Professional Overview

The Reader Lite is the entry point to UniFi Access hardware — the reader you fit when the door needs credential control and nothing more. There is no screen, no camera and no intercom, which is exactly why it costs a fraction of the G2 Pro and fits doors where those features would be wasted: back-of-house, storerooms, plant rooms, internal office doors.

Credentials are NFC card, the UniFi Identity mobile app over BLE 4.1, or a handwave gesture. That last one is the quietly useful feature: a wave in front of the reader releases the door without a card, which suits an exit side, a clean area, or anywhere hands are full. NFC runs at 13.56 MHz with a read range under 30 mm and supports ISO 14443A, 14443B and 15693, NFC tag types 1 through 5, and MIFARE Classic.

It is small — 94.9 x 40 x 31.1 mm and 67 g in polycarbonate — and mounts to a wall or a gang box with hardware included. IP54 covers indoor and outdoor use, though it is a lower rating than the IP55 readers in the range, so a sheltered position is preferable. Operating range is -20 to 40°C at 5 to 90% non-condensing humidity.

Power and data are one 10/100 PoE run at 44–57V DC drawing a maximum of 6W, back to a UniFi Access Hub — this is a reader, not a controller, so the hub does the door logic and drives the lock. Certification is thorough for the price: UL 294 at Level I across destructive attack, line security, endurance and standby power, plus CAN/ULC-60839-11-1 Grade I, CE, FCC, IC, SRRC and Anatel. Australian stock from ARC IP Networks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the UA-Reader Lite need a UniFi Access Hub?

Yes. It is a reader, not a controller — the hub holds the door logic and drives the lock.

What unlock methods does it support?

NFC card, the UniFi Identity mobile app over BLE 4.1, and a handwave gesture.

What is handwave unlock?

A wave of the hand in front of the reader releases the door without presenting a card — useful on an exit side or where hands are full.

Which card types does it read?

ISO 14443A, 14443B and 15693, NFC tag types 1 to 5, and MIFARE Classic, at 13.56 MHz with a read range under 30 mm.

Can it be mounted outdoors?

It is rated IP54 for indoor and outdoor use, which is a lower rating than the IP55 readers in the range — a sheltered position is preferable.

How is it powered?

PoE over one 10/100 MbE port at 44–57V DC, drawing a maximum of 6W.

How does it compare to the G2 Reader Pro?

The Reader Lite is credential-only. The G2 Pro adds a touchscreen, a 12 MP camera, two-way intercom, and PIN and face unlock.

Is it certified for access control?

Yes — UL 294 Level I across all four categories, plus CAN/ULC-60839-11-1 Grade I, CE, FCC, IC, SRRC and Anatel.
