The TP-Link Deco M4 (1-pack) is a single Deco M4 unit: an AC1200 dual-band mesh Wi-Fi device with 867 Mbps on 5 GHz, 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and two gigabit WAN/LAN auto-sensing ports. Use it as a standalone router or access point, or add it to an existing Deco network, since TP-Link says the Deco M4 works with every other Deco model.

Deco M4 (1-pack) overview

This is the Deco M4 (1-pack), which contains a single Deco M4 unit. The most common reason to buy one unit is to grow a Deco network you already own: TP-Link states that the Deco M4 is compatible with every other Deco model to form a mesh network, and that coverage can be expanded at any time by adding more Decos. Once added, the new unit joins the same network name and your devices automatically connect to the fastest Deco as you move around. A single Deco M4 can also stand alone as the main router for a smaller space, or run in Access Point Mode to add Wi-Fi to a wired network. TP-Link publishes its coverage figure for the 3-pack only and does not state a coverage area for one unit.

The Deco M4 is an AC1200 dual-band Wi-Fi 5 unit. Its 5 GHz radio supports IEEE 802.11ac/n/a at up to 867 Mbps and its 2.4 GHz radio supports 802.11n/b/g at up to 300 Mbps, which TP-Link totals as speeds of up to 1167 Mbps. Inside are two antennas that form a signal-boosting array, beamforming that concentrates wireless signal strength towards clients to expand range, and MU-MIMO for serving multiple MU-MIMO clients at once. TP-Link rates capacity as medium and says the Deco M4 can provide lag-free connections for up to 100 devices, citing multi-application testing it conducted in December 2018 covering 1080p, 720p and 4K streaming, web browsing, smart home devices, IP camera streaming and high-speed downloading.

Unlike some entry-level Decos, the M4 has gigabit wired ports: two gigabit Ethernet ports per unit, both with WAN/LAN auto-sensing. When the single unit is your main router, one port connects to your modem and the other serves a wired device such as a TV, console or PC. When it is a satellite in a larger Deco network, one port can carry a gigabit Ethernet backhaul to another Deco, which TP-Link describes as optional, with wireless connections and Ethernet backhaul working together to link the units. Supported WAN types are Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP, and IPTV support includes IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge and tag VLAN.

Security comes from an SPI firewall and access control, with WPA-Personal and WPA2-Personal Wi-Fi encryption, and there is a guest network on each of the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands. Parental controls in the Deco app include per-person profiles with custom time limits, age-based filter levels, URL filtering, insights into which sites children visit and for how long, and a one-tap button to suspend internet access for everyone. QoS by device lets you choose which devices get priority. Other listed functions are port forwarding, UPnP, a DHCP server with address reservation and a client list, TP-Link DDNS, OTA firmware upgrades through your TP-Link ID, and IPv4 and IPv6.

Setting up a Deco M4 means unpacking it, downloading the Deco app on an Android 5.0 or later or iOS 9.0 or later device and following the on-screen directions; the app then lets you manage the network at home or away. You can also pair the Deco M4 with Amazon Alexa for voice commands. The unit measures 90.7 x 90.7 x 190 mm, operates from 0 to 40 degrees C, and its certifications include RCM. In Australia, APC magazine gave the Deco M4 four out of five stars in 2020, according to TP-Link's awards listing. The 1-pack box contains one Deco M4R unit, one RJ45 Ethernet cable, one power adapter and one quick installation guide. TP-Link's AU page lists hardware versions V2, V2.40, V3 and V4; the specifications here are those published on that page.
