The Mercusys MR80X is an AX3000 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router with 160 MHz channels, giving 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. A Qualcomm Wi-Fi 6 chipset with a 64-bit dual-core CPU drives it, and it adds VPN server and client support with a kill switch, four 5 dBi antennas and four gigabit ports.

MR80X overview

The MR80X doubles Wi-Fi 6 channel width to 160 MHz, which Mercusys says lifts it to AX3000: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz plus 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, around 2.5 times the 1200 Mbps of an 80 MHz 2x2 Wi-Fi 5 router in Mercusys's comparison. Use of 160 MHz, OFDMA, MU-MIMO, 1024-QAM, BSS Colour and Target Wake Time requires clients that support them, and 160 MHz on 5 GHz may be unavailable in some regions because of regulation. The speeds are physical signal rates from IEEE 802.11 and are not guaranteed in practice.

Inside, Mercusys specifies a Qualcomm Wi-Fi 6 chipset combining a 64-bit dual-core CPU with a 12-thread programmable network processor. Mercusys quotes stable connections for up to 256 devices, a combined 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz total measured under laboratory conditions. With OFDMA and MU-MIMO it claims four times the network capacity in traffic-dense environments, a figure that refers to the 802.11ax goal of at least four times the average throughput per station in dense deployments.

The MR80X adds a full VPN feature set: VPN server and VPN client for OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec and WireGuard, and a kill switch that cuts internet access if the VPN drops so nothing leaks over an unencrypted link. Mercusys's local-network tests show up to 180 Mbps and 130 Mbps for its two highlighted VPN protocols, and it notes that real-world speeds depend on your network configuration and that VPN subscriptions are bought separately from each provider.

Four external 5 dBi antennas, two per band, have integrated signal amplifiers and beamforming to reach further through walls. Wired ports are one gigabit WAN and three gigabit LAN. The router runs in Router or Access Point mode, supports IPTV (IGMP Proxy and Snooping, Bridge, Tag VLAN), Smart Connect, guest networks on both bands, AP isolation, airtime fairness, WPA3 (with WPA3-capable clients) and parental controls with profiles, online time limits, website blocking and an internet pause. It is EasyMesh-compatible; Mercusys warns that connections to other brands may fail because of firmware conflicts and that the router lacks Wi-Fi EasyMesh certification.

Mercusys reports lab reliability tests on this model, including at least 1,500 hours of stability testing, 10,000 power cycles, 7,200 hours in extreme environments and 30 drop cycles from 80 cm onto concrete. Management is through the Mercusys app, the web interface or Mercusys ID, with CWMP, ISP presets and ping and traceroute diagnostics. The MR80X measures 208.8 x 171.6 x 41.7 mm, mounts on a desk or wall, and has a combined WPS/Reset button and a single system LED. These details follow hardware version 2.3 on Mercusys Australia.
