Yes, solar security cameras work in winter, if the solar is sized for winter and the panel is placed well. Shorter, cloudier days mean less charge, so what matters is the panel size, the battery and how frugally the camera runs. The Jovision JVS-N47-AOR pairs a 12W panel with a 10,400mAh battery and runs over 2 weeks with no sun in its low-power AOV mode.
Quick tips: face the panel north, tilt it more steeply for the low winter sun, keep it clear of shade from trees and buildings, and use AI detection so the camera only wakes for people and vehicles. See all options on our solar and 4G security cameras page. The N47-AOR is set up in our Blackburn, Victoria showroom if you want to see it working.

Why winter is the real test for a solar camera
Any solar camera works in January. Winter is where cheap ones fail, especially across Victoria, Tasmania, southern New South Wales, South Australia and the tablelands. Three things change at once:
- Shorter days: fewer hours of charging, and longer nights for the battery to cover.
- A lower sun: light hits a flat or north-facing panel at a shallower angle, and shadows from trees, sheds and fences are much longer than in summer.
- Runs of overcast days: a panel still charges under cloud, but far less, so the battery has to carry the camera through grey weeks.
That is why the battery reserve and the camera's power use matter more than the headline panel wattage.
What to check before you buy a solar camera for winter
| Check | Why it matters in winter | JVS-N47-AOR |
|---|---|---|
| Battery reserve | Carries the camera through overcast weeks | 10,400mAh, over 2 weeks without sun in AOV mode |
| Panel size | More watts recover the battery faster on short days | 12W solar panel |
| Low-power recording | Recording 24/7 at full frame rate drains a battery fast | AOV: 24/7 at a low frame rate, full frame rate on detection |
| AI detection | Fewer false wake-ups from wind, rain and animals saves battery | Human and vehicle detection |
| Operating temperature | Frosty sites can fall below a camera's rating | −5°C to 45°C |
| Weather rating | Winter rain and wind | IP66 |
| 4G bands | The camera must work on your carrier's bands at the site | LTE bands 1, 3, 5 and 8 (no band 28) |

How to place a solar camera so it keeps running through winter
- Face the panel north. In Australia the sun tracks across the northern sky, and in winter it sits lower.
- Tilt it more steeply than you would for summer. A steeper panel catches more of the low winter sun and sheds rain and dust better.
- Check for winter shade. A spot that is sunny in summer can sit in the shadow of a shed, tree line or hill from May to August. Look at it in the middle of the day in winter if you can.
- Keep the panel clean. Dust, bird droppings and leaves cut output; a wipe at the start of winter helps.
- Mount it high. Out of easy reach for security, and usually above low shade too.
- Check 4G coverage at the exact spot. A weak signal makes the camera work harder and use more power. Check your carrier covers bands 1, 3, 5 or 8 there.

Camera settings that stretch the battery in winter
- Use AOV mode. The JVS-N47-AOR records 24/7 at a low frame rate while nothing is happening and switches to full frame rate when it detects a person or vehicle. You keep a continuous record without the power cost.
- Set detection zones. Draw the zone around the gate, driveway or shed door, not the road or trees beyond it.
- Use human and vehicle detection instead of plain motion, so wind, rain and animals do not wake the camera all night.
- Check live view sparingly. Long live-view sessions over 4G use battery and data; play back the recorded clip instead.

Yes, if the solar is sized for winter. The panel still charges on short and overcast days, and the battery covers the gaps. The Jovision JVS-N47-AOR runs over 2 weeks with no sun in its low-power AOV mode.
Yes. Panels still charge under cloud, just less. A large battery reserve and low-power recording carry the camera through runs of grey days.
North, with a clear view of the sky. In winter tilt it more steeply to catch the low sun, and check the spot is not shaded by buildings or trees in the middle of the day.
It depends on the camera and settings. The Jovision JVS-N47-AOR, with a 10,400mAh battery, runs over 2 weeks without sun in AOV mode.
The JVS-N47-AOR records 24/7 at a low frame rate and switches to full frame rate when it detects a person or vehicle, which saves battery and storage.
The JVS-N47-AOR is rated from −5°C to 45°C. For alpine or very frosty sites that go colder, ask us before you buy.
Not for a 4G model: it uses a mobile SIM. Solar Wi-Fi models such as the JVS-N97-SW need your Wi-Fi to reach the camera.
LTE bands 1, 3, 5 and 8 (2100, 1800, 850 and 900 MHz). They do not support band 28 (700 MHz), so check your carrier covers the site on those bands.
No camera subscription. Footage records to a microSD card in the camera. The only ongoing cost is the data plan on the SIM you choose.
