Ubiquiti UDR-5G-Max: 5G Cloud Gateway for Australia

Want the deeper analysis? Read our in-depth UDR-5G-Max review covering Australian carrier bands, real-world 5G expectations and how it compares to the UDR7.

The UniFi Dream Router 5G Max is a desktop cloud gateway with a built-in full-performance 5G modem. It is a complete UniFi network in one box — router, firewall, WiFi 7 access point, 4-port 2.5 GbE switch, UniFi controller and a small Protect NVR — that can take its internet connection from fixed line, from 5G, or from both with automatic failover.

Where an ordinary router treats mobile as a slow backup, the UDR-5G-Max is built to run on 5G as a primary connection: up to 3.4 Gbps downlink on 5G NSA, dual nano-SIM with eSIM support, and HPUE power class 2 for better performance at the edge of coverage.

Will it work on Telstra, Optus and Vodafone?

This is the question that matters most for an Australian buyer, and the answer is yes on all three networks. The UDR-5G-Max supports every 5G and 4G band currently in commercial use in Australia.

BandUsed bySupported
n78 (3500 MHz) — primary 5GTelstra, Optus, VodafoneYes
n5 (850 MHz) — 5G DSSTelstraYes
n28 (700 MHz) — low-band 5GOptus, VodafoneYes
n1 (2100 MHz), n40 (2300 MHz)VariousYes

B3 (1800 MHz) — 4GTelstra, Optus, VodafoneYes
B1 / B5 / B7 / B40 / B42 — 4GVariousYes

Full 5G NR band support is n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n13, n14, n18, n20, n25, n26, n28, n29, n30, n38, n40, n41, n48, n66, n70, n71, n75, n76, n77, n78 and n79.

One honest limitation: this is a Sub-6 device. It does not support mmWave (n258), so in the small number of Australian locations with mmWave 5G it will connect on Sub-6 instead. For the overwhelming majority of sites that is exactly what you want anyway — Sub-6 is what carriers actually deploy at scale.

What the UDR-5G-Max is good for

  • Sites with no fixed line. New premises, rural properties, or anywhere the NBN connection is months away. Run the whole site on 5G from day one.
  • Business-critical failover. Fixed line on the 10G SFP+ WAN, 5G as automatic backup. When the fibre is cut, the site stays up without anyone touching it.
  • Temporary and pop-up sites. Construction offices, events, retail pop-ups and display suites — full UniFi networking that packs down and moves.
  • Remote and regional offices. Managed centrally from the same UniFi console as the rest of your estate, with no truck roll to configure.
  • Replacing a carrier modem. Proper firewall, IDS/IPS, VLANs, VPN and WiFi 7 instead of an ISP-supplied box.

All three run the same 2.3 Gbps IDS/IPS engine, so the real differences are cellular, built-in WiFi and the 10G SFP+ port. If you do not need cellular, the UDR7 gives you the same engine and WiFi 7 for less. If you want a rack-mount gateway with drive bays, look at the UDM Pro Max. Our UniFi cloud gateway comparison and Dream Machine comparison cover the full range.

What you need to get started

  • A data SIM from any Australian carrier or MVNO. Two nano-SIM slots plus eSIM means you can run two carriers and fail over between them.
  • Power. The included 54V DC adapter. Maximum draw is 34.5W excluding PoE output.
  • Nothing else. Routing, firewall, WiFi 7, a 4-port 2.5 GbE switch with one PoE port (15.4W budget), the UniFi controller and a 64 GB microSD for Protect recording are all built in.

Place it in the open rather than in a comms cupboard — it is relying on internal cellular antennas, and steel doors and concrete cost you signal. The 4.7-inch touchscreen shows connection status and signal strength, which makes finding a good spot straightforward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the UDR-5G-Max work on Telstra, Optus and Vodafone?

Yes. It supports n78 (3500 MHz), which all three Australian carriers use as their primary 5G band, plus n5 used by Telstra, n28 used by Optus and Vodafone, and the 4G bands B3 and B28 used by all three.

Does it support mmWave 5G?

No. The UDR-5G-Max is a Sub-6 device covering n1 through n79. It does not support mmWave (n258), so in the small number of Australian mmWave locations it will connect using Sub-6 instead.

How fast is the 5G connection?

Up to 3.4 Gbps downlink and 560 Mbps uplink on 5G NSA, 1.8 Gbps down and 650 Mbps up on 5G standalone, and 1.6 Gbps down on 4G LTE. Real-world speed depends on your carrier, signal and local congestion.

Can I use it as a backup connection rather than the main one?

Yes. Connect your fixed line to the 10G SFP+ or 2.5 GbE WAN port and the gateway will fail over to 5G automatically when the primary connection drops.

How many SIM cards does it take?

Ubiquiti lists (2) nano-SIM and (1) nano-SIM or eSIM, so you can run more than one carrier for redundancy.

Does it include WiFi?

Yes, WiFi 7 with 2x2 MU-MIMO on all three bands: up to 5.7 Gbps on 6 GHz, 4.3 Gbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, covering roughly 160 square metres.

How many devices can it handle?

300+ simultaneous clients and 30+ managed UniFi devices, with 2.3 Gbps IDS/IPS throughput.

Can it record security cameras?

Yes, on a small scale. It ships with a 64 GB microSD card and supports UniFi Protect for five HD, two 2K or one 4K camera. For more cameras you want a dedicated recorder.

Does it have PoE for cameras or access points?

One of the four 2.5 GbE ports supplies PoE with a 15.4W budget, which is enough for a single 802.3af device.

Is there a monthly fee for UniFi?

No. UniFi has no licensing or subscription fees. Your only ongoing cost is the mobile data plan for the SIM.

What is the difference between the UDR-5G-Max and the UDR7?

The UDR-5G-Max has a built-in 5G modem; the UDR7 does not. Otherwise they are closely matched, both offering WiFi 7, 2.3 Gbps IDS/IPS and 10G SFP+. If you do not need cellular, the UDR7 costs less.
