Router vs gateway vs Dream Machine — what's the difference?

In UniFi, the router is the gateway. The dedicated UXG and UCG models are pure routers/gateways; the Dream Machines (UDM) are rackmount routers that add a built-in switch and UniFi Protect storage; and the Dream Routers (UDR) add WiFi. Only the UDR7 in this comparison has WiFi built in — the others are paired with separate UniFi access points for wireless.

How to choose the right UniFi router

  • Match your internet speed: up to 1 Gbps, the UXG-Lite or UCG-Ultra; 2–5 Gbps, the UCG-Max; full-fibre 10 Gbps, the UCG-Fiber.
  • Want WiFi in the box? Choose the all-in-one UDR7; otherwise add access points.
  • Need camera recording? The UDM-Pro and UDM-SE run UniFi Protect with a hard drive — the UDM-SE also powers cameras over PoE.
  • Multi-WAN, VPN and redundancy: step up to the UCG-Max or enterprise UXG-Enterprise.

Build the whole system

A UniFi router pairs with UniFi switches to expand and power your network, access points for WiFi, and UniFi Protect cameras for security. We can spec the whole project for you.

UniFi routers — frequently asked questions

For most businesses the UniFi UDM-Pro is the best all-round Ubiquiti router in 2026 — a 1U gateway with a built-in switch, 10G SFP+, 3.5 Gbps IDS/IPS and a drive bay for UniFi Protect. For a home or small office the UXG-Lite is the best value, and the all-in-one Dream Router 7 (UDR7) is the best pick if you want WiFi built in.

They're the same class of device. In UniFi the router is the gateway: UCG (Cloud Gateway) and UXG (Next-Gen Gateway) are dedicated routers, the Dream Machines (UDM) are rackmount routers with a built-in switch and camera storage, and the Dream Routers (UDR) add WiFi. For the compact cloud-gateway models specifically, see our UniFi Cloud Gateways guide.

Some do. The Dream Router (UDR7) and Dream Wall have WiFi built in. Dedicated gateways like the UXG and UCG range, and the rackmount UDM Dream Machines, do not — you add UniFi access points for wireless, which is the usual approach for larger sites that need several APs.

Yes. Most UniFi routers support multiple WAN connections with automatic failover and load balancing, and all include a firewall with site-to-site and remote-access VPN. Higher-end models like the UXG-Pro and UXG-Enterprise add hardware redundancy such as dual power supplies and VRRP.

No — modern UniFi routers host the UniFi Network application themselves, so no separate Cloud Key is required. They self-host the controller and connect to the UniFi cloud for remote management. The UCG-Ultra and UDM range can also run UniFi Protect, Talk and Access.
