Hikvision Default Password: How to Activate & Reset It

Hikvision has no default password — devices are activated with your own. Forgot it? Here's

Hikvision cameras and NVRs do not have a default password. For security, every current Hikvision device ships "inactive" and you set your own strong password the first time you use it — so there is no universal default to find. If you have forgotten the password you set, here is how to reset it safely. (Need a genuine device? ARC IP Networks is an authorised Hikvision reseller in Australia.)

Why there is no default password

Since 2015, Hikvision devices require activation — you create a strong admin password before the camera or recorder will work. This protects you from the old risk of devices sitting on factory defaults. It also means the answer to "what is the Hikvision default password?" is simply: the one you set when you activated it.

How to set the password on a new Hikvision device

When you first connect a new device you will be prompted to activate it and create a password. You can do this with the free SADP tool, through the device’s web browser, or directly on an NVR’s on-screen menu. Tip: during activation, also set a reserved email and security questions — they make any future reset much easier.

How to reset a forgotten Hikvision password

Because there is no default to fall back on, a reset verifies that you own the device. The common methods are:

  • SADP "Forgot Password". Open the SADP tool, select your device, choose Forgot Password, and export the encrypted request file or QR code. Send it to Hikvision support or your authorised reseller, who returns a reset code you enter to set a new password.
  • Security questions or reserved email. If you set these during activation, you can reset directly on the device’s local menu or login screen.
  • GUID file. If you exported a GUID key when activating, you can use it to reset.
  • Physical reset button. Many cameras have a small reset button — holding it while powering the device on restores it to the inactive state, ready to re-activate with a new password.

Avoid lockouts in future

Record your password securely, and always set a reserved email plus security questions at activation. That way a reset is a two-minute job rather than a support ticket.

Frequently asked questions

What is the default password for a Hikvision camera?

Modern Hikvision cameras and recorders have no default password. They ship "inactive" and you create your own strong password when you first activate the device, so there is no universal default to look up.

How do I reset a forgotten Hikvision password?

Because there is no default, you reset by verifying ownership. The main options are: the SADP tool’s "Forgot Password" feature, security questions or a reserved email set during activation, a GUID file, or the physical reset button on some cameras. Your authorised reseller can help generate a reset code.

Does resetting the password delete my recordings?

Resetting the admin password does not erase footage stored on the hard drive. A full factory reset, however, can clear device settings, so note your configuration first.

What was the old Hikvision default password?

Older legacy devices once used a simple default, but this was discontinued years ago for security. All current Hikvision devices require you to set your own password on activation.

Can ARC IP Networks help reset my Hikvision device?

Yes. As an authorised Hikvision reseller in Australia, we can guide you through the reset process and provide support for genuine Hikvision devices.
