WiFi 6 vs WiFi 6E vs WiFi 7 — should you upgrade?

WiFi 6 (U6 series) remains excellent value and is more than enough for most homes and offices — faster and more efficient than WiFi 5 with wide device support. WiFi 6E (U6-Enterprise) adds the 6 GHz band, which is completely clear of legacy congestion — ideal for dense offices with a lot of competing networks nearby. WiFi 7 (U7 series) is Ubiquiti's current generation — faster theoretical speeds, better multi-device performance and, on the higher-end models, 2.5GbE or 10GbE uplinks to actually make use of it. Upgrade to WiFi 7 if you're buying new anyway or have WiFi 7-capable client devices; WiFi 6 is still a perfectly sound, cheaper choice if your devices are WiFi 5/6.

WiFi 6 / WiFi 6E — indoor & mesh

The U6+ is the entry point — dual-band WiFi 6 at a budget price, still a very capable AP for most homes. The U6-Pro steps up to 5.3 Gbps and 300+ client capacity for busier sites. The U6-Mesh and U6-Mesh-Pro add wireless mesh backhaul (indoor and outdoor respectively) with a PoE injector included, useful where running a cable isn't practical. The U6-Enterprise and U6-Enterprise-IW (in-wall) bring WiFi 6E's clear 6 GHz band and tri-band 4×4 radios to dense commercial deployments.

WiFi 7 — indoor ceiling

The U7-Lite is the budget WiFi 7 entry point — compact, 2.5GbE, ideal for most homes. The U7-LR adds range for larger or multi-storey homes. The U7-Pro is the mainstream standard pick (also sold as a 5-pack for multi-AP rollouts), and the U7-Pro-Max adds 8 spatial streams and full 6 GHz support for demanding, high-density environments.

WiFi 7 — 10GbE indoor

The U7-Pro-XG (white) / U7-Pro-XG-B (black) and the higher-tier U7-Pro-XGS / U7-Pro-XGS-B bring a genuine 10 Gigabit uplink to the access point — worth it once a single AP is serving enough simultaneous high-bandwidth clients that a 1GbE or 2.5GbE uplink becomes the bottleneck rather than the radio itself.

WiFi 7 — wall-mount

The U7-IW, U7-Pro-Wall and U7-Pro-XG-Wall mount flush to a wall rather than the ceiling — a good fit for hotel rooms, offices with low or obstructed ceilings, or anywhere a ceiling mount isn't practical.

WiFi 7 — outdoor & mesh

The U7-Outdoor covers up to 465 m² and is rated IPX6 for weather resistance. The U7-Pro-Outdoor steps up to full IP67 with an omni antenna kit for wider outdoor coverage. The U7-Mesh adds wireless mesh backhaul for outdoor or hard-to-cable spots.

Legacy WiFi 5 (802.11ac)

The UAP-AC-M, UAP-AC-M-Pro and UAP-AC-Pro are still available for extending an existing WiFi 5 UniFi network or where budget matters more than the latest standard — all ship with a PoE injector included.

High-capacity enterprise

The UAP-XG is built for extreme client density — up to 1,500 simultaneous clients over a 10 Gbps uplink, suited to stadiums, large venues and lecture halls rather than typical office or home use.

UniFi access points — frequently asked questions

WiFi 7 offers higher theoretical speeds and better multi-device performance, and the higher-end models add 2.5GbE or 10GbE uplinks. It's worth it if you're buying new anyway or have WiFi 7-capable devices; if your devices are WiFi 5/6, a WiFi 6 AP like the U6+ or U6-Pro remains excellent value.

It varies by model — the U6-Mesh, U6-Mesh-Pro and the legacy UAP-AC series include a PoE injector, while most WiFi 7 (U7) models don't, since they're typically installed alongside a UniFi PoE switch. Check each product listing before ordering if you don't already have PoE available.

As a rough guide, one AP comfortably covers 100-150 m² indoors depending on building materials and client density. Larger or multi-storey spaces, or areas with lots of interference, benefit from multiple APs rather than one long-range unit trying to cover everything — talk to our team for a tailored coverage design.

Both bring a 10GbE uplink to a WiFi 7 access point, but the XGS is the higher tier with additional radio/streaming capacity over the XG. For most dense-client scenarios needing 10G backhaul, either is a major step up from a 1GbE or 2.5GbE uplink.
