QNAP NAS FAQ — TS-464-8G

Does the QNAP TS-464-8G come with hard drives?

No. The TS-464-8G is a diskless 4-bay NAS: it ships with the enclosure, the 90 W adapter, an Ethernet cable and drive screws, but no drives. You fit up to four 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or 2.5-inch SATA SSDs in the hot-swappable trays. With four 24 TB drives in RAID 5 the TS-464 supports up to 72 TB of storage.

How fast is the TS-464 network connection, and can it do 10GbE?

The TS-464 has two 2.5GbE ports. With port trunking across both ports QNAP rates it at up to 589 MB/s, which is as fast as a single-port 10GbE NAS. For more, the PCIe Gen 3 x2 slot accepts a QNAP dual-port 10GbE card such as the QXG-10G2T, delivering up to 1,647 MB/s.

What is the difference between the TS-464-8G and the TS-464-4G?

Both use the same Intel Celeron N5095 quad-core NAS and 4-bay chassis; the difference is the pre-installed memory. The TS-464-8G ships with 8 GB DDR4 across its two SODIMM slots, the TS-464-4G with 4 GB. Maximum memory on either model is 16 GB, and the 8 GB fitted to the TS-464-8G is the minimum QNAP requires to run the ZFS-based QuTS hero operating system.

Can I use the M.2 slots in the TS-464 as SSD cache or extra storage?

Yes. The two M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 3 x1 slots take NVMe SSDs and can be configured as a read-only, write-only or read-write cache, with the cache itself in RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 or 10. They can also form a separate storage pool for applications that need fast flash. The M.2 slots are not hot-swappable, and QNAP recommends heatsinks no larger than 68 x 20 x 10 mm.

Is the QNAP TS-464 good for Plex and 4K video?

The TS-464 has an Intel UHD Graphics engine with hardware-accelerated transcoding, which QNAP specifies for converting and streaming video to mobile devices. It also has an HDMI 2.1 output up to 4096 x 2160 at 60 Hz, so it can play media directly to a TV through HD Station. Apps such as Plex Media Server are installed from the QNAP App Center; transcoding performance depends on the app licence and the source video.

What warranty does the QNAP TS-464-8G have in Australia?

QNAP backs the TS-464 with a 3-year standard warranty at no extra cost, and a warranty extension to 5 years can be purchased. Bundled accessories such as the power adapter are covered for one year. ARC IP Networks supplies Australian stock with the full manufacturer warranty.

Professional Overview

The QNAP TS-464-8G is a compact 4-bay tower NAS built for home offices, small businesses and prosumers who have outgrown Gigabit networking. Its four hot-swappable 3.5-inch SATA bays take up to 72 TB of drives, two M.2 2280 NVMe slots add SSD caching, and the two 2.5GbE ports mean file transfers, backups and media streaming are no longer capped at roughly 110 MB/s by a Gigabit link. QNAP positions it for file management, backup, collaboration and video conversion.

At its core is the Intel Celeron N5095, a 4-core, 4-thread processor that bursts to 2.9 GHz, paired with 8 GB of DDR4 in the -8G model and expandable to 16 GB across two SODIMM slots. The two 2.5GbE ports support seven port-trunking modes and reach up to 589 MB/s combined, and the PCIe Gen 3 x2 slot accepts a dual-port 10GbE card for up to 1,647 MB/s, a 5GbE card, or a QM2 card that adds further M.2 SSD slots. Two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports run at 10 Gbps for fast external backups.

Software is where the TS-464 separates itself from basic network drives. It ships with QTS 5.2 and, because it carries 8 GB of memory, also qualifies for the ZFS-based QuTS hero. Either way you get RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10, volume and LUN snapshots down to 5-minute intervals, Hybrid Backup Sync for NAS-to-NAS and cloud jobs, Boxafe for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace backup, iSCSI and Fibre Channel LUNs, and AES 256-bit volume encryption. Virtualization Station, Container Station and QVR Pro with eight free camera channels turn it into a small application and surveillance server.

The chassis measures 165 x 170 x 226.5 mm, is cooled by a single 120 mm smart fan and draws a typical 40.5 W in operation with drives fitted, dropping to 21.6 W in disk standby. An HDMI 2.1 port drives a display at up to 4K60, and a Kensington slot secures the unit. QNAP covers the TS-464 with a 3-year warranty, extendable to 5 years. Australian stock from ARC IP Networks.
