For most Australian homes and small offices the best QNAP NAS is the QNAP TS-464-8G: four bays, an Intel Celeron N5095 with 8GB (up to 16GB), two 2.5GbE ports, two M.2 NVMe slots, a PCIe slot for 10GbE, HDMI 2.1 and a 3-year warranty. Go smaller with the TS-233 or TS-264-8G at home, bigger with the 6-bay TS-664-8G, choose the AMD Ryzen TS-473A-8G for virtual machines and ZFS, a TVS-H874-I5-32G or TS-H973AX-8G for QuTS hero, and a TS-464U-RP-8G or TS-864EU-RP-8G for a rack.
Quick pick: home backup → TS-233; home office or media → TS-264-8G; small business → TS-464-8G; virtualisation → TS-473A-8G; ZFS for creative teams → TVS-H874-I5-32G; rack → TS-864EU-RP-8G. ARC IP Networks is an authorised QNAP reseller and supplies genuine QNAP from Australian stock with a GST tax invoice.

How to choose a QNAP NAS
Four questions narrow the QNAP range down quickly:
- How many bays? Two bays mirror your data (RAID 1); four bays give RAID 5; six or more allow RAID 6 with two-drive protection. See 2-bay vs 4-bay vs 6-bay NAS and how much storage you need.
- Which processor family? ARM models (TS-133, TS-233, TS-216G, TS-433) are efficient backup and photo boxes with fixed memory. Intel Celeron models (TS-264, TS-462, TS-464, TS-664) add M.2, PCIe, HDMI and upgradable memory. AMD Ryzen V1500B models (TS-473A, TS-673A, TS-873A) add 8 threads, up to 64GB ECC and two PCIe x4 slots. Core i5 and Xeon models (TVS-H674, TVS-H874, TS-H686) are built for QuTS hero.
- How fast is your network? Most current QNAP towers have 2.5GbE; the TS-H973AX-8G has 10GBASE-T built in, and PCIe models take a 10GbE card. See 2.5GbE NAS: is it worth it?.
- QTS or QuTS hero? QTS suits cross-team file sync and HDD-SSD hybrid storage; QuTS hero, QNAP's ZFS-based system, adds higher data protection and data reduction and is optimised for SSD-based applications, according to QNAP.
Best QNAP NAS for home: TS-233, TS-216G and TS-264
The TS-233 is QNAP's basic 2-bay for beginners, homes and workgroups: an ARM Cortex-A55 2.0GHz, 2GB RAM, one Gigabit port and an NPU that speeds up face recognition in QuMagie. It backs up Windows PCs with NetBak Replicator, Macs with Time Machine and phones with the QuMagie or Qfile apps, and draws 10.81 W typical in QNAP's testing. The TS-133 is the single-bay version for one user.
The TS-216G is QNAP's upgraded step with 4GB RAM and a 2.5GbE port (291 MB/s download in QNAP's testing). The TS-264-8G is the pro 2-bay: Intel Celeron N5095, 8GB (up to 16GB), two 2.5GbE ports, two M.2 slots, a PCIe slot for 10GbE, HDMI 2.1, QuTS hero support and a 3-year warranty. Full comparison: QNAP TS-133 vs TS-216G vs TS-233 vs TS-264.
Best QNAP NAS for small business: TS-464 and TS-664
The TS-464-8G is our default recommendation for offices of a few people up to a busy practice. Its two 2.5GbE ports reached 589 MB/s trunked in QNAP's testing, its PCIe slot takes a dual-port 10GbE card (1647 MB/s read in QNAP's testing), and two M.2 slots take NVMe SSD cache. It runs QTS 5 with snapshots, Hybrid Backup Sync and myQNAPcloud, supports QuTS hero, and carries a 3-year warranty.
On a tighter budget, the TS-433-4G gives four bays on the ARM platform with 4GB fixed RAM, one 2.5GbE port and a 2-year warranty, and the TS-462-4G adds M.2, PCIe and HDMI with a dual-core Celeron N4505. Need more bays? The TS-664-8G is the 6-bay version of the TS-464. For MSP projects that need the same model for years, QNAP states the TS-453E-8G will be available and supported for an extended period. Full comparison: QNAP TS-433 vs TS-464 vs TS-473A.
Best AMD Ryzen QNAP NAS: TS-473A, TS-673A and TS-873A
The TS-473A-8G, TS-673A-8G and TS-873A-8G share one platform in 4, 6 and 8 bays: an AMD Ryzen Embedded V1500B 4-core/8-thread 2.2GHz processor, 8GB DDR4 expandable to 64GB with ECC support, two 2.5GbE ports, two M.2 slots and two PCIe Gen 3 x4 slots. Those slots take 10GbE, QM2, SAS/SATA, Fibre Channel or low-profile graphics cards. With two 10GbE ports added, QNAP measured the TS-473A at 2356 MB/s read and 1524 MB/s write.
Choose Ryzen for virtual machines, agentless VM backup with Hyper Data Protector, or QuTS hero with room to grow to 64GB. The trade-off: no built-in graphics or HDMI, so for a home media library the TS-464 is simpler.
Best QuTS hero NAS: TVS-H874, TVS-H674, TS-H973AX and TS-H686
QuTS hero is QNAP's ZFS-based operating system, with end-to-end data integrity, self-healing, snapshots and inline deduplication, compression and compaction. QNAP lists at least 8GB RAM, 16GB for inline deduplication and 32GB recommended. The TS-264, TS-464, TS-664 and the Ryzen towers can switch to it; these models ship ready for it:
- TVS-H874-I5-32G and TVS-H674-I5-32G: 8 or 6 bays, a 12th Gen Intel Core i5-12400 6-core/12-thread (burst up to 4.4GHz), 32GB DDR4 (max 64GB), two M.2 PCIe Gen 4 x4 slots and two PCIe Gen 4 slots for 10GbE or 25GbE. QNAP aims the TVS-h874 at creative and video teams protecting long-term media libraries.
- TS-H973AX-8G: a compact 9-bay with five 3.5-inch and four 2.5-inch bays (two take U.2 NVMe SSDs), a Ryzen V1500B and a built-in 10GBASE-T port beside two 2.5GbE ports. Good for fast editing over 10GbE.
- TS-H686-D1602-8G: four 3.5-inch plus two 2.5-inch bays, an Intel Xeon D-1602, 8GB ECC memory (max 128GB) and four 2.5GbE ports, with real-time SnapSync and WORM support.
Switching between QTS and QuTS hero means backing up and removing all drives first. Our QTS vs QuTS hero guide explains the difference in plain English.
