Netgear M4250 AV Line: AV over IP Switches for Dante, NDI and AVB

Netgear M4250 AV Line switches for Australian venues: IGMP Plus, Dante, NDI and AVB profiles, PoE+ and Ultra90 PoE++, and which model to buy.

The Netgear M4250 AV Line is a family of managed switches built for audio and video over IP. Every model ships pre-configured with NETGEAR IGMP Plus, so multicast AV streams work out of the box, and adds an AV web interface with ready-made port profiles for Dante, Q-SYS, AES67 and AVB audio and NVX, NDI, Q-SYS and Dante video. The range runs from the fanless desktop GSM4210PD (8 PoE+ ports) through the 1U GSM4212P, GSM4212PX, GSM4212UX, GSM4230P, GSM4230PX, GSM4230UP, GSM4248P and GSM4248PX to the 2U GSM4248UX with 40 Ultra90 PoE++ ports, plus the MSM4214X (12 x 2.5G) and XSM4216F (16 x 10G SFP+) aggregation switches.

Quick pick: meeting room or lectern → GSM4210PD; Dante audio rack → GSM4230P; displays and PTZ cameras needing 60W to 90W → GSM4212UX; large video-over-IP rack with 10G uplinks → GSM4248PX. ARC IP Networks is an authorised Netgear reseller and supplies genuine Netgear from Australian stock with a GST tax invoice.

Netgear M4250 AV Line at a glance

Netgear designed the M4250 with input from AV professionals. Its datasheet notes that AV codecs generally use 1Gbps or 10Gbps per stream, and the M4250 targets the widespread 1Gbps codecs: every edge port is Gigabit, with 1G or 10G uplinks. All models share the same Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching engine, so the AV settings you learn on one apply to all of them.

IGMP Plus: multicast that works out of the box

Video encoders, decoders and most networked audio send their streams as multicast. On an ordinary switch, multicast without IGMP snooping and a querier floods every port, and a few HD streams can swamp a network. The M4250 ships with NETGEAR IGMP Plus pre-configured on the default VLAN 1, so, in Netgear's words, AV-over-IP multicasting "will work out of the box and not flood your network".

IGMP Plus also works across several switches. Netgear's datasheet says it lets transmitters and receivers be connected across multiple M4250, M4300, M4350 and M4500 switches in a star topology, removing the need for Layer 3 PIM routing. Combined with Auto-LAG and Auto-Trunk, which configure the links between switches automatically, you plug the switches together and the AV network forms. IGMP Plus can be moved to another VLAN when you want to keep AV apart from office traffic.

Dante, NDI, Q-SYS and AVB port profiles

Alongside the full IT web interface, every M4250 has a second, AV web interface (at the switch's IP address on port 8080) designed for AV installers. Instead of hunting through IT settings you pick a colour-coded profile per port:

  • Audio: Dante, Q-SYS, AES67 and AVB.
  • Video: NVX, SVSI, Q-SYS, NDI, Kramer KDS, Aurora Multimedia, ZeeVee, Atlona, Dante and SDVoE, per Netgear's product brief.
  • Mixed: audio, video and control profiles together, for rooms where a DSP, a camera and a control processor share one switch.

The NETGEAR Engage Controller manages M4250, M4300, M4350 and M4500 switches together for an AV installation. For IT teams, the same switches offer a CLI over console, Telnet and SSH, SNMP, sFlow and RSPAN, so a university or council IT department can run them like any other managed switch.

AVB and PTP timing

AVB (Audio Video Bridging) is an IEEE standard that Netgear's datasheet describes as "used most often when very low latency is required such as in live performances when lip sync is critical". The M4250 supports IEEE 802.1BA AVB with gPTP (802.1AS), up to 256 AVB streams per switch, and AVB over link aggregation. AVB is enabled with a separate electronic licence for each model (for example AVB4230P-10000S for the GSM4230P), with the activation key sent by email, so budget for it if your system uses AVB rather than Dante.

For Dante and AES67, which rely on PTP clocking, every M4250 supports IEEE 1588 PTPv2 Transparent Clock (1-step, end-to-end). If your project needs SMPTE ST 2110 with PTP Boundary or Grandmaster Clock modes, that is supported on select M4350 models, covered in our Netgear 10G switch guide.

