Switches that fix a frozen camera without a site visit

Every camera install eventually has the same two problems: a camera locks up and needs a power cycle, and nobody can remember which port it is on. The Reyee ES range solves both in the switch. IP camera recognition lists attached cameras by device, and PoE watchdog pings each powered device and cuts and restores power to that port automatically when it stops answering — which is exactly what a frozen camera needs, and what would otherwise cost a truck roll.

Perpetual PoE keeps the cameras powered through a switch reboot or firmware upgrade, so a maintenance window does not leave every channel blank in the recording. All of it is managed free from Ruijie Cloud.

How to choose a Ruijie PoE switch

Budget before port count

A 370 W switch runs 24 fixed cameras at about 15 W each. Add PTZ cameras with heaters and washers, or Wi-Fi 6E/7 access points, and you need 802.3bt PoE++ — the RG-ES207GS-HP for small jobs, or step up to the NBS managed range at 740 W.

Leave two ports spare

The NVR and a laptop for commissioning both need a port, and they should not be on PoE. The 10-port ES211GS-P gives you 8 powered plus 2 clear ports for exactly this reason.

SFP is not optional on bigger sites

Camera clusters are usually at the far end of a fibre run. A switch with an SFP port terminates it directly instead of needing a media converter in a box on the wall.

Outdoor means IP65 and surge protection

The -OD models are dust-tight, rated −30 °C to +65 °C, and carry ±8 kV surge protection on every PoE port — the specification that actually matters on outdoor copper in Australia, where induced surge from nearby strikes kills more ports than water does.

Ruijie PoE switches — questions

What is PoE watchdog?
PoE watchdog makes the switch ping each powered device. If a device stops responding, the switch automatically removes and restores power on that port, rebooting it. Most frozen IP cameras come back with a power cycle, so this resolves the single most common cause of a camera site visit.
What does IP camera recognition do?
The switch identifies IP cameras plugged into it and shows them by device in Ruijie Cloud rather than as bare port numbers. It works with third-party ONVIF cameras, not just one brand, which makes fault-finding on a mixed camera network far quicker.
How many cameras can a 370 W PoE switch run?
About 24 fixed-lens bullet or turret cameras, which typically draw 10–15 W each. Fewer if you are running PTZ cameras with heaters, IR illuminators or multi-sensor units — those can each take 30 W or more, so count actual draw rather than port count.
Do I need PoE+ or PoE++?
PoE+ (802.3at, 30 W per port) covers almost all fixed cameras and Wi-Fi 5/6 access points. PoE++ (802.3bt, up to 60–90 W) is needed for PTZ cameras with heaters, Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 access points, and PoE-powered displays or door controllers.
Can I mount a Ruijie switch outdoors?
Yes — the RG-ES207GS-AC-OD and RG-ES207GS-PI-OD are IP65 rated for −30 °C to +65 °C with ±8 kV PoE surge protection. The PI-OD version is powered by a single PoE feed from the building, so no mains is needed at the pole.
