Professional Overview

The Ubiquiti UCG-Max is a enterprise gateway for the UniFi ecosystem. Compact 2.5G Cloud Gateway with 30+ UniFi device / 300+ client support, 2.3 Gbps IPS routing, and selectable NVR storage.

it delivers 2.3 Gbps IDS/IPS throughput for enterprise-grade security and traffic management.

Managed via the UniFi Network app for centralised configuration, DPI, and traffic analytics.

In a Compact desktop form factor weighing Without SSD: 460 g / With SSD: 519 g, the UCG-Max is designed for reliable 24/7 operation. Australian stock, fast shipping from ARC IP Networks.

Part of our Ubiquiti UniFi Routers range — browse and compare the full range of UniFi gateways, Dream Machines and routers.

Ubiquiti UCG-Max: compact gateway with storage included

The UniFi Cloud Gateway Max is Ubiquiti's compact 2.5 Gigabit cloud gateway. It routes with 2.3 Gbps of IDS/IPS, supports 300+ clients and 30+ UniFi devices, and runs the full UniFi application suite from a fanless unit 141.8 x 127.6 x 30 mm.

Its distinguishing feature is that the NVMe SSD is included. Ubiquiti lists 512 GB of NVMe storage for UniFi Protect among its key features, so unlike the UCG-Fiber — where the SSD is a separate purchase — this one records cameras out of the box.

UniFi Protect storage, included

The UCG-Max ships with 512 GB of NVMe SSD storage for UniFi Protect, and the slot is selectable nvme ssd up to 2 tb if you want more retention later.

It records (15) HD (8) 2K (5) 4K camera streams and manages 50 UniFi Access hubs.

Worth knowing when comparing: Ubiquiti also sells a UCG-Max-NS variant without storage. We stock the standard UCG-Max with the SSD included, so nothing further is needed to start recording.

For how much retention 512 GB actually buys you — which depends on camera count, resolution and bitrate — see our storage sizing guide. Beyond (15) HD (8) 2K (5) 4K streams, consider a dedicated recorder from the Protect NVR comparison.

Ports and multi-WAN

Default WAN(1) 2.5 GbE RJ45
Max. WAN ports4
MAC address table2,000
Threat signatures55,000+ with CyberSecure

All five ports are 2.5 Gigabit, so there is no speed penalty for choosing which to use, and Ubiquiti lists multi-WAN load balancing among its features — up to 4 WAN ports can be configured for failover or load sharing across two services.

There is no PoE on the UCG-Max. Access points and cameras need a PoE switch, which the gateway then manages from the same console. Our access point comparison lists the draw of each AP.

There is also no 10 Gigabit port. If your internet service is faster than 2.5 Gigabit, or hands off on fibre, the UCG-Fiber is the right model.

USB-C powered

Unusually for a gateway, the UCG-Max runs from USB-C — USB type C (5V DC/5A), with the adapter included. Maximum draw is 16.1W, dissipating 55 BTU/hr.

That makes it genuinely easy to place: no bulky power brick, and it can run from a USB-C PD source, which is useful behind a desk or in a comms cupboard with limited outlets. Being fanless it is also silent, and it will operate from -10 to 40° C (14 to 104° F).

Who the UCG-Max suits

  • Homes and small offices on services up to 2.5 Gigabit wanting a proper firewall, VLANs and VPN.
  • Anyone who wants camera recording without extra purchases — the 512 GB SSD is in the box.
  • Sites up to 300+ clients and 30+ UniFi devices.
  • Existing PoE switching, since the gateway supplies none.
  • Tight or awkward placements — USB-C powered, fanless and silent.

Need 10 Gigabit or fibre WAN? See the UCG-Fiber. Want the cheapest way into UniFi routing? The UCG-Ultra.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the UCG-Max come with an SSD?

Yes. Ubiquiti lists 512 GB of NVMe SSD storage for UniFi Protect among the UCG-Max key features, and the unit we stock includes it. Ubiquiti also sells a UCG-Max-NS variant without storage, which we do not stock.

How fast is the UCG-Max firewall?

2.3 Gbps of IDS/IPS routing throughput, with 55,000+ with CyberSecure threat signatures.

Does the UCG-Max have PoE?

No. The UCG-Max provides no PoE. Access points and cameras need a separate PoE switch, which the gateway will still manage from the same UniFi console.

Does the UCG-Max have a 10 Gigabit port?

No. All five ports are 2.5 Gigabit. If your internet service is faster than 2.5 Gbps, or arrives on fibre, the UCG-Fiber has both a 10G SFP+ and a 10 GbE RJ45 WAN port.

How many clients and devices can it handle?

300+ simultaneous clients and 30+ managed UniFi devices, plus 50 UniFi Access hubs.

How many cameras can the UCG-Max record?

(15) HD (8) 2K (5) 4K camera streams to its NVMe SSD.

Can I fit a larger SSD?

Yes. The slot is selectable nvme ssd up to 2 tb, so you can increase retention later.

How is the UCG-Max powered?

By USB-C — USB type C (5V DC/5A) — with the adapter included. Maximum draw is 16.1W.

What is the difference between the UCG-Max and the UCG-Fiber?

The Fiber is considerably faster at 5 Gbps versus 2.3 Gbps, handles 500+ clients, and adds 10G SFP+ and 10 GbE WAN ports plus a 30W PoE port. The Max is smaller, USB-C powered, and includes the NVMe SSD that the Fiber does not.

What is the difference between the UCG-Max and the UCG-Ultra?

The Max is faster at 2.3 Gbps versus 1 Gbps, has five 2.5 GbE ports rather than mostly gigabit, and includes NVMe storage for UniFi Protect. The Ultra has no NVR storage.

Is there a subscription or licence fee?

No. UniFi has no recurring licence costs. CyberSecure is the one optional paid add-on, which expands the threat signature set.