PoE+ or Ultra90 PoE++: powering AV endpoints

PoE+ (802.3at) gives up to 30W per port: enough for Dante wall plates, ceiling microphones, most encoders and decoders, touch panels and many cameras. The Ultra90 PoE++ models (GSM4212UX, GSM4230UP and GSM4248UX) are compatible with 802.3af (15.4W), 802.3at (30W) and 802.3bt at 60W, 75W and 90W, for PTZ cameras, PoE displays and other endpoints that PoE+ cannot run.

Add up the rated draw of every device and compare it with the budget. A GSM4248PX has 960W for 40 PoE+ ports, enough for all 40 ports at the full 30W at once; a GSM4230P has 300W across 24 ports. Our PoE switch guide explains PoE budgets in more detail, and the Netgear PoE switch comparison covers the non-AV range.

Made for AV racks, lecterns and the back of a screen

The rackmount M4250 models put all ports at the rear and show status on a black front panel, so they sit neatly with amplifiers and processors. Mounting is reversible when you want ports at the front, and a second pair of brackets recesses the switch 5 cm to leave room for cabling. Threaded holes underneath (4 x M5 for 50 x 100 mm VESA) and an M10 clamp hole at the front allow mounting outside a rack.

Fan noise matters in a boardroom or a recording space. The fans are software controlled: quiet mode keeps the GSM4212PX at 27.4dBA across its whole 240W budget, and several models can turn the fans off entirely when ambient temperature and PoE load allow. The desktop GSM4210PD is totally fanless at its full 110W load.

Building a bigger AV network: edge, aggregation and fibre

Netgear designs the M4250 for a star topology: edge switches in each room or rack, linked back to an aggregation switch. Two M4250 models do that job without PoE. The MSM4214X has 12 x 2.5G RJ45 ports and 2 x 10G SFP+ in a chassis only 100 mm deep. The XSM4216F has 16 x 10G SFP+ ports, of which ports 1 to 12 also take 1G modules, for fibre runs between floors or buildings.

Fibre uplinks need SFP or SFP+ modules: the AGM731F (1G multimode), AGM732F (1G single mode up to 10km), AXM761 (10G multimode) and AXM762 (10G single mode up to 10km) are all listed in Netgear's M4250 datasheet. Our Netgear SFP and SFP+ guide explains which module suits which cable. When a project grows to 10G or 25G AV codecs, Netgear's M4350 range brings the same AV interface to larger hardware, and Netgear's Pro AV Design team can help with system design.

Common questions

Straight answers from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.

A range of Netgear managed switches built for audio and video over IP. They ship pre-configured with NETGEAR IGMP Plus for multicast, add an AV web interface with Dante, Q-SYS, AES67, AVB, NVX and NDI port profiles, and come in desktop, 1U and 2U models from 8 to 48 ports with PoE+ or Ultra90 PoE++.

Yes. Dante is one of the built-in audio profiles, IGMP Plus handles multicast out of the box, and every M4250 supports PTPv2 Transparent Clock. For a Dante audio rack the GSM4230P (24 PoE+ ports, 300W) is a common choice.

Yes. Netgear lists NDI among the M4250 video profiles, alongside NVX, SVSI, Q-SYS, Kramer KDS, Aurora Multimedia, ZeeVee, Atlona, Dante and SDVoE.

IGMP Plus is pre-configured on VLAN 1 of every M4250 so AV-over-IP multicast works out of the box without flooding the network. It also lets encoders and decoders connect across multiple M4250, M4300, M4350 and M4500 switches in a star topology without Layer 3 PIM routing.

The Ultra90 PoE++ models: GSM4212UX (8 ports, 720W), GSM4230UP (24 ports, 720W or 1,440W with both PSUs) and GSM4248UX (40 ports, up to 2,880W with three PSUs). They also power 802.3af and 802.3at devices.

The M4250 targets 1Gbps AV codecs with 1G or 10G uplinks. The M4350 brings the same AV interface and IGMP Plus to larger hardware with 2.5G and 10G ports, 25G and 100G uplinks, redundant power and SMPTE ST 2110 on select models.
