How to Choose the Right UniFi Access Point

Choosing UniFi APs comes down to five questions: which WiFi generation you need, whether it's indoors or out, how it mounts, how much uplink speed it needs, and how many you'll deploy. Work through them below.

WiFi 7 or WiFi 6?

If you're buying new, choose WiFi 7 (U7 / E7) for the 6 GHz band, higher capacity and future headroom — the U7-Pro is the ideal default, with the U7-Lite for value and the U7-Pro-Max for maximum density. The WiFi 6 U6 range (U6+, U6-Pro) is still excellent value where ultimate speed isn't essential.

Indoor, outdoor or wall-mounted?

Use ceiling APs like the U7-Pro or U6-Pro for general indoor coverage. For outdoors and exposed areas choose the all-weather U7-Outdoor or IP67 U7-Pro-Outdoor. For hotels, apartments and desks, the in-wall U7-IW and wall-mounted U7-Pro-Wall blend in and add wired ports.

How much uplink speed do you need?

Most APs use a 2.5 GbE uplink, which is plenty for typical sites. For very high-density or high-bandwidth areas — lecture theatres, stadiums, busy offices — choose a 10G model such as the U7-Pro-XG, U7-Pro-XGS or enterprise E7 and pair it with a 10G switch port so the wired side never bottlenecks the wireless.

How many access points, and where?

Plan roughly one AP per 60–90 m² in an office, with more in high-density rooms, and overlap coverage so clients roam smoothly. Thick walls, multiple floors and lots of simultaneous devices all increase the count. For larger sites, mesh models (U7-Mesh, U6-Mesh) fill gaps where cabling is impractical.

Don't forget the gateway and PoE

UniFi APs need a UniFi gateway or Cloud Key to run the UniFi Network controller, and a PoE switch or injector to power them. Check each AP's PoE standard — higher-end WiFi 7 and 10G models can need PoE+ or PoE++ — and make sure your switch has the budget. Our team can spec the gateway, switch and APs as one system.

WiFi 7 (the U7 and E7 range) adds the 6 GHz band, wider channels and higher data rates for much greater throughput and capacity, and most models include a 2.5 GbE or 10 GbE uplink to match. WiFi 6 (the U6 range) is still excellent for everyday coverage and typically uses a Gigabit uplink. If you're buying new and want headroom, choose WiFi 7.
