Professional Overview

Lock cable is not network cable, and this is the spool that does the job properly. One pair of 18 AWG solid bare copper runs from the UniFi Access Hub's relay output to the electric or magnetic lock, and that gauge is chosen deliberately: locks draw real current, and the voltage drop over a long thin run is what makes a magnetic lock buzz or an electric strike fail to release cleanly.

The choice between this and the 2P version is about door position sensing. The 1P cable carries only the two 18 AWG conductors for the lock. The 2P version adds two 22 AWG conductors for a door position sensor in the same jacket, so a single pull serves both functions. If the design calls for knowing whether the door is actually closed — and for most access-controlled doors it should — the 2P is the cable to specify.

The jacket is thermoplastic elastomer rather than PVC, which stays flexible in cold and resists abrasion better during the pull. Conductors are solid rather than stranded, correct for a fixed run terminated into screw terminals at both ends.

The spool holds 152.4 m and weighs 4.58 kg. Against Ubiquiti's own published cable-length guidance for the UA Hub Door — 25 m at 24 AWG for a 400 mA electric lock, dropping to 12 m for an 800 mA magnetic lock — this 18 AWG cable is substantially heavier than the minimum, which is what buys the run length. Australian stock from ARC IP Networks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the 1P and 2P cable?

The 1P carries two 18 AWG conductors for the lock only. The 2P adds two 22 AWG conductors for a door position sensor in the same jacket. Choose 2P if the door needs position sensing.

How long is the spool?

152.4 m (500 ft).

What gauge are the conductors?

Two 18 AWG solid bare copper conductors.

What is it used for?

Connecting an electric or magnetic lock to a UniFi Access Hub relay output.

Why 18 AWG rather than something thinner?

Locks draw significant current, and voltage drop over a long thin run causes magnetic locks to buzz and electric strikes to release poorly. The heavier gauge is what allows longer runs.

What is the jacket made of?

Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), which stays flexible in cold and resists abrasion during installation.

How much does the spool weigh?

4.58 kg. The 2P version weighs 5.6 kg.
