Cisco Meraki is Cisco's cloud-managed range: every device is claimed into the Meraki dashboard, checks in over the internet and takes firmware upgrades from the cloud. It covers MS switches (MS130, MS150 and Catalyst 9300-M), MR Wi-Fi access points (MR36, MR46, MR78), MX security and SD-WAN appliances (MX68, MX68W, MX75, MX95), the MG cellular gateway (MG52) and MV smart cameras (MV53X, MV63X). Every Meraki device needs a Meraki licence to be managed.
Quick pick: branch firewall and SD-WAN → MX95 (up to 500 devices) or MX75-HW (up to 200); outdoor Wi-Fi → MR78-HW; 5G internet or backup → MG52-HW; switching → MS150-48FP-4G. ARC IP Networks is a Cisco Registered Partner and supplies new, genuine Cisco with a GST tax invoice.

The Meraki product lines at a glance
Meraki groups its hardware into product lines that all live in the same dashboard. The licence rules differ by line, which is the part most buyers miss.
| Line | What it does | Licence | Models we list |
|---|---|---|---|
| MS switches | Cloud-managed access switching, PoE, stacking (MS150) | Per model (e.g. MS150 48-port Enterprise or Advanced) | MS130-24P, MS150-48FP-4G, C9300-24P-M |
| MR Wi-Fi | Indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi 6 access points | One MR licence for every MR model | MR36-HW, MR46-HW, MR78-HW |
| MX security and SD-WAN | Firewall, IDS/IPS, content filtering, Auto VPN | Per model, in Enterprise, Advanced Security or Secure SD-WAN Plus | MX68, MX68W-HW, MX75-HW, MX95 |
| MG cellular | 5G and LTE internet or backup | Per model (e.g. MG52 Enterprise) | MG52-HW |
| MV cameras | Smart cameras with onboard storage | One MV licence for every MV model, plus optional Cloud Archive | MV53X, MV63X-HW |

The Meraki dashboard: how management works
Setting up a Meraki device follows the same steps for every line: claim it to an organisation in the dashboard, add it to a network, connect it, power it on and let it check in and upgrade its firmware. Configuration then happens from the dashboard, from any browser. For an Australian business with sites in several states, that means one view of every switch, access point, firewall and camera, with remote troubleshooting tools such as packet capture, and no on-site controller to maintain.
The trade-off is that management depends on the licence. Meraki states that every Meraki hardware component requires a cloud licence to be managed, so the licence is part of the cost of every device, for 1 to 10 years.

MX: security and SD-WAN for every branch
The MX is a firewall, router and SD-WAN appliance in one. The MX68 suits a small branch of up to 50 devices with 700 Mbps of firewall throughput, two Gigabit WAN ports and two PoE+ LAN ports for a phone or access point; the MX68W-HW adds 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi. The MX75-HW handles up to 200 devices at 1 Gbps, and the 1RU MX95 up to 500 devices with 3 Gbps of firewall and 10GE SFP+ ports. Auto VPN builds site-to-site tunnels between MX appliances, and dual WAN gives automatic failover when an NBN service drops.
The licence decides the security features. Enterprise covers the stateful firewall, Auto VPN and SD-WAN. Advanced Security adds IDS/IPS, content filtering powered by Talos, Cisco Advanced Malware Protection and geography-based firewall rules. Secure SD-WAN Plus adds SaaS and WAN health analytics with ThousandEyes internet outage data. Meraki notes that the MX edition is uniform across an organisation, and that an MX warm spare pair needs only one licence.

MR: cloud-managed Wi-Fi
Meraki MR access points configure themselves from the cloud, with automatic firmware updates, RF optimisation, a Layer 7 firewall, WPA3 and Air Marshal rogue AP containment. The indoor MR36-HW (2x2:2, up to 1.5 Gbps) and MR46-HW (4x4:4, up to 2.98 Gbps, 2.5G uplink) add a dedicated scanning radio for WIDS/WIPS and a Bluetooth Low Energy radio. Both are covered by Cisco's Wi-Fi 6 indoor access point end-of-sale notice, with a last order date of 31 December 2026, so ask us about current models for new projects. The outdoor MR78-HW is not in that notice: it is IP67 rated for -20 to 55°C, runs on 802.3af PoE and suits courtyards, school quadrangles and car parks.
One MR licence covers any MR model: MR Enterprise for the standard features, or MR Advanced, which adds items such as AI-RRM and Adaptive Policy. MR Upgrade turns an existing Enterprise licence into Advanced.
MS: switches managed from the same dashboard
The MS130 is Layer 2 access switching in 10 models, such as the MS130-24P with 24 PoE+ ports and 370W. The MS150 adds two dedicated stack ports with 80 Gbps of stacking bandwidth and static routing; the MS150-48FP-4G has 48 PoE ports and 740W. For a bigger campus, Catalyst 9300 switches ordered as -M models, such as the C9300-24P-M, join the same dashboard. Unlike MR, each switch model has its own licence, in Enterprise or Advanced. Compare them with Catalyst in our Cisco switches guide, and see what PoE switch you need.
MG cellular and MV cameras
The MG52-HW brings 5G Standalone and LTE into the network, up to 2 Gbps down, with a cloud-managed eSIM and two SIM slots. It is IP67 rated for mounting outside where the signal is better, is powered over 802.3at PoE, and carries RCM certification; Meraki lists Optus among its certified carriers. Use it as primary internet where the NBN is slow, or as backup behind an MX.
Meraki MV cameras record to onboard solid-state storage, which Meraki says removes the need for a network video recorder. The MV53X is a 4K varifocal bullet with IR to 50m; the MV63X-HW is a 4K mini dome with a 101.3° view and EN 50155 railway compliance. Both are IP67 and IK10+ and have a five-year hardware warranty. One MV licence covers any camera model, and optional Cloud Archive licences keep continuous off-site backups for 7, 30, 90, 180 or 365 days, useful when a site policy calls for off-site copies.
The licence every Meraki device needs
Meraki licences are sold in 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10-year terms for most devices. In the co-termination model, every licence in an organisation shares one expiry date, averaged across the licences you add. In the per-device model, each licence is assigned to a device with its own expiry, though Meraki no longer accepts new conversions to per-device licensing.
If an organisation has more devices than licences, or its licences pass their expiry date, it enters a 30-day grace period. If it is not brought back into compliance, Meraki shuts the devices down until licensing is applied, and its FAQ says they stop passing traffic to the internet. Licence time also starts from when the order is processed, not when you activate it, so there is no benefit in waiting. Our Cisco and Meraki licensing guide covers renewals and co-termination in detail.
A licence is not a warranty. Meraki states lifetime hardware warranties for MX, MS, MG and indoor MR, one year for outdoor MR, and five years for MV Gen 2 and later cameras, with accessories at one year.
