Professional Overview

The Ubiquiti UDM-Beast is the hyperscale flagship of the UniFi Dream Machine line — a single-appliance Cloud Gateway, security platform and NVR purpose-built for large enterprise, campus, MDU and managed-service deployments. In a 1U rack form factor it consolidates routing, switching, IDS/IPS, VPN, NVR, Access, Talk and Identity for environments that need to manage 750+ UniFi devices and over 7,500 simultaneous clients without splitting workloads across multiple controllers.

Performance is the Beast's defining characteristic: 25 Gbps IDS/IPS throughput backed by 55,000+ CyberSecure threat signatures, an octa-core ARM v9 CPU running at 2.1 GHz, and 16 GB of system memory. The port complement is built for high-density edges — (2) 25G SFP28 ports, (2) 10G SFP+, (8) 10 GbE RJ45 (10G/5G/2.5G/1G/100M autosense), (2) 1 GbE RJ45, and a dedicated console — with up to 8 WAN ports configurable for redundancy and SD-WAN.

Built-in UniFi Protect storage and recording is delivered through (2) 3.5" HDD bays and a 128 GB internal SSD, supporting up to (100) HD, (60) 2K or (40) 4K managed cameras alongside 200 Access Hubs without external NVR hardware. A 1.3" touchscreen LCM provides front-panel telemetry, while Shadow Mode (VRRP) gateway failover and USP-RPS DC power backup deliver carrier-grade redundancy. Management is via Ethernet, Bluetooth, the UniFi web controller and the UniFi mobile app (iOS 10.34+, Android 10.37.1+).

The Beast is housed in an aluminium CNC + SGCC steel chassis (442.4 x 43.7 x 325 mm, 5.5 kg) drawing a maximum of 100 W with 342 BTU/hr heat dissipation, certified to CE, FCC and IC, and rated for 0 to 40 °C operating temperature with ESD/EMP air ± 8 kV and contact ± 4 kV protection. Ubiquiti UDM-Beast vs UDM-Pro-Max vs EFG — Which High-End UniFi Gateway Do You Need?

The UDM-Beast is the hyperscale Dream Machine: 25 Gbps IDS/IPS throughput, 750+ managed UniFi devices, 7,500+ clients and dual 25G-class WAN, with built-in UniFi Protect NVR bays. It out-muscles the UDM-Pro-Max (5 Gbps IDS/IPS, 2,000 clients) on every performance metric, while the EFG Enterprise Fortress Gateway differentiates on enterprise resilience — 95,000+ threat signatures with CyberSecure Enterprise and dual hot-swappable power supplies — rather than raw throughput.

Choose the UDM-Beast when you want maximum routing and inspection performance with built-in UniFi Protect recording — hyperscale offices, MSP-managed sites, and high-throughput networks. Choose the EFG when redundant hot-swap power and the enterprise threat-signature tier matter more than peak throughput. Choose the UDM-Pro-Max for standard commercial sites under ~2,000 clients. All run the full UniFi suite with no licensing fees and are available with Australian stock from ARC IP Networks. Compare the complete range on our Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Gateways guide.

Ubiquiti UDM-Beast: hyperscale UniFi in 1U

The UniFi Dream Machine Beast is the largest Dream Machine Ubiquiti makes. It delivers 25 Gbps of IDS/IPS throughput and supports 7,500+ clients and 750+ UniFi devices from a single rack mount (1u) appliance.

The step up is architectural, not incremental. Where the rest of the range uses a quad-core Cortex-A57, the Beast runs an Octa-core ARM® v9 at 2.1 GHz with 16 GB of memory — roughly seven times the inspection throughput of the UDM-Pro-Max and nearly four times its client capacity.

Port density and 25G uplinks

This is where the Beast separates itself from every other Dream Machine — it is the only one with 25 Gigabit uplinks and native 10 GbE copper.

Eight 10 GbE copper ports is unusual at this price point and removes the need for SFP+ modules on most of the LAN side. The two 25G SFP28 ports give you an uplink that will not bottleneck a modern core switch. There is no PoE — at this scale devices are powered from dedicated PoE switches.

All of them share the same 55,000+ with CyberSecure signature set and Shadow Mode (VRRP) Gateway Failover DC Power Backup. See the rack-mount gateway guide and the Dream Machine comparison for the full picture.

Video recording at scale

The Beast records (100) HD (60) 2K (40) 4K streams through UniFi Protect, using (2) 3.5" NVR HDD bays Built-in 128 GB SSD for Faster Experience.

Two bays means RAID protection is available, so a single drive failure does not cost you footage. Both bays ship empty — budget for surveillance-rated 3.5" drives. For camera counts beyond this, or for separating recording from routing, see our Protect NVR comparison and the camera range.

At 100W and 342 BTU/hr it draws noticeably more than the rest of the range, so check the rack's cooling and circuit headroom before installing.

Who the UDM-Beast is for

  • Large single sites — campuses, hotels, hospitals, large warehouses — running toward 7,500+ clients.
  • Multi-gig and 25G cores where a 5 Gbps gateway would be the bottleneck.
  • Large UniFi estates of 750+ devices managed from one console.
  • Substantial camera deployments needing RAID-protected recording on-box.
  • MSPs and integrators consolidating a rack of appliances into 1U.

Deploying at this scale? Our enterprise deal registration covers project pricing. If your site is smaller, the UDM-Pro-Max or UDM-SE will likely fit better — compare in the cloud gateway comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions — Ubiquiti UDM-Beast

What is the Ubiquiti UDM-Beast?

The UDM-Beast (UniFi Dream Machine Beast) is Ubiquiti's hyperscale all-in-one cloud gateway. It delivers 25 Gbps IDS/IPS deep-packet inspection, manages 750+ UniFi devices and 7,500+ clients, and includes dual 3.5-inch NVR drive bays plus a built-in 128 GB SSD for UniFi Protect, in a 1U rack-mount chassis.

How fast is the UDM-Beast firewall?

The UDM-Beast inspects traffic at up to 25 Gbps with IDS/IPS enabled — five times the UDM-Pro-Max (5 Gbps) and double the EFG (12.5 Gbps). It ships with 55,000+ threat signatures via CyberSecure.

What is the difference between the UDM-Beast, UDM-Pro-Max and EFG?

The UDM-Beast leads on raw performance: 25 Gbps IDS/IPS, 750+ managed devices, 7,500+ clients, 25G SFP28 WAN and built-in NVR bays. The EFG offers lower peak throughput (12.5 Gbps) but adds the enterprise threat tier (95,000+ signatures with CyberSecure Enterprise) and dual hot-swappable power supplies. The UDM-Pro-Max (5 Gbps, 2,000 clients) suits standard commercial sites.

What WAN and LAN ports does the UDM-Beast have?

Default WAN is (1) 25G SFP28 plus (1) 10 GbE RJ45, and up to 8 ports can be assigned as WAN for multi-WAN failover and load balancing.

Can the UDM-Beast record security cameras?

Yes. The UDM-Beast includes (2) 3.5-inch hot-swap NVR drive bays and an integrated 128 GB SSD, running UniFi Protect for UniFi cameras with no per-camera licensing fees.

Does the UDM-Beast support high availability and power backup?

The UDM-Beast supports Shadow Mode (VRRP) gateway failover for high availability, and accepts redundant DC power via a USP-RPS unit alongside its internal PSU. For dual hot-swappable AC power supplies, consider the EFG instead.

What processor and memory does the UDM-Beast use?

It runs an octa-core ARM v9 processor at 2.1 GHz with 16 GB of memory and a 128 GB onboard SSD — double the memory of the UDM-Pro-Max.
