What is a UniFi Router?

A Ubiquiti UniFi router is the heart of a UniFi network. It connects your site to the internet and runs UniFi OS directly on the device — providing routing, a stateful firewall, VPN and Intrusion Detection & Prevention (IDS/IPS), while self-hosting the UniFi Network application. In UniFi terms the router and the gateway are the same device, and higher-end models also run UniFi Protect (video), UniFi Talk (VoIP) and UniFi Access, so one appliance can power your entire connected environment.

The line-up spans compact UXG and UCG gateways, all-in-one Dream Routers with built-in WiFi, rackmount UDM Dream Machines with switching and camera storage, and enterprise gateways with 25G uplinks and hardware redundancy. Looking specifically at the compact cloud-gateway models? See our UniFi Cloud Gateways guide. ARC IP Networks stocks the full range below — all genuine, all backed by the official Ubiquiti warranty, and all ready to ship Australia-wide.

How to Choose the Right UniFi Router

Choosing a UniFi router comes down to five questions: how fast your internet is, how many devices you run, whether you want WiFi built in, whether you need multi-WAN or VPN, and whether it sits on a desk or in a rack. Work through them below.

Match the router to your internet speed

To keep IDS/IPS security on at full line rate, choose a router whose throughput meets or exceeds your plan. For NBN and connections up to 1 Gbps, the UXG-Lite or UCG-Ultra are ideal. For 2–5 Gbps services choose the UCG-Max or UXG-Max, and for full-fibre 10 Gbps plans pick a fibre model — the UCG-Fiber or UXG-Fiber with 10G SFP+ WAN.

How many devices and how much throughput?

Compact routers like the UXG-Lite and UCG-Ultra suit homes and small offices. The UCG-Max, UXG-Max and rackmount UDM range handle busy small-to-medium businesses, while the UDM-Beast, UXG-Enterprise and EFG scale to hundreds or thousands of clients with 25G uplinks and redundancy.

Do you want WiFi built in?

If you want WiFi in the same box, choose an all-in-one Dream Router 7 (UDR7), UDR-5G-Max (with 5G failover) or wall-mounted Dream Wall. For larger sites, pick a dedicated gateway and add UniFi access points so you can place WiFi exactly where it's needed.

Multi-WAN, failover and VPN

If uptime matters, choose a router with multiple WAN ports for automatic failover — the UXG-Max, UCG-Max and UXG-Pro all support multi-WAN, and the UXG-Pro and UXG-Enterprise add hardware redundancy like dual PSUs. Every UniFi router includes a firewall and site-to-site and remote-access VPN.

Desktop or rackmount — and do you need recording?

Compact UXG/UCG routers and Dream Routers sit on a desk or shelf. The UDM Dream Machines, UXG-Pro, UXG-Enterprise and EFG are 1U rackmount units, and the UDM-Pro, UDM-SE and UDM-Pro-Max add UniFi Protect camera storage so the router doubles as your NVR.

Ubiquiti UniFi Routers — Frequently Asked Questions

A Ubiquiti UniFi router (also called a gateway) connects your network to the internet and runs UniFi OS — handling routing, a stateful firewall, VPN and Intrusion Detection & Prevention (IDS/IPS), while self-hosting the UniFi Network application. Higher-end models also run UniFi Protect, Talk and Access, so one device can route, secure and manage your whole network and is remotely accessible through the UniFi cloud.

For homes and small offices, the UXG-Lite, UCG-Ultra or all-in-one Dream Router 7 are ideal. Growing businesses suit the UCG-Max, UXG-Max or fibre UCG-Fiber. For rackmount deployments with camera storage, choose a UDM-Pro, UDM-SE or UDM-Pro-Max. Large enterprise and high-availability sites should look at the UXG-Pro, UXG-Enterprise, UDM-Beast or EFG. Not sure? Call our Melbourne team on 1300 100 440.

They're the same class of device described different ways. In UniFi, the router is the gateway: UCG (Cloud Gateway) and UXG (Next-Gen Gateway) models are dedicated routers, Dream Machines (UDM) are rackmount routers with built-in switching and storage, and Dream Routers (UDR) add WiFi. For a deeper look at the compact cloud-gateway models, see our Cloud Gateways guide.

Some do. The all-in-one Dream Router (UDR7, UDR-5G-Max) and Dream Wall (UDW) have WiFi built in. Dedicated gateways like the UXG and UCG range, and the rackmount UDM Dream Machines, do not — you add UniFi access points for wireless, which is the usual approach for larger sites that need multiple APs.

Yes. Most UniFi routers support multiple WAN connections with automatic failover and load balancing, and all run a built-in firewall with site-to-site and remote-access VPN (including UniFi's Teleport/WiFiman VPN). Higher-end models like the UXG-Pro and UXG-Enterprise add hardware redundancy such as dual power supplies and VRRP.

No — modern UniFi routers host the UniFi Network application themselves, so no separate Cloud Key is required. They self-host the controller and connect to the UniFi cloud for remote management.

Yes. ARC IP Networks is an authorised Ubiquiti reseller and every UniFi router is genuine, sourced through authorised Australian distribution and covered by the official Ubiquiti manufacturer warranty.
