Port planning for an NVR: count cameras, then add uplinks
A CCTV switch has two jobs: power each camera over PoE and carry its video to the NVR. Plan it in this order:
- One PoE port per camera. 4, 8, 16 or 24 cameras map neatly onto the RG-ES207GS-P, RG-ES211GS-P, RG-ES220GS-P-V2 and RG-ES228GS-P-V2.
- Uplinks for the NVR and the network. Each model has non-PoE Gigabit ports beside the PoE ports: 2 on the RG-ES207GS-P, RG-ES211GS-P, RG-ES220GS-P-V2 and RG-ES228GS-P-V2. Plug the NVR into one and your router or main switch into the other, so remote viewing works over the NBN.
- SFP for fibre. The SFP port takes a fibre module when the switch sits in another building or at the far end of a long run. See our Ruijie SFP modules.
- Leave spare ports. Sites grow: a 16-port switch for 12 cameras leaves room for the next four.
PoE budget: add up the cameras, not the ports
The PoE budget is the total power a switch can share across its ports. Add the maximum power draw from each camera's datasheet (heaters, IR and PTZ motors all raise it) and keep the total comfortably under the budget. The RG-ES207GS-P shares 54 W across 4 PoE+ ports, the RG-ES211GS-P 120 W across 8, the RG-ES220GS-P-V2 250 W across 16 and the RG-ES228GS-P-V2 370 W across 24.
High-power PTZ cameras need PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt). The RG-ES207GS-HP has PoE++ on ports 1 and 2 and PoE+ on ports 3 and 4, from a 120 W budget. For a deeper look at PoE classes and budgets, read what PoE switch do I need.
Long-distance PoE: up to 250 m
Cameras on a boundary fence, at a farm gate or across a car park are often further from the cabinet than a normal Ethernet run allows. Ruijie's CCTV solution supports PoE and data transmission of up to 250 m on supported switches, set from the Ruijie Reyee app. The trade-off, in Ruijie's words: "After long-distance data transmission is enabled, the transmission and speed of port will be changed to full-duplex/10Mbps." Fine for one camera, not for an uplink.
Ruijie lists the 250 m mode on the RG-ES220GS-P and the RG-ES210GS-P. If you need it on another model, check Ruijie's datasheet for that model or ask us before you design around it. For longer distances, use fibre on the SFP port or a Reyee wireless bridge.
The CCTV tools that save a site visit
These switches are "smart" because the Ruijie Cloud app can see and fix camera problems remotely:
- IP camera recognition. Ruijie's IPC auto detection identifies the models and brands of connected cameras, so you can see which port each one is on.
- PoE watchdog and remote PoE reboot. Ruijie says these two features "solve most of the CCTV issues": a frozen camera is power-cycled automatically, or by you from the app.
- Perpetual PoE. On the RG-ES207GS-P, RG-ES211GS-P, RG-ES220GS-P-V2, RG-ES228GS-P-V2 and RG-ES207GS-HP, "PoE ports provide uninterrupted power even during switch restarts", so a firmware update does not drop every camera.
- Smart Protection and AI Failover. One-click Smart Protection guards against loops and broadcast storms, and Ruijie's datasheets list AI Failover for service continuity.
- 6 kV surge protection on the RG-ES207GS-P, RG-ES211GS-P, RG-ES220GS-P-V2, RG-ES228GS-P-V2 and RG-ES207GS-HP, and ERPS ring support through the two SFP ports on the RG-ES220GS-P-V2 and RG-ES228GS-P-V2.
Outdoor CCTV: the RG-ES207GS-PI-OD
The RG-ES207GS-PI-OD is a 7-port outdoor switch (5 Gigabit RJ45 and 2 SFP) that Ruijie describes as "all-in-one", combining four devices into one enclosure. It is rated IP65 (fully dustproof and jet-water resistant), runs from −30°C to +65°C and has ±8 kV PoE surge protection. It mounts on a wall or pole and is powered by PoE in or 12 V DC, which Ruijie pitches for solar-powered outdoor sites: no dedicated power cabling to the pole. Its two SFP ports support ERPS rings, so a line of poles can be linked by fibre.
Its sibling, the RG-ES207GS-AC-OD, takes AC mains input and has a 60 W PoE budget.
Ruijie Cloud: no licence, no controller
Ruijie describes Ruijie Cloud as "a centralized, license-free platform", and lists lifetime free cloud management on these switches. For CCTV, Ruijie highlights SON to set up a whole network quickly (within 150 s), creating a CCTV VLAN in a few steps, and NAT traversal to maintain NVRs and cameras remotely. Putting cameras on their own VLAN, with port isolation, keeps camera traffic away from office PCs, a sensible step for sites that hold footage of staff and customers under the Privacy Act. Match the switch to your camera count: the RG-ES207GS-P for 4 cameras, the RG-ES211GS-P for 8, the RG-ES220GS-P-V2 for 16 and the RG-ES228GS-P-V2 for 24. Then check that the total camera power stays under the PoE budget (54 W, 120 W, 250 W and 370 W).
The RG-ES220GS-P-V2 has 16 PoE+ ports and a 250 W PoE budget, so it runs up to 16 cameras as long as their combined maximum draw stays under 250 W. It also has 2 Gigabit ports for the NVR and router and 2 SFP ports for fibre.
Ruijie's CCTV solution supports PoE and data up to 250 m on supported switches, such as the RG-ES220GS-P and RG-ES210GS-P. When long-distance mode is on, the port runs at 10 Mbps full duplex, which suits a single camera stream.
Ruijie says Perpetual PoE means the PoE ports provide uninterrupted power even during switch restarts, so cameras stay up while the switch reboots or updates its firmware.
