Professional Overview

Speaker cable is not network cable, and using the wrong one is a common and expensive mistake on integrated audio jobs. This is a two-conductor 14 AWG stranded run intended for the loudspeaker side of a UniFi audio system — amplifier to speaker — not for signal or data.

The gauge and the resistance figure are what matter. At 14 AWG the direct current resistance is 8.62 Ω/km, which is low enough that long runs do not waste a meaningful share of the amplifier's output as heat in the cable or noticeably damp the driver. This is the specification to check against run length and speaker impedance when laying out a distributed system: thin cable on a long run costs both volume and control at the speaker.

The jacket is LSZH — low smoke zero halogen — rather than ordinary PVC, and flame rated VW-1. LSZH matters in occupied buildings and enclosed spaces because in a fire it produces markedly less dense smoke and no halogen acid gases, which is increasingly specified for public and commercial premises. Ubiquiti also designs the jacket to strip easily, which on a job with dozens of terminations is a real time saving. Conductors are colour coded black and red so polarity is maintained across a multi-speaker install without ambiguity.

The cable is 6.5 mm in diameter with a 60 mm minimum bend radius and stranded rather than solid conductors, so it tolerates the routing and flexing of a real installation better than solid-core cable would. Each box holds 150 m, measures 340 x 330 x 255 mm and weighs 15 kg. Operating and storage temperature is -20 to 60°C. Australian stock from ARC IP Networks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this cable used for?

Connecting amplifiers to loudspeakers in a UniFi audio installation. It is a two-conductor speaker cable, not a network or signal cable.

What gauge and resistance is it?

14 AWG stranded copper, with a direct current resistance of 8.62 Ω/km.

How long is the run?

150 m per box.

What does LSZH mean and why does it matter?

Low smoke zero halogen. In a fire the jacket produces far less dense smoke and no halogen acid gases than ordinary PVC, which is why it is specified in occupied and enclosed commercial spaces. The flame rating is VW-1.

Is the conductor solid or stranded?

Stranded, which tolerates the bending and routing of a real installation better than solid conductor cable.

What is the minimum bend radius?

60 mm. The jacket diameter is 6.5 mm.

How are the conductors identified?

Two conductors, colour coded black and red, so polarity is consistent across a multi-speaker installation.

What is the box size and weight?

340 x 330 x 255 mm, 15 kg.
