What is a UniFi Switch?

A Ubiquiti UniFi switch is a fully managed network switch that wires together everything on your network — access points, IP cameras, computers, servers, VoIP phones and more — and is configured from a single dashboard in the UniFi Network application. Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) models deliver both data and power down one cable, so UniFi access points and cameras run without separate power adapters, keeping installs tidy and reliable.

How to Choose the Right UniFi Switch

Choosing a UniFi switch comes down to five questions: how many ports you need, whether those ports must supply PoE, how fast each port should be, what speed the uplinks to your core need to run, and whether you need Layer 3 routing. Work through them below.

How many ports — and how many with PoE?

Count your wired devices and add room to grow. For a handful of devices, a USW-Flex-Mini or USW-Lite-8-PoE is plenty; offices typically land on a 24-port USW-24-PoE or USW-Pro-24-PoE; larger sites use 48-port models. Then count only the devices that need power over Ethernet (APs, cameras, phones) — that is your minimum PoE port count.

Check the PoE budget, not just the port count

Each switch has a total PoE wattage budget shared across its ports. UniFi APs draw roughly 5–15W, while PoE cameras and PTZs can draw 15–60W using PoE+ or PoE++ (802.3bt). Add up your devices and pick a switch whose budget comfortably exceeds the total — for example the USW-Pro-24-PoE (400W) for a camera-heavy office, or the Enterprise Campus ECS range (1050–2150W) for large PoE deployments.

Match port speed to your devices

Gigabit is fine for most desktops and older APs. For WiFi 7 access points and modern workstations, choose 2.5GbE USW-Pro Max switches so the uplink never bottlenecks the AP. For servers, NAS and high-end edge devices, the 10GbE USW-Pro-XG and USW-Flex-XG switches deliver full multi-gig copper.

Plan your uplinks and aggregation

Uplinks carry all the traffic from a switch back to your core, so they should be faster than the access ports. SFP+ (10G) and SFP28 (25G) fibre uplinks prevent congestion as you add switches. For the network backbone, an USW-Aggregation, USW-Pro-Aggregation or ECS-Aggregation switch ties multiple switches and servers together at 10G–100G.

Do you need Layer 3 routing?

If you want the switch to route between VLANs and subnets at hardware speed — common in larger or segmented networks — choose a Layer 3 model such as the USW-Pro, USW-Pro Max, USW-Pro-XG or Enterprise Campus switches. Smaller flat networks are well served by Layer 2 USW-Lite and USW-Flex switches with routing handled by the gateway.
