Professional Overview

Every other reader in the UniFi Access range needs a hub behind it. The Ultra does not — the hub is inside the reader. That single design decision changes the installation: one device at the door, one PoE run, one lock cable, and no controller to find space for in a riser or cupboard. For a single door, particularly a retrofit, it removes most of the work.

The integrated lock terminal is rated 12V DC at 1A, with one exit request input alongside it. That is enough for a standard electric strike or a modest magnetic lock plus a request-to-exit button, which covers the large majority of single-door applications. Read the compatibility note carefully though: Ubiquiti states the Ultra is not compatible with standalone Access Hubs, so it cannot be retrofitted into an existing hub-based installation as an additional reader — it is a complete door solution or nothing.

Credentials are NFC card or the UniFi Identity mobile app, over BLE 4.2 and Ethernet. NFC runs at 13.56 MHz with a read range under 50 mm — notably longer than the 30 mm of the G2 readers — and supports ISO 14443A, 14443B and 15693, NFC tag types 1 to 5, and MIFARE Classic and DESFire. Capacity is 3,000 users, which is the figure that determines whether it suits a site or whether a hub-based design is needed.

It is built for outdoor mounting: IP55, polycarbonate and aluminium alloy on a stainless steel mount, operating from -30 to 40°C at 5 to 90% non-condensing humidity, with ESD protection of ±8 kV air and ±4 kV contact. Power is PoE+ at 44–57V DC drawing up to 18W — note PoE+ rather than standard PoE, because the reader is also driving the lock. Wall and gang box mounts are included, junction box optional. Certifications include UL 294 at Level I across all four categories, CAN/ULC-60839-11-1 Grade I, CE, FCC, IC, SRRC and Anatel. Australian stock from ARC IP Networks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the UA-Ultra need a separate Access Hub?

No. The hub is built in, with an integrated lock terminal and exit request input. Ubiquiti also notes it is not compatible with standalone Access Hubs.

Can I add it to an existing UniFi Access installation that uses hubs?

No. Because it is not compatible with standalone Access Hubs, it is a complete single-door solution rather than an additional reader for a hub-based system.

What lock can it drive?

Its integrated lock terminal is rated 12V DC at 1A, suitable for a standard electric strike or a modest magnetic lock.

How many users does it support?

Up to 3,000.

Does it need PoE or PoE+?

PoE+, at 44–57V DC drawing up to 18W. The higher class is required because the reader also powers the lock.

What unlock methods does it support?

NFC card and the UniFi Identity mobile app, over BLE 4.2. NFC runs at 13.56 MHz with a read range under 50 mm.

Can it be mounted outdoors?

Yes. It is IP55 rated for indoor and outdoor use, operating from -30 to 40°C at 5 to 90% non-condensing humidity.

Is it certified for access control?

Yes — UL 294 at Level I for destructive attack, line security, endurance and standby power, plus CAN/ULC-60839-11-1 Grade I, CE, FCC, IC, SRRC and Anatel.
