What is an NVR?

One recorder for your whole camera system

A Network Video Recorder (NVR) is the brain of an IP camera system. PoE models power and connect each camera over a single network cable — no separate power supplies or switch needed — then record continuously to internal hard drives. Hikvision NVRs add AcuSense (human/vehicle filtering and smart search) and, on DeepinMind models, advanced deep-learning analytics. View live and recorded footage from anywhere via the Hik-Connect app, and scale from a single 8-channel unit to 256-channel, RAID-protected enterprise recorders.

How to choose a Hikvision NVR

Channels: pick an NVR with at least as many channels as cameras, with room to grow — 8-ch for homes/small shops, 16–32-ch for businesses, 64-ch+ for large or multi-site systems.

PoE ports: a PoE NVR (e.g. /8P, /16P) powers cameras directly; for more cameras than ports, add a PoE switch.

Storage: more channels and higher resolution need more hard-drive bays and capacity; some models ship with HDDs pre-installed (4 TB / 6 TB), enterprise units add RAID.

AI: choose AcuSense for human/vehicle smart search, or DeepinMind for advanced analytics on large systems.

Compatibility: all Hikvision NVRs work with Hikvision ColorVu and AcuSense cameras out of the box.

FAQ

Hikvision NVRs — questions

What is a Hikvision NVR?
A Network Video Recorder is the central unit that powers (on PoE models), records and manages your IP cameras. It stores footage on internal hard drives and lets you view live and recorded video locally or remotely via the Hik-Connect app.
How many channels do I need?
Choose an NVR with at least as many channels as cameras, leaving room to expand. As a guide: 8-channel for homes and small shops, 16–32-channel for businesses, and 64-channel or more for large or multi-site systems.
What’s the difference between a PoE NVR and a non-PoE NVR?
A PoE NVR has built-in ports that power and connect cameras over a single cable — ideal for most installs. A non-PoE NVR records cameras over your existing network, suited to larger sites that already use separate PoE switches.
What is AcuSense / DeepinMind on an NVR?
AcuSense applies human and vehicle filtering and smart search across every channel to cut false alarms. DeepinMind models add advanced deep-learning analytics and higher decoding for enterprise systems.
Do these NVRs work with ColorVu and AcuSense cameras?
Yes. All Hikvision NVRs are fully compatible with Hikvision ColorVu and AcuSense cameras, including their colour night vision and AI detection features.
Do they come with hard drives?
Some models ship with HDDs pre-installed (for example 4 TB or 6 TB variants); others are supplied without drives so you can choose capacity. We can pre-configure storage to suit your retention needs.
Are these genuine Australian stock?
Yes. ARC IP Networks is an authorised Australian Hikvision reseller; all NVRs are genuine local stock with a 3-year Australian manufacturer warranty.
