Ubiquiti U7-Outdoor vs U6-Mesh — Which Outdoor UniFi Access Point Do You Need?

The U7-Outdoor is UniFi's all-weather WiFi 7 AP: 465 m² of coverage from a directional internal antenna plus two external omni antennas (with RP-SMA connectors for upgrades), IPX6 weatherproofing, a 2.5 GbE uplink and PoE+ power. The U6-Mesh is the compact WiFi 6 alternative for smaller outdoor areas — 140 m², omnidirectional, GbE uplink.

Frequently Asked Questions — Ubiquiti U7-Outdoor

What is the Ubiquiti U7-Outdoor?

The U7-Outdoor is UniFi's all-weather WiFi 7 access point for outdoor deployments. It covers up to 465 m2 using a directional internal antenna plus two external omni antennas, supports 250+ clients, and connects over a 2.5 GbE uplink with PoE+ power, in an IPX6-rated enclosure operating from -30 to 60 degrees C.

How much area does the U7-Outdoor cover?

Up to 465 m2 (5,000 sq ft) - more than three times the U6-Mesh (140 m2). Its two external antennas use RP-SMA connectors, so they can be swapped for higher-gain or directional antennas to shape coverage.

Is the U7-Outdoor fully weatherproof?

Yes. It is IPX6-rated against driving rain and hose-directed water, operates from -30 to 60 degrees C and 5-95% humidity, and ships with wall and pole mounts (25-60 mm pole diameter).

Does the U7-Outdoor come with a PoE injector?

No - the PoE+ injector is not included. Power it from any PoE+ (802.3at) switch port or add a PoE+ injector. Its maximum draw is 19W over a single Ethernet cable that also carries data.

What is the difference between the U7-Outdoor and U6-Mesh?

The U7-Outdoor is WiFi 7 with 465 m2 coverage, a 2.5 GbE uplink, IPX6 weatherproofing and upgradeable external antennas. The U6-Mesh is WiFi 6 with 140 m2 omnidirectional coverage and a GbE uplink - a good fit for smaller outdoor areas.

Can the U7-Outdoor mesh wirelessly?

Yes. Like other UniFi APs it supports wireless uplinks to nearby UniFi access points, so you can extend coverage where running a cable is impractical - though a wired 2.5 GbE uplink always delivers the best performance.

Does the U7-Outdoor need a controller or subscription?

It is managed by the UniFi Network application - on any UniFi Cloud Gateway (such as the UDR7 or UDM series) or self-hosted console - with no licensing or subscription fees.

Where can I buy the Ubiquiti U7-Outdoor in Australia?

The Ubiquiti U7-Outdoor is available in Australia from ARC IP Networks, an Australian Ubiquiti reseller, with stock on hand. Order online on this page with a GST tax invoice, Australia-wide shipping, or free warehouse pickup from Melbourne. Trade and volume pricing for outdoor WiFi projects is available on request or via 1300 100 440.

How much does the Ubiquiti U7-Outdoor cost in Australia?

Current Australian pricing is shown live on this page in AUD including GST, and is kept competitive against other Australian retailers. Volume pricing for multi-AP outdoor projects is available - request a trade quote for the best rate.

Ubiquiti U7-Outdoor: WiFi 7 access point

The Access Point U7 Outdoor is a UniFi WiFi 7 access point with 4 spatial streams, a rated coverage area of 465 m² (5,000 ft²) and 250+ concurrent clients.

On the wired side the uplink is 2.5 GbE, it is powered by PoE+, and draws at most 19W.

It carries a IPX6 rating, so unlike an ordinary indoor AP it can be mounted outside under normal Australian conditions. Read the rating literally: it covers water, not immersion, and it is not a reason to site the unit where it will sit in standing water.

These are modulation-coding-scheme ceilings measured at the radio, not speeds a client will see. Real throughput depends on the client's own radio, the channel width you can actually use, distance and how much of the band your neighbours are already occupying. Our UniFi access point comparison puts the range side by side.

Power methodPoE+

Power comes down the Ethernet run as PoE+, drawing up to 19W. On a switch that shares one PoE budget across every port, add up the draw of every AP before you commit — the UniFi switch range lists the total availability for each model.

The 2.5 GbE uplink is there for a reason: a WiFi 7 radio can move more than a gigabit, and on a 1 GbE port the switch becomes the bottleneck before the radio does. It will negotiate down to 1 GbE and work, but you lose the headroom you paid for.

Who the U7-Outdoor suits

  • Courtyards, verandas, carparks and yards that need real outdoor-rated WiFi
  • Caravan parks, sports grounds and outdoor hospitality areas
  • Linking an outbuilding or covering a work area away from the main building
  • Sites already running UniFi indoors that need matching coverage outside

The mounting hardware listed above is supplied in the box.

The RP-SMA connectors take external antennas, which is what turns this from a room-coverage AP into a directional link — useful for reaching a shed, a second building or a yard. External antennas are a separate purchase and the internal antenna is used when none are fitted.

Rated for -30 to 60° C (-22 to 140° F). Worth checking against a roof space in an Australian summer, which routinely runs hotter than an occupied room.

Management and requirements

UniFi Network versionVersion 8.2.93 and later
ManagementEthernet

Like every UniFi access point, the U7-Outdoor is adopted and managed by a UniFi controller — a Cloud Gateway or Dream Machine, a Cloud Key, or UniFi hosting. The AP does not run the controller itself, and it is not a standalone router: it provides the WiFi, while routing, firewall and VLANs live on the gateway.

It requires UniFi Network 8.2.93 and later. An older controller will not adopt it until you update.
