Compact gateways — entry & multi-WAN

The UXG-Lite is the cheapest way into a full UniFi gateway — a single GbE WAN/LAN pair doing line-rate IDS/IPS threat inspection, ideal for a home or small office that just needs a solid router with proper network security. The UXG-Max steps up to 2.5GbE and true multi-WAN (failover or load-balance two internet connections). The UCG-Ultra and UCG-Max are Ubiquiti's Cloud Gateway line — compact, fanless boxes built to run the UniFi Network application locally, with the Max adding a built-in NVR for camera recording.

Fiber gateways

The UCG-Fiber and UXG-Fiber both include a built-in GPON/fiber WAN interface, so if your ISP delivers a raw fiber drop rather than an RJ45 or DSL handoff, these skip the need for a separate ONT/media converter.

Dream Router — all-in-one WiFi router

The UDR7 is Ubiquiti's flagship all-in-one for people who want a single box with built-in WiFi 7, a 10G SFP+ WAN port, and a built-in NVR for UniFi Protect cameras — no separate access point or switch required to get started. The UDR7-1TBSD bundle adds a 1TB microSD card pre-installed for camera storage. The UDR-5G-Max instead prioritises WAN flexibility, with 5G cellular as a primary or backup internet connection — useful for sites without reliable fixed-line internet, or as an emergency failover for a business that can't afford downtime.

Dream Machine — rackmount all-in-one

The Dream Machine family is the rackmount equivalent of the Dream Router — gateway, IDS/IPS security, VPN and a built-in UniFi Protect NVR in a 1U box. The UDM-SE is the only one with a built-in 8-port PoE switch (180W), making it the most self-contained option. The UDM-Pro shares the same 3.5 Gbps security engine without PoE, for sites that already have PoE switching. The UDM-Pro-Max steps up to 5 Gbps IDS/IPS, dual HDD bays and 2,000+ clients for larger sites, and the UDM-Beast is the hyperscale flagship — dual 25G SFP28 WAN and 25 Gbps of inspected throughput for very large or high-bandwidth deployments.

Professional & industrial gateways

The UXG-Pro is a 1U rackmount gateway for sites that want serious multi-gig routing without the built-in NVR/switch of a Dream Machine. The UCG-Industrial is purpose-built for harsh environments — a hardened, DIN-rail-mountable enclosure for factories, warehouses and outdoor cabinets where a standard desktop gateway wouldn't survive.

Enterprise gateways

The UXG-Enterprise and EFG (Enterprise Fortress Gateway) sit at the top of the range — 25G WAN interfaces, hot-swappable dual power supplies, and IDS/IPS throughput measured in double-digit gigabits for sites where the gateway genuinely needs to keep up with a fast internet connection and heavy inspected traffic without becoming the bottleneck.

Home surveillance bundles

The UDR7-G6-INS-2 and UDR7-G6-INS-4 package a UDR7 with 2 or 4 UniFi G6 Instant cameras respectively — a fast way to get a complete WiFi 7 router plus a working camera system out of the box, at a lower combined price than buying each piece separately.

How to choose the right UniFi gateway

  • Home, first UniFi gateway: UXG-Lite for a simple upgrade, or UDR7 if you want built-in WiFi 7 too.
  • Small business, first gateway: UDM-SE — the default recommendation, built-in PoE switch included.
  • Already have a PoE switch: UDM-Pro — same security engine, no PoE, lower cost.
  • No reliable fixed-line internet: UDR-5G-Max for 5G as primary or backup WAN.
  • Fiber/GPON WAN handoff: UCG-Fiber or UXG-Fiber.
  • Larger site, need more throughput and storage: UDM-Pro-Max.
  • Factory, warehouse or outdoor cabinet: UCG-Industrial.
  • Enterprise-scale, high-speed WAN: UXG-Enterprise or EFG.
  • Want a router and a starter camera system together: UDR7-G6-INS-2 or UDR7-G6-INS-4.

UniFi routers & gateways — frequently asked questions

The Dream Router (UDR7, UDR-5G-Max) is an all-in-one box with built-in WiFi, designed to sit on a desk or shelf. The Dream Machine (UDM-Pro, UDM-SE, UDM-Pro-Max, UDM-Beast) is a 1U rackmount gateway with no built-in WiFi — you add separate UniFi access points. Dream Machines generally offer higher IDS/IPS throughput and client capacity.

Only the UDM-SE has a built-in PoE switch (8 ports, 180W). Every other Dream Machine, Dream Router and Cloud/Next-Gen Gateway needs a separate PoE switch (or PoE injectors) to power access points and cameras.

Only if you have a genuinely fast internet connection (multiple gigabits) and heavy traffic that needs full IDS/IPS inspection without becoming a bottleneck, or you need hot-swappable redundant power for uptime-critical sites. Most homes and small-to-medium businesses are well served by a UDM-SE or UDM-Pro-Max.

Yes — the UDR-5G-Max is built to run 5G as either your primary WAN or as automatic failover if your fixed-line connection drops, which suits sites without reliable NBN/fibre or as business continuity insurance.
