Number Plate Recognition Cameras: LPR and ANPR for Driveways and Car Parks

A number plate recognition camera (LPR or ANPR) is set up to capture readable plates on moving vehicles: a narrow, zoomed view of the lane, fast shutter and infrared that reads reflective plates at night. Placement matters as much as the camera, so it should face along the lane where vehicles slow down.

LPR, ANPR and normal cameras

  • LPR / ANPR are the same idea: licence plate recognition and automatic number plate recognition.
  • A normal wide camera sees the car but rarely a readable plate; an LPR camera is zoomed onto the lane.
  • Best placement: a straight-on view of the lane where cars slow, such as a gate, driveway entry or boom gate.
  • At night, infrared reads the reflective plate even with headlights in the shot.

How to choose

Angle

Keep the camera within a shallow angle of the lane so plates are captured straight on.

Distance and zoom

Use the motorised zoom to frame the plate area where vehicles slow down.

Night performance

Infrared reads reflective plates at night; avoid pointing straight into headlights.

One lane at a time

Each LPR camera covers one lane; a wide entry may need two.
