Security Cameras Without a Subscription: How Local Recording Works

How cameras record to your own NVR or microSD card with no monthly fees, why wired systems keep recording without Wi-Fi or internet, and which no-subscription setup suits an Australian home or business.

Yes, you can have security cameras with no monthly subscription. Choose cameras that record to storage you own: a hard drive inside an NVR (network video recorder) at your property, or a microSD card inside the camera. The phone app for live view, playback and alerts is free. Wired PoE systems also keep recording when your internet or Wi-Fi drops, because the cameras are cabled straight to the recorder.

Quick pick: a house you can cable: a wired PoE kit such as the JVS-KIT-5M-4C. Renting or no cabling: the Wi-Fi pack (records to microSD). No power and no internet: the JVS-N47-AOR solar 4G camera. See every option on our no-subscription security cameras page. ARC IP Networks stocks Jovision in Australia, with genuine stock and the full manufacturer's warranty.

Why do some security cameras need a subscription?

Many consumer cameras have no recorder of their own. They upload clips to the maker's cloud, and the monthly plan pays for that storage plus features such as longer history or person alerts. Stop paying and you usually lose recordings and some features.

A system that records locally works the other way round. The footage is written to a drive or card at your property, the detection runs on the camera or recorder, and the app simply connects to your own equipment. You pay once for the hardware and add a hard drive sized for how many days you want to keep.

Do security cameras work without Wi-Fi or internet?

Wired cameras do. A PoE (Power over Ethernet) camera gets power and data through one network cable from the NVR, so it never touches your Wi-Fi. The NVR records whether the internet is up or down. You only need internet at the property to watch remotely on your phone; when it drops, recording carries on and remote viewing comes back when the connection does. Our guide Does CCTV work without internet or Wi-Fi? goes into more detail.

Where there is no internet at all, a 4G camera uses a mobile SIM instead. The JVS-N47-AOR also brings its own solar panel and battery, so it needs no power either. Jovision 4G cameras use LTE bands 1, 3, 5 and 8 (not band 28), so check your carrier's coverage at the site first. Our solar and 4G camera guide covers these.

What you give up without a cloud plan, and how to cover it

The honest trade-off: if footage only lives at your property, a thief who takes the recorder takes the footage. That is easy to manage:

  • Hide the NVR. Put it in a cupboard or comms cabinet, not on show next to the TV.
  • Turn on phone alerts. Motion and smart detection alerts reach your phone as things happen, so you are not relying on footage after the fact.
  • Export important clips straight away. Save anything you need for police or insurance to your phone or a USB stick.
  • Size the drive properly. H.265+ compression stores more days on the same drive; ask us to match a surveillance drive to your camera count.

You also get privacy in return: recordings of your home stay on equipment you own.

Common questions

Straight answers from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.

Yes. Choose cameras that record locally, to a hard drive in an NVR or to a microSD card in the camera. Jovision systems record locally and the CloudSEE app for live view and playback is free, so there are no monthly fees.

Yes. Wired PoE cameras connect to the NVR by network cable and record without Wi-Fi. 4G cameras such as the Jovision JVS-N47-AOR use a mobile SIM instead of Wi-Fi.

A wired NVR system will: it records on site. You lose remote viewing on your phone until the internet comes back, then you can play back what was recorded.

Yes. Live view, playback and alerts in the app are free. The property needs an internet connection (or a 4G SIM in a 4G camera) for remote viewing.

Cameras, an NVR, a surveillance hard drive and a network cable to each camera. A PoE NVR powers the cameras through those cables. Our kits include the cameras and NVR; the hard drive is added separately.

Keep the NVR out of sight in a cupboard or cabinet, turn on phone alerts so you see events as they happen, and export important clips straight away. That covers most of what a cloud plan offers.

For a home or business with power, a wired PoE system. For a farm, building site or gate with no power or internet, a 4G solar camera such as the Jovision JVS-N47-AOR, which records to microSD.

There is no camera subscription, but the SIM needs a mobile data plan from the carrier you choose. Jovision 4G cameras use LTE bands 1, 3, 5 and 8, not band 28.
