ASUSTOR AS5402T vs AS5404T: Which AS54 NAS Should You Buy? (Australia)

Two bays or four? The AS5402T and AS5404T compared from ASUSTOR's official specs, with drive bundles and alternatives.

The ASUSTOR AS5402T and AS5404T are the same NAS inside: an Intel Celeron N5105, 4 GB of DDR4 (up to 16 GB), four M.2 NVMe SSD slots, dual 2.5GbE, three USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports and HDMI 2.0b. The difference is drive bays: the AS5402T has two (up to 36 TB raw with 18 TB drives) and the AS5404T has four (up to 72 TB raw), with a larger 120 mm fan and a slightly bigger body.

Quick pick: one or two users, mirrored backups and a compact box → AS5402T; Plex libraries, RAID 5 and room to grow → AS5404T. Both come diskless or bundled with a Seagate drive. ARC IP Networks is a trusted ASUSTOR supplier in Australia, with genuine stock, the full 3-year ASUSTOR warranty and Australia-wide delivery.

AS5402T vs AS5404T at a glance

ARC IP Networks lists these models as the Nimbustor 2 Gen2 and Nimbustor 4 Gen2; ASUSTOR's current product pages call them simply the AS5402T and AS5404T, part of the AS54 series.

Two bays or four: the real decision

With two bays, the AS5402T is usually set up as RAID 1: both drives hold the same data, so you get the capacity of one drive and protection if the other fails. With four bays, the AS5404T can run RAID 5, which keeps the capacity of three drives and still survives one failure, or RAID 6 or RAID 10 for extra protection. That makes the four-bay model better value per usable terabyte once your library grows.

Both models accept 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch SATA hard drives and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, with hot-swappable, tool-free bays. If you outgrow either one, ASUSTOR's AS5004U and AS6004U expansion units connect over USB and take the totals to 14 drives (AS5402T) or 16 drives (AS5404T).

Four M.2 NVMe slots on both

This is what sets the AS54 series apart from entry-level NAS units. Both models have four tool-free M.2 2280 NVMe slots on PCIe 3.0 x1, with cooling vents to keep the SSDs at full speed. ASUSTOR positions them for workloads that need high random I/O, such as content creation: use them as a fast SSD volume for active projects, apps and Docker containers, or to accelerate your hard-drive volume. Hard drives for capacity plus SSDs for speed is the hybrid approach we explain in our SSD and NVMe NAS guide.

Dual 2.5GbE with SMB Multichannel

Each model has two 2.5GbE ports. A single 2.5GbE link carries up to 312 MB/s, about two and a half times Gigabit Ethernet. Combine both ports with SMB Multichannel on a Windows PC and ASUSTOR's lab measured 576 MB/s read and 566 MB/s write, the same on both models. The ports still work with a standard Gigabit switch, so you can start on your existing NBN router or switch and upgrade to a 2.5G switch later.

HDMI 2.0b, 4K playback and USB 3.2 Gen 2

Both units have an HDMI 2.0b output with 10-bit 4K hardware decoding, HEVC decoding and VP9 10-bit Profile 2 decoding, so the NAS can play 4K HDR video straight to a TV. An infrared receiver works with ASUSTOR's optional AS-RC13 remote. Plex Media Server installs from App Central, and the Celeron N5105 offers 4K transcoding.

Three USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports at 10 Gbps are twice the speed of the previous generation's USB, which helps when you back up to an external drive or copy footage off a card reader.

Size, noise and power

The AS5402T is 114 mm wide and weighs 1.71 kg; the AS5404T is 174 mm wide and 2.26 kg. Both are 170 mm high and 230 mm deep. ASUSTOR rates them at 18.6 dB and 19.7 dB respectively with the hard drives idle, and the AS5404T's larger 120 mm fan moves more air for the extra drives. In operation the AS5402T draws 22.9 W and the AS5404T 38.3 W, and both drop below 1 W in sleep mode. Power scheduling, Wake on LAN and Wake on WAN in ADM help cut running costs further.
