Gen2 vs Gen2+ vs Gen3: what the labels mean

ASUSTOR numbers generations within each series, so a Gen2 Drivestor and a Gen2 Flashstor are different platforms. Here is what changed, based on ASUSTOR's own overview pages.

Drivestor Gen2 and Drivestor Pro Gen2

Both run a 1.7 GHz quad-core Realtek RTD1619B, up from 1.4 GHz in the first-generation Drivestor and Drivestor Pro, with an upgraded integrated graphics engine for 4K transcoding. ASUSTOR says the Drivestor Pro Gen2 was its first ARM NAS to support Btrfs, which brings snapshots in Snapshot Center. The Pro models also add hot-swappable, tool-free drive trays and twice the memory (2 GB instead of 1 GB).

Lockerstor Gen2+ (the "v2" models)

Gen2+ keeps the 10 nm Intel Celeron N5105 of the Lockerstor Gen2 but moves to dual 5GbE, which ASUSTOR describes as effectively doubling the available bandwidth. Its PCIe slot is no longer proprietary and accepts standard 10GbE cards (4 and 6-bay models only; ASUSTOR notes the 2-bay does not support 10GbE). Each Gen2+ model also has two USB 10 Gbps ports plus a USB 2.0 port for a UPS or printer.

Lockerstor Gen3

Gen3 switches to AMD's 6 nm Ryzen Embedded V3C14 (2.3 GHz, up to 3.8 GHz), 16 GB of DDR5-4800 ECC memory (up to 64 GB), M.2 slots on PCIe 4.0, two USB4 ports and dual 10GbE alongside dual 5GbE. ASUSTOR calls the Lockerstor Gen3 series its fastest NAS ever. One limit to know: the USB4 ports are for storage devices; ASUSTOR states they do not connect directly to a computer for host-to-host networking.

Flashstor 12 Pro and Flashstor 6 Gen2

The Flashstor 12 Pro (FS6712X) pairs the Celeron N5105 with twelve M.2 slots, 10GbE, HDMI 2.0b and an S/PDIF audio output. The Flashstor 6 Gen2 (FS6806X) moves to the same AMD Ryzen Embedded V3C14 as the Lockerstor Gen3, with six PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots (the fastest at x4), DDR5 memory with ECC support, USB4 and redesigned, quieter cooling.

ASUSTOR Drivestor: the home series

The Drivestor 2 Gen2 (AS1202T) and Drivestor 4 Gen2 (AS1204T) are built for families: phone and PC backups, the family photo library, and 4K streaming to the TV. A single 2.5GbE port works on any Gigabit network today and moves files faster once you add a 2.5GbE switch. Memory is fixed at 1 GB, so they suit a handful of apps rather than dozens of containers.

The Drivestor 2 Pro Gen2 (AS3302T v2) and Drivestor 4 Pro Gen2 (AS3304T v2) keep the same processor but double the memory to 2 GB, accept 2.5-inch drives as well as 3.5-inch, and add Btrfs snapshots and hot-swap trays. ASUSTOR's lab figures are 283 MB/s read and 280 MB/s write for both Pro models.

ASUSTOR AS54: from home to power user

The AS5402T and AS5404T (named Nimbustor 2 Gen2 and Nimbustor 4 Gen2 by ASUSTOR) are the step up for gamers, Plex households and home creators. They combine hard-drive bays with four M.2 NVMe slots, a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron N5105 (bursting to 2.9 GHz), 4 GB of DDR4 expandable to 16 GB, dual 2.5GbE for SMB Multichannel, USB 10 Gbps ports and an HDMI 2.0b output. ASUSTOR quotes 576 MB/s read and 566 MB/s write over SMB Multichannel.

ASUSTOR Lockerstor: power users and business

The Lockerstor Gen2+ range (Lockerstor 2 Gen2+, Lockerstor 4 Gen2+ and Lockerstor 6 Gen2+) suits small offices, trades businesses and creative studios. Dual 5GbE with SMB Multichannel gave ASUSTOR 1,146 MB/s read on the 4-bay (RAID 5), four M.2 slots add SSD cache or storage, and the 4 and 6-bay models take a 10GbE card such as the AS-T10G3. The 6-bay ships with 8 GB of memory; the 2 and 4-bay with 4 GB.

Lockerstor 4 Gen3 (AS6804T): when Gen2+ is not enough

The Lockerstor 4 Gen3 (AS6804T) is the choice for video teams, virtual machines and databases. ECC memory detects and corrects common memory errors, two 10GbE ports gave ASUSTOR 1,675 MB/s read and 791 MB/s write over SMB Multichannel (RAID 5), and two USB4 ports at 40 Gbps take USB4 and Thunderbolt 3/4 storage for fast ingest. It drops the HDMI output of the Gen2+ models.

ASUSTOR Flashstor: all-flash NAS

Flashstor units hold M.2 NVMe SSDs only, so there are no spinning drives to hear. The Flashstor 12 Pro (FS6712X) offers the most slots (twelve) plus HDMI and S/PDIF, while the Flashstor 6 Gen2 (FS6806X) has fewer but faster PCIe 4.0 slots, a Ryzen processor and USB4. ASUSTOR quotes about 1,180 MB/s reads over 10GbE for both. Need bulk capacity too? ASUSTOR notes Flashstor can add hard drives through an AS5004U expansion unit on USB.

Common questions

Straight answers from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.

Drivestor is ASUSTOR's home series with an ARM processor and 2.5GbE. Lockerstor is the power-user and business series with Intel or AMD processors, M.2 SSD slots and 5GbE or 10GbE. Flashstor is the all-flash series that holds only M.2 NVMe SSDs.

Yes, for backups, photo libraries and 4K streaming. The Drivestor Gen2 has a 1.7 GHz quad-core Realtek processor, 2.5GbE and 1 GB of fixed memory; the Drivestor Pro Gen2 doubles memory to 2 GB and adds Btrfs snapshots.

Lockerstor Gen2+ uses an Intel Celeron N5105, DDR4 memory, dual 5GbE and PCIe 3.0 M.2 slots. Lockerstor Gen3 uses an AMD Ryzen Embedded V3C14, 16 GB of ECC DDR5, dual 10GbE plus dual 5GbE, PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots and two USB4 ports.

Gen2+ is the refreshed Lockerstor Gen2, sold as the v2 models (AS6702T v2, AS6704T v2, AS6706T v2). ASUSTOR upgraded it to dual 5GbE and made the PCIe slot accept standard 10GbE cards on the 4 and 6-bay models.

The AS5402T and AS5404T are ASUSTOR's Home to Power User models, named Nimbustor Gen2 by ASUSTOR. They sit between Drivestor and Lockerstor, with a Celeron N5105, four M.2 slots, dual 2.5GbE and HDMI 2.0b.

Choose Flashstor if you want silence, small size and SSD speed over 10GbE, for example for video editing. Choose a Lockerstor or Drivestor if you need large raw capacity from 3.5-inch hard drives.

The Lockerstor 4 Gen3 (AS6804T) ships with 16 GB of DDR5 ECC memory. The Flashstor 6 Gen2 (FS6806X) supports ECC memory modules. The other models in this guide use non-ECC DDR4.

The Lockerstor 4 Gen3 has two 10GbE ports and both Flashstor models have one. The Lockerstor 4 and 6 Gen2+ and the Lockerstor 4 Gen3 have a PCIe slot for a 10GbE card such as the AS-T10G3.
