A Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Gateway is the heart of a UniFi network. It connects your site to the internet and runs UniFi OS directly on the device — providing routing, a stateful firewall, VPN, and Intrusion Detection & Prevention (IDS/IPS), while self-hosting the UniFi Network application. Higher-end models also run UniFi Protect (video), UniFi Talk (VoIP) and UniFi Access, so one appliance can power your entire connected environment.

How to Choose the Right UniFi Cloud Gateway

Picking a UniFi gateway comes down to four questions: how fast is your internet, how many devices and users you need to support, whether you want PoE or camera recording built in, and whether the unit sits on a desk or in a rack. Use the guide below to narrow the range quickly.

Match the gateway to your internet speed

To keep IDS/IPS security enabled at full line rate, choose a gateway whose IDS/IPS throughput meets or exceeds your plan. For NBN and connections up to 1 Gbps, the UXG-Lite or UCG-Ultra are ideal. For 2–5 Gbps fibre and multi-WAN, step up to the UCG-Max or UXG-Max. For full-fibre 10 Gbps services choose a fibre model — the UCG-Fiber or UXG-Fiber with their 10G SFP+ WAN.

How many devices will it handle?

Compact gateways such as the UXG-Lite and UCG-Ultra suit homes and small offices with dozens of devices. The UCG-Max, UXG-Max and rackmount UDM range comfortably run busy small-to-medium businesses. For hundreds to thousands of concurrent clients across multiple sites, the UDM-Beast, UXG-Enterprise and EFG are built for scale with 25G uplinks and hardware redundancy.

Do you need PoE or UniFi Protect cameras?

If you want to power and record UniFi Protect cameras from one box, choose a gateway with PoE and storage: the UDM-SE (8× PoE+, built-in storage) or the UDM-Pro / UDM-Pro-Max with HDD bays. The wall-mounted UDW bundles a PoE switch and WiFi 6 into a single panel. Compact UCG models can still run Protect when paired with supported storage.

Desktop, wall or rackmount?

Compact UCG/UXG gateways and the Dream Router sit on a desk or shelf. The UDW mounts flush on a wall. The UDM Dream Machines, UXG-Pro, UXG-Enterprise and EFG are 1U rackmount units for comms cabinets and server rooms. Need WiFi built in? The all-in-one Dream Router 7 (UDR7) and UDR-5G-Max (with 5G failover) combine gateway, switch and WiFi in one unit.

UCG (UniFi Cloud Gateway) models are compact, self-contained gateways that host UniFi OS. UXG (Next-Gen Gateway) models focus on routing and multi-WAN, often in rackmount or fibre form factors.
