Professional Overview

The Enterprise Firewall Core sits at the top of Ubiquiti's gateway range, and its specification is aimed squarely at networks that have outgrown a Dream Machine. Where a UDM-Pro-Max is sized for a building, EF-Core is sized for a campus core or a service-provider edge: 10 million concurrent sessions, 120,000 new sessions per second, a 130,000-entry MAC address table and 22,500 or more simultaneous connected users. It manages 2,250+ UniFi devices from the same UniFi Network application used on the rest of the range, so the operational model does not change as the network scales.

Throughput is the headline. The gateway is a 100 Gbps class device, and critically it sustains 79 Gbps with IDS/IPS enabled — deep packet inspection on most firewalls collapses throughput, and the point of the silicon here is that it does not. Signature coverage is 95,000+ with a CyberSecure Enterprise subscription. SSL/TLS inspection is supported to 10,000 concurrent sessions, and the device terminates more than 5,000 simultaneous IPsec tunnels, which is the figure that matters for hub-and-spoke or site-to-site topologies.

The port layout is fixed rather than modular: four 100G QSFP28 (also running 40G), four 25G SFP28 (25G/10G/1G), eight 10 GbE RJ45 that step down to 5G, 2.5G, 1G and 100M, and two 1 GbE RJ45. Up to eight of these can be assigned as WAN interfaces, with a default of one 100G QSFP28, one 25G SFP28 and one 10 GbE RJ45. A separate management port and an RJ45 console port keep out-of-band access independent of the data plane, and a 1.3" front touchscreen surfaces status without a laptop.

Physically it is a 442.4 x 43.7 x 400 mm 1U chassis in CNC aluminium and SGCC steel, weighing 7.85 kg. Power is universal AC 100–240V through two hot-swappable 550W supplies, drawing a maximum of 171W and dissipating 585 BTU/hr — modest for the class, and worth knowing when sizing rack cooling. Redundancy extends beyond the PSUs to Shadow Mode (VRRP) gateway failover, so a second unit can take over the routing role. Operating range is 0 to 40°C at 5 to 95% non-condensing humidity, with CE, FCC and IC certification. Australian stock from ARC IP Networks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the throughput of the UniFi Enterprise Firewall Core?

How many users and devices can the EF-Core support?

More than 22,500 simultaneous connected users and more than 2,250 managed UniFi devices.

What ports does the EF-Core have?

Four 100G QSFP28 (100G/40G), four 25G SFP28 (25G/10G/1G), eight 10 GbE RJ45 (10G/5G/2.5G/1G/100M), two 1 GbE RJ45, one management port and one console port. Up to eight ports can be assigned as WAN.

Does the EF-Core have redundant power?

Yes. It ships with two hot-swappable AC/DC 550W power supplies. It also supports Shadow Mode (VRRP) gateway failover to a second unit.

How many IPsec VPN tunnels can it terminate?

More than 5,000 concurrent IPsec tunnels.

Does IDS/IPS require a subscription?

The 95,000+ signature set is provided with CyberSecure Enterprise. The gateway itself is managed from the standard UniFi Network application at no additional licence cost.

How much rack space and power does it need?

One rack unit (442.4 x 43.7 x 400 mm, 7.85 kg). Maximum draw is 171W from a universal 100–240V AC input, dissipating 585 BTU/hr.

What are the operating conditions?

0 to 40°C ambient and 5 to 95% non-condensing humidity. Certifications are CE, FCC and IC.
