Cisco IP Phones in Australia: 8800, Desk Phone 9800, DECT and MPP vs UCM

Which Cisco phone to buy: UCM or Multiplatform (MPP) for Webex Calling and hosted SIP, the new PhoneOS Desk Phone 9800, IP DECT 6825, Wireless Phone 860 and ATA 191/192.

Cisco desk phones come in two flavours. Phones ordered for Cisco Unified Communications Manager (UCM), such as the CP-8841-K9= (IP Phone 8841), register to an on-premises Cisco call manager. Multiplatform Phone (MPP) models, such as the CP-6871-3PCC-K9= and CP-8841-3PCC-K9=, ship with firmware for Webex Calling, BroadWorks and approved hosted SIP platforms. The new Desk Phone 9800 series (DP-9811-K9=, DP-9861-K9=) runs PhoneOS, so one device works with either.

Quick pick: Cisco UCM office → CP-8841-K9=; Webex Calling or hosted PBX → DP-9861-K9= or CP-6871-3PCC-K9=; reception, lobby or kitchen → DP-9811-K9=; warehouse or aged care → IP DECT 6825 Ruggedized or Wireless Phone 860; fax or analog phones → ATA192-3PW-K9. MPP or UCM: check the part number before you buy

Check this before anything else. Cisco's 7800 and 8800 phones are sold in two versions:

  • UCM models such as CP-8841-K9=, CP-8851-W-K9= and CP-8861-K9= are listed by Cisco for Cisco Unified Communications Manager (12.5 and later for the 8841). On UCM, Cisco states the 8841, 8851 and 8861 each need an Enhanced User Connect License (UCL).
  • MPP models carry part numbers that Cisco describes as "shipped with multiplatform phone firmware", such as CP-8841-3PCC-K9= and CP-7821-3PCC-K9=. Cisco's 8800 MPP data sheet lists Webex Calling, Webex Calling Carrier and BroadWorks as interoperability tested and certified, plus Asterisk, Centile and Metaswitch. That makes MPP the choice for most Australian hosted PBX and UCaaS services.

If you are moving an existing fleet from UCM to a hosted platform, note Cisco's field notice FN74296, which flags possible performance impacts for certain older 8800 hardware versions on MPP firmware. Phones that stay on Unified CM are not affected. Tell us your platform and we will quote the right version.

Desk Phone 9800: one phone for every platform

The Desk Phone 9800 series is Cisco's newest range and removes the MPP-or-UCM choice. Each phone runs PhoneOS, and Cisco lists it as interoperability tested and certified for Webex Calling, Unified CM, Webex Dedicated Instance, BroadWorks and Asterisk, and as Microsoft SIP Gateway compatible. The 9811 needs UCM version 14 or above; the other models support UCM 12.5 or above, and some UCM versions need a device package.

  • DP-9861-K9=: 5-inch 800 x 480 colour display, 10 physical line keys (up to 130 lines on UCM, 16 on Webex Calling and open SIP), dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.2, a Gigabit PC port and AI noise removal for both outgoing and incoming audio. It runs on PoE class 3 and takes one key expansion module on PoE, or up to three with the Cisco Power Adapter 3.
  • DP-9811-K9=: 2.6-inch 256 x 132 greyscale display, two line keys, a 10/100 switch and PoE class 2. Cisco names it the successor to the IP Phone 6901 and IP Phone 7811.

Every 9800 phone has a customisable action button that Cisco lists for emergency alerts, security and paging, useful for schools, clinics and front counters. The series is covered by Cisco's 1-Year Limited Hardware Warranty.

IP Phone 8800 and 7800: the established ranges

The 8800 series remains the standard Cisco UCM desk phone. The CP-8841-K9= has an 800 x 480 colour display, five programmable line keys, a Gigabit PC port and PoE class 2. The CP-8851-W-K9= (white) adds Bluetooth, a side USB port and up to two key expansion modules; the CP-8851NR-K9= is the same phone without a Bluetooth radio. The CP-8861-K9= adds built-in Wi-Fi, two USB ports and up to three key expansion modules. Cisco's 8800 notice listing shows no end-of-sale notice for the 8841, 8851 or 8861. Cisco covers them with a standard 1-year replacement warranty, and the CP-8800-WMK= kit wall-mounts them.

The 7800 series is being retired. Cisco's end-of-sale date for the IP Phone 7821 (CP-7821-K9=, CP-7821-3PCC-K9=) was October 28, 2026, with the Desk Phone 9841 named as its successor. The IP Phone 7861 (CP-7861-3PCC-K9=) reaches end-of-sale on January 23, 2027, superseded by the Desk Phone 9851. They suit adding phones to an existing 7800 site, but for a new fit-out we suggest the 9800 series. The single-line CP-6901-CL-K9= is also end-of-sale (October 28, 2026), with the Desk Phone 9811 as its replacement.

Cordless and mobile: IP DECT 6825 and Wireless Phone 860

For staff who walk, Cisco has two approaches.

  • IP DECT 6825 (standard and Ruggedized IP65): MPP DECT handsets for Webex Calling, BroadWorks, Asterisk and Metaswitch, with a colour display, two SIP lines, Bluetooth LE for headsets and an alarm key for emergency notifications. Cisco quotes up to 17 hours talk time (narrowband) and 200 hours idle. They register to a Cisco IP DECT DBS-110 single-cell or DBS-210 multi-cell base station, sold separately, and the AU part numbers ship with an Australian power adapter. Cisco lists hearing-aid compatibility including Australia S040. Spare batteries are CP-6825-BAT=.
  • Wireless Phone 860 (CP-860-BUN-K9): an Android 13 Wi-Fi smartphone for Cisco UCM or Webex Calling, IP68 rated and drop tested to MIL-STD-810G, with a hot-swappable battery giving up to 12 hours in call. It needs good enterprise Wi-Fi; see our Cisco Wi-Fi access points guide. On UCM it needs an Enhanced UCL or Cisco UWL licence. The CP-860-MCHR-BN multi-charger handles four phones and four batteries.

ATA 191 and 192: keep fax machines and analog phones working

Moving to the NBN or a hosted phone system often leaves a fax machine, door phone or paging amplifier behind. Cisco's analog telephone adapters connect two analog devices to an IP platform. The ATA192-3PW-K9 and ATA191-3PW-K9 are the Multiplatform versions for Webex Calling, BroadWorks, Metaswitch and Asterisk; Cisco states no licence is needed to connect them to third-party call control. The ATA 192 has two Ethernet ports with an integrated router; the ATA 191 has one. Both support fax over IP via T.38. For Cisco UCM, the ATA191-K9 needs one Essential User Connect License per port. All carry a Cisco 1-year limited hardware warranty.

On Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Cisco states the 8841 requires an Enhanced User Connect License (UCL). It supports UCM 12.5 and later.

Yes, with the right version. Choose an MPP model such as the CP-6871-3PCC-K9= or CP-8841-3PCC-K9=, or a Desk Phone 9800, and check your provider supports it. Cisco certifies MPP firmware for Webex Calling and BroadWorks and lists Asterisk and Metaswitch.

Yes. The 6825 registers to a Cisco IP DECT DBS-110 single-cell or DBS-210 multi-cell base station, which connects to the call platform.
