Professional Overview

The In-Wall form factor solves a specific problem: covering many small rooms without hanging an access point in each ceiling. It mounts to a standard wall box in place of a data outlet, so the room gets WiFi and wired ports from the same plate. That makes it the default choice for hotels, student accommodation and apartments, where per-room coverage matters more than raw aggregate throughput.

Radio performance is genuine WiFi 6 with six spatial streams: 4x4 downlink and uplink MU-MIMO on 5 GHz reaching 4.8 Gbps at 160 MHz channel width, and 2x2 on 2.4 GHz reaching 573.5 Mbps at 40 MHz. Antenna gain is 5.9 dBi at 5 GHz and 5 dBi at 2.4 GHz, with maximum transmit power of 26 dBm and 22 dBm respectively. Ubiquiti rates coverage at 115 m² and 250+ concurrent clients, and supports up to 8 BSSIDs per radio — enough to run separate guest, staff and IoT networks off one unit.

The built-in switch is what makes it more than an access point. Four GbE data-out ports serve the room's wired devices — a TV, a phone, a desk — from the single GbE uplink, and one of those ports supplies PoE output for a downstream device such as a camera or a desk phone. That output is why the power requirement matters: the AP itself runs on standard PoE at up to 13W, but PoE+ input is required if you intend to use the PoE output port.

The enclosure is plastic and aluminium on an aluminium mount, included in the box. Management is over Ethernet or Bluetooth, with a white/blue system LED. Operating range is -30 to 60°C at 5 to 95% non-condensing humidity, and certifications are CE, FCC, IC, SRRC and Anatel. It requires UniFi Network 6.0.45 or later. Australian stock from ARC IP Networks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the U6-IW cover?

Ubiquiti rates it at 115 m² with 250+ concurrent connected devices — sized for a single room rather than an open floor.

How fast is it?

4.8 Gbps on 5 GHz at 160 MHz channel width using 4x4 MU-MIMO, and 573.5 Mbps on 2.4 GHz at 40 MHz using 2x2. Six spatial streams in total.

Does it need PoE or PoE+?

Standard PoE runs the access point itself, at up to 13W. PoE+ input is required if you want to use the single PoE output port to power a downstream device.

How many wired ports does it have?

Five in total: one GbE uplink (data-in) and four GbE data-out ports, one of which supports PoE output.

How is it mounted?

To a wall, using the mount included in the box. It is designed to sit in place of a wall data outlet.

What temperature range does it tolerate?

-30 to 60°C at 5 to 95% non-condensing humidity.

What software version does it need?

UniFi Network version 6.0.45 or later.

How many SSIDs can it broadcast?

Up to 8 BSSIDs per radio.
