Professional Overview

The Ubiquiti UDM-Pro-Max is a enterprise gateway for the UniFi ecosystem. 10G Cloud Gateway with 200+ UniFi device / 2,000+ client support, 5 Gbps IPS routing, and redundant NVR storage.

it delivers 5 Gbps IDS/IPS throughput for enterprise-grade security and traffic management.

Managed via the UniFi Network app for centralised configuration, DPI, and traffic analytics.

In a Rack mount (1U) form factor weighing 4.7 kg, the UDM-Pro-Max is designed for reliable 24/7 operation. Australian stock, fast shipping from ARC IP Networks.

Part of our Ubiquiti UniFi Routers range — browse and compare the full range of UniFi gateways, Dream Machines and routers.

Ubiquiti UDM-Pro-Max: the flagship 1U Dream Machine

The UniFi Dream Machine Pro Max is Ubiquiti's highest-capacity rack-mount Dream Machine. It is a 10G cloud gateway that runs the full UniFi application suite — Network, Protect, Access, Talk and Innerspace — from a single 1U appliance, with 5 Gbps IDS/IPS routing, support for 2,000+ clients and 200+ UniFi devices.

Ubiquiti positions it as roughly double the device and client capacity of the Dream Machine Pro and SE. That comes from a faster 2.0 GHz quad-core processor and 8 GB of memory, against 1.7 GHz and 4 GB in its siblings.

UDM-Pro-Max vs UDM-SE vs UDM-Pro

All three are 1U rack-mount Dream Machines sharing the same 55,000+ IDS/IPS signature set with CyberSecure, the same Shadow Mode (VRRP) gateway failover, and the same maximum of 8 WAN ports. The differences are capacity, storage and power.

Important: the Pro Max has no PoE

This is the detail that most often catches people upgrading, so it is worth stating plainly. The UDM-SE includes a 180W PoE budget and can power access points and cameras directly. The UDM-Pro-Max does not have PoE at all, and neither does the UDM-Pro.

If you are moving from a UDM-SE to a Pro Max for the extra capacity, you will need a PoE switch to power whatever the SE was feeding. Budget for it in the same order rather than discovering it during the cutover.

The trade-off is deliberate: the Pro Max spends its power and thermal headroom on compute and a second drive bay instead of PoE injection, which is the right call in a rack that already has switching.

Storage and video recording

The Pro Max is the only Dream Machine with two 3.5-inch NVR drive bays, which is what enables RAID data protection for surveillance footage — a single-bay recorder cannot protect against a drive failure.

Alongside those bays sit a built-in 128 GB SSD for detection recordings and faster UI responsiveness, plus 32 GB of eMMC for the system itself.

Camera capacity is 50 HD, 25 2K or 15 4K streams — roughly double the UDM-SE. If you need more than that, a dedicated recorder is the better path; our UniFi Protect NVR comparison covers the options, and the Protect camera range shows what pairs with it.

Ports, WAN and redundancy

  • LAN: (8) GbE RJ45 plus (1) 10G SFP+
  • WAN: (1) 10G SFP+ plus (1) 2.5 GbE RJ45 as defaults, and up to 8 WAN ports can be configured
  • Failover: Shadow Mode (VRRP) gateway failover, so a second unit can take over if the primary fails
  • Power redundancy: universal AC input plus a USP-RPS DC input, and it is UniFi Power Backup ready
  • Display: 1.3-inch touchscreen for status and setup

Ubiquiti recommends pairing the SFP+ ports with an official SFP+ module or SFP+ to RJ45 adapter for the best experience. Note that the eight LAN ports are gigabit, not 2.5 GbE — the multi-gig capability is on the SFP+ and the WAN port.

Who the UDM-Pro-Max is for

  • Sites that outgrew a UDM-Pro or SE. Double the clients, double the managed devices and a faster inspection engine, without changing platform.
  • Multi-tenant and larger business sites running 2,000+ clients across a substantial UniFi estate.
  • Deployments needing RAID-protected video where a single drive bay is not acceptable.
  • Full UniFi suite sites running Network, Protect, Access, Talk and Innerspace together on one appliance, with 150 managed Access hubs.
  • Anyone wanting 5 Gbps IPS — if you have a multi-gig internet service, the 3.5 Gbps of the Pro and SE becomes the ceiling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the UDM-Pro-Max and the UDM-SE?

The Pro Max has 5 Gbps IDS/IPS versus 3.5 Gbps, supports 2,000 clients versus 1,000, manages 200+ UniFi devices versus 100+, has 8 GB of memory versus 4 GB, and has two 3.5-inch drive bays versus one. The key thing the SE has that the Pro Max does not is a 180W PoE budget.

Does the UDM-Pro-Max have PoE?

No. Neither the UDM-Pro-Max nor the UDM-Pro provides PoE. Only the UDM-SE includes a PoE budget, at 180W. If you need to power access points or cameras from the gateway, you will need a separate PoE switch.

How many clients can the UDM-Pro-Max handle?

Up to 2,000 simultaneous clients and 200+ managed UniFi devices, which is roughly double the capacity of the Dream Machine Pro and SE.

How fast is the firewall?

5 Gbps of IDS/IPS routing throughput, with 55,000+ threat signatures when CyberSecure is enabled.

How many cameras can it record?

50 HD, 25 2K or 15 4K camera streams, using its two 3.5-inch NVR drive bays plus the built-in 128 GB SSD.

Can I run RAID on the UDM-Pro-Max?

Yes. It is the only Dream Machine with two 3.5-inch NVR bays, which allows RAID data protection for recorded video. Single-bay models cannot protect against a drive failure.

What hard drives does it take?

Two 3.5-inch drives in the NVR bays. Surveillance-rated drives are recommended for continuous recording.

What ports does the UDM-Pro-Max have?

Eight GbE RJ45 LAN ports and one 10G SFP+ LAN port, plus one 10G SFP+ and one 2.5 GbE RJ45 as default WAN ports. Up to eight WAN ports can be configured.

Are the LAN ports 2.5 GbE?

No. The eight LAN ports are gigabit. The multi-gig connectivity is on the 10G SFP+ ports and the 2.5 GbE WAN port.

Does it support redundant power?

Yes. It has a universal AC input and a USP-RPS DC input, and is UniFi Power Backup ready. It also supports Shadow Mode (VRRP) gateway failover for redundancy at the gateway level.

How much rack space does it need?

One rack unit. It measures 442.4 x 43.7 x 285.6 mm and weighs 4.7 kg.

Is there a licence or subscription fee?

No. UniFi has no recurring licensing costs. CyberSecure is the one optional paid add-on for the expanded threat signature set.

Is the UDM-Pro-Max available in Australia?
