Most Australian houses need a 4 to 6 camera wired PoE system: turret cameras at the front door, back door and backyard, a bullet camera on the driveway, and a PoE NVR that powers and records every camera over one network cable each. Choose 5MP for value or 4K (8MP) for the most detail, pick colour night vision, and add a surveillance hard drive. There is no monthly subscription.
Quick pick: small home or unit: 2 camera 5MP. Typical house: 4 camera 5MP or 4 camera 4K. House with a long driveway: 6 camera or driveway system with a number plate camera. Large property: 8 camera 4K. Every system is on our security camera systems page, and the kits are 10% less than buying the parts separately.

What is in a home security camera system?
- Cameras: turrets for eaves and doorways, bullets for the driveway and gate.
- A PoE NVR (network video recorder): each camera plugs in with one network cable that carries power and video, and the NVR records 24/7. Read more in What is a PoE NVR?
- A surveillance hard drive: sized for how many days of footage you want to keep. Our kits do not include one, so you can choose the size.
- Network cables from each camera back to the NVR, run through the roof or walls.
- The free app: live view, playback and alerts on your phone.

How many cameras does a house need?
Start with the ways in, then add the places you want to watch:
- Front door (for faces and deliveries)
- Back door or rear sliding door
- Driveway and cars
- Side passage or side gate
- Backyard, shed or pool area
That is why 4 to 6 cameras suits most homes. Buy a recorder with spare channels so you can add a camera later without replacing it: the 8-channel NVR in our 4K and 6 camera kits leaves room to grow. Our guide How many security cameras do I need? walks through it room by room.
Turret or bullet cameras?
Turrets are the compact, ball-shaped cameras. They suit eaves, doorways and the backyard: the lens is not behind a glass dome, so there is no night-vision glare. Bullets are the longer, tube-shaped cameras. They suit the driveway and gate, where their longer range and visible shape help put off intruders. Most of our home kits use turrets around the house and one or two bullets for the driveway.

5MP or 4K: which resolution?
4K (8MP) records about four times the detail of 1080p, so you can zoom into a recording to make out a face or a number plate. 5MP is the value choice and is plenty for general views of a yard or side passage. One thing to check: a 4K camera needs an NVR that records 8MP. The JVS-ND7008-PD01 records 8MP 4K; the 4-channel JVS-ND7004-PD01 records up to 5MP. Our 4K kits are matched to the 8MP recorder. See all 4K security cameras or our 2MP vs 4MP vs 8MP guide.
Colour night vision
Standard cameras switch to black-and-white infrared at night. Colour night vision cameras keep recording in colour using a sensitive sensor and built-in white light, so you can tell the colour of a jacket or a car. Smart dual-light models stay on infrared and switch the light on when they detect a person. Every camera in our home kits has colour night vision except the 5MP bullet in the 4 camera 5MP kit and the number plate camera in the driveway kit, which use infrared. More on our colour night vision cameras page.

Wired PoE or Wi-Fi?
If you can run cables, choose wired PoE. One cable per camera carries power and video, so there are no power points to install at the cameras, no batteries to charge and no Wi-Fi dropouts, and the NVR keeps recording even when the internet is down. Choose Wi-Fi only where cables cannot be run, such as a rental. See Wired vs wireless security cameras and our page on security cameras without a subscription.
Can you install it yourself?
Yes, if you are comfortable running network cables. Each camera connects to the NVR with a single cable, the NVR connects to your router, and the app finds the system by QR code. The hard part is the cabling through the roof and walls, so many people use an electrician or data cabler for that and plug the system in themselves. Each cable run can be up to 100m from the NVR.

Common questions
Straight answers from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.
Most houses need 4 to 6: front door, back door, driveway, side passage and backyard. Large properties or homes with sheds may need 8. Choose an NVR with spare channels so you can add cameras later.
For most homes, a wired PoE system with 4 to 6 cameras, colour night vision and local recording to an NVR. Jovision home systems at ARC IP Networks range from a 2 camera 5MP starter to an 8 camera 4K system.
Wired PoE is more reliable: one cable per camera carries power and video, and recording continues without Wi-Fi or internet. Wi-Fi cameras suit renters and places where cables cannot be run.
4K (8MP) gives the most detail when you zoom in, which helps with faces and number plates. 5MP is the value choice. 4K cameras need an NVR that records 8MP, such as the Jovision JVS-ND7008-PD01.
Our Jovision kits do not. You add a surveillance hard drive sized for how many days of footage you want to keep.
No. Footage records to the hard drive in the NVR at your home, and the phone app is free.
Yes, if you can run a network cable to each camera. Many people have an electrician or data cabler run the cables and then plug the system in themselves.
Turrets for eaves, doors and the backyard (compact, no night-vision glare). Bullets for the driveway and gate (longer range and a visible deterrent).
