The TP-Link OC400 is TP-Link's largest Omada hardware controller. The rack-width appliance centrally manages up to 1,000 Omada access points, 200 Omada switches and 100 Omada routers with up to 30,000 clients, on-premises with free cloud access through the Omada app or web UI. It has a quad-core A72 at 2.2 GHz, 8 GB DDR4 and 32 GB eMMC, two 10G SFP+ ports, four Gigabit RJ45 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, a console port and two internal fixed power supplies for redundancy.

OC400 overview

The OC400 is TP-Link's Omada Hardware Controller for the largest Omada SDN deployments. TP-Link says it supports centralised management for up to 1,000 Omada access points, 200 Omada switches and 100 Omada routers, with up to 30,000 clients, and that cloud service comes with no licence fees when using the OC400. Like the smaller OC300, it combines on-premises management, for local monitoring and control of devices, with free cloud access through the Omada app or web UI from anywhere. TP-Link's datasheet describes the Omada SDN platform as integrating access points, switches and gateways with 100% centralised cloud management, creating a highly scalable network controlled from a single interface.

The datasheet adds DeltaStream GPON OLTs to the device types: up to 10 OLTs, specifically the DS-P7001-04 and DS-P7001-08, with the supported switch count reduced by five for each OLT added. System limits include 100 sites, 1,000 accounts (500 local and 500 cloud), 60,000 vouchers and 60,000 local users, 500 WLAN groups, 24 SSIDs per site and up to 4,090 simultaneously used VLANs per site depending on switch capacity. Per site, the controller allows 64 router ACL entries, 64 policy routing entries, 64 session limit and bandwidth control entries, 32 port forwarding entries and 64 RADIUS profiles. TP-Link notes that actual management scale varies with network environment, bandwidth and settings.

The hardware is built for scale and resilience. Inside are a quad-core A72 processor at 2.2 GHz, 8 GB of DDR4 memory, 4 MB NOR flash and 32 GB eMMC storage. Interfaces are two 1/10G SFP+ ports, four 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports, two USB 3.0 ports and one RJ45 console port, plus a Kensington lock, reset button and ground screw. Two internal fixed power supplies provide redundant power, which TP-Link says offers a reliable networking architecture, and both run from 100-240 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Maximum consumption is 22.8 W with no USB device connected or 33.1 W with both USB ports in use. The OC400 has one fan, measures 440 x 180 x 44 mm (a full rack width, 1U high) and ships with a rackmount kit.

Management features include multi-site and multi-tenant management with role, site and device privileges, site and controller migration, account management, backup and restore, auto backup and a customised UI. Device management covers automatic discovery, batch configuration, online and batch firmware upgrades, reboot, PoE and WLAN schedules, DDNS, SNMP and SSH. Monitoring includes a custom dashboard, performance and switch statistics, network topology and network map, custom device and client tables, insights into known clients, past connections, past portal authorisations and rogue APs, and logs with alerts, events and custom notifications.

For the network itself, the controller configures wired and wireless networks, ACL, URL filtering and attack defence, routing, NAT, session limits and bandwidth control, SSL, WireGuard, IPsec, L2TP, PPTP and OpenVPN VPN, captive portals with voucher, local user, SMS, RADIUS or external portal server, 802.1X and RADIUS authentication, MAC authentication and accounting. It is rated for 0 to 40 degrees C operation and lists CE and FCC certification on the AU product page, with RoHS added in the datasheet. In the box are the OC400, a quick installation guide, an Ethernet cable, a power cord and a rackmount kit.
