compatible and expandable with the PSRTBB12 battery module. The Centurion RT 3000VA Network Ready bundle (PS3KRN2U) adds the PSRK rail kit and SNMP card V4 in one order.

Secure network management

Every PowerShield UPS includes NetGuard software. The PSSNMPV4 SNMP card adds browser access, scheduled shutdowns, start-ups and reboots, VMware and Hyper-V support, and Modbus TCP/IP. For networks that need more security, PowerShield’s SNMP cards also come in a high-security grade “as approved by the Australian Defence Force”. Its Cyber-Secure SNMP card is made in Germany and the USA and supports RADIUS and LDAP. PowerShield states it follows current cyber-security protocols and Department of Defence and Australian Signals Directorate regulations. Both are available on project quote.

MIL-standard rugged AC power

PowerShield has a strategic partnership with Nova Electric, which has built rugged AC power sources since 1966. According to PowerShield’s defence page, Nova’s rugged AC power sources have been qualified to MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-167, MIL-S-901, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-740 and MIL-STD-1399. Some have been on active duty for 40+ years. The Nova range includes true online UPSs, pure sine wave DC-AC inverters, solid-state frequency converters, PDUs, custom EMI filters and maintenance bypass switches. Its modular design uses field-replaceable subassemblies for a low mean time to repair (MTTR). These qualifications belong to the Nova products. Nova, ruggedised and 110 V systems are available on project quote.

Sizing for deployed loads

Daronmont’s brief shows what to size for. Make sure the UPS handles the in-rush current of the computing load, not just its steady draw. Confirm the operating temperature range the system must meet. Then set the backup time needed to bridge a generator start or changeover. PowerShield’s sizing questions also cover power stability, the load in watts, rack or tower and how critical the equipment is. In PowerShield’s runtime example, a Centurion RT 2000VA at a 1500VA load runs 18 minutes alone and 67 minutes with one battery bank. Read our UPS sizing guide and battery bank runtime guide, and compare chemistries in lithium vs lead-acid UPS batteries.
