The PowerShield Defender 650VA (PSD650) is a line-interactive UPS rated 650 VA / 390 W in a tower design with 2 Australian sockets (battery backup and surge protection). It delivers a simulated sine wave output on battery.

ARC IP Networks supplies the genuine PowerShield PSD650 in Australia with the full PowerShield Australian warranty (2 years with advance replacement) and Australia-wide delivery.

PowerShield Defender 650VA overview

The Defender is PowerShield's most popular UPS range: line-interactive with automatic voltage regulation (AVR) that bucks and boosts unstable mains to within 10% of nominal, plus PowerShield's best-in-class surge protection. The PSD650 is rated 650 VA / 390 W (PowerShield calculates Defender output at power factor 0.6) and provides a simulated sine wave output on battery with a 6 ms (typical) transfer time.

It provides 2 Australian sockets (battery backup and surge protection), runs on 12 V 9 Ah x 1 battery and gives about 6 min of backup at 50% load. Batteries are user-replaceable and hot-swappable, which extends the service life of the UPS.

Everyday features

The LCD shows input and output voltage, load and remaining battery time. The UPS restarts automatically when AC power returns, can cold start from battery, and keeps charging its batteries when switched off. Defender Tower models have no fans, so they run silently (under 40 dB), which suits AV setups. USB with HID lets Windows, Apple, Linux and NAS devices shut down in an orderly way, and the free PowerShield NetGuard software adds monitoring.

Where it fits

PowerShield lists the Defender for home office applications, workstations, security applications, point of sale equipment and NAS drives. It is a strong choice for NBN modems and routers, small business PCs and security recorders where line-interactive protection with AVR is enough.

Other PowerShield published runtime figures

PowerShield publishes this backup time for the PSD650 at 50% load. To size a UPS, PowerShield suggests adding the watts of the equipment to protect and dividing by 0.7 to get the VA rating the UPS must exceed.

Compatibility and fit

PowerShield accessories that match this model, from PowerShield's datasheets, battery selection guide and accessory listings (replacement batteries matched on the 12 V 9 Ah battery type):

  • Replacement batteries: PSB12-9 (12V 9Ah Replacement UPS Battery), PSB12-9-10YR (12V 9Ah Long Life UPS Battery)

Synology NAS pairing (PowerShield guide)

PowerShield's Synology UPS selection guide pairs the PSD650 with Synology desktop NAS models and lists about 52 minutes of battery run time. The guide gives this same figure for every desktop NAS load up to 69 W (for example the DS1817 at 69 W).

PowerShield lists the PSD650 as not expandable with external battery banks; for longer runtime choose a larger model or an expandable range.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the PowerShield PSD650 from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.

The PSD650 is the PowerShield Defender 650VA line-interactive UPS, rated 650 VA / 390 W with 2 Australian sockets (battery backup and surge protection).

No. The PSD650 is a line-interactive UPS. It uses automatic voltage regulation (AVR) to correct high and low mains voltage without switching to battery, and transfers to battery in 6 ms (typical) when mains fails. For zero transfer time choose a Centurion online UPS.

No. The PSD650 outputs a simulated sine wave in battery mode. For equipment that needs a pure sine wave, such as some active PFC power supplies, motors and gate controllers, choose a Commander or Centurion model.

About 19 minutes at 200 VA (140 W) and 12 minutes at 300 VA (210 W) with the UPS alone, per PowerShield's runtime chart. Real runtime varies with temperature and battery age.

No. PowerShield lists the PSD650 as not expandable with external battery banks. For longer runtime choose a larger model or an expandable Commander RT or Centurion model.

No, not directly. The PSD650 has a USB interface with HID support and the free NetGuard software for a locally connected computer or NAS, but no network card slot. For network monitoring choose a Defender Rackmount, Commander or Centurion with an intelligent slot.

Yes, for NAS devices that support USB HID UPS signalling. PowerShield states the PSD650 supports HID for Windows, Apple, Linux and NAS devices, so a connected NAS or computer can shut down in an orderly way during a long outage.

Up to 390 W and 650 VA. PowerShield suggests adding up the watts of the equipment you want to protect and dividing by 0.7 to get the VA rating the UPS must exceed, then allowing headroom for runtime.
