The TP-Link TD-W9970 is a 300 Mbps Wireless N USB VDSL/ADSL modem router. Its modem supports VDSL2 with G.vector and G.INP, which TP-Link rates at VDSL speeds of up to 100 Mbps, plus ADSL2+, ADSL2 and ADSL. It has single-band 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with two 5 dBi fixed antennas, four 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports including a LAN/WAN port for fibre or cable access, a USB 2.0 port for file and media sharing, and up to ten IPSec VPN tunnels.

TD-W9970 overview

The TD-W9970 is TP-Link's 300 Mbps Wireless N USB VDSL/ADSL modem router, a compact white desktop unit that combines a DSL modem, a single-band Wi-Fi router and a USB sharing port. TP-Link calls its connectivity versatile: with DSL and LAN/WAN ports it is fully compatible with VDSL2, ADSL2+, ADSL2 and ADSL, and it also works with fibre or cable access through Ethernet WAN (EWAN). On VDSL it quotes superfast broadband speeds of up to 100 Mbps. Listed standards are ITU-T G.993.2 for VDSL2 with G.993.5 vectoring and G.998.4 G.INP, full-rate ANSI T1.413 Issue 2, G.992.1, G.994.1 and G.995.1 for ADSL, G.992.3 for ADSL2 and G.992.5 for ADSL2+. ATM/PPP support covers PPPoA, PPPoE and IPoA with up to eight PVCs, and ATM QoS traffic shaping supports UBR, CBR, VBR-rt and VBR-nrt.

Wi-Fi is Wireless N (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) on the 2.4 GHz band only, from 2.400 to 2.4835 GHz, and TP-Link rates it at 300 Mbps. Two fixed omni-directional external antennas of 5 dBi each provide the coverage, which TP-Link describes as far-reaching in every direction, and transmission power is under 20 dBm EIRP. Wireless security covers 64/128-bit WEP, WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK plus wireless MAC filtering, and there is a guest network and a wireless schedule. A Wi-Fi on/off switch sits alongside a power on/off button and a combined WPS/reset button.

The rear panel has one RJ11 DSL port, four 10/100 Mbps RJ45 Ethernet ports, one of which serves as the LAN/WAN port for EWAN connections, and one USB 2.0 port. TP-Link positions that USB port for easy sharing of files and media with family and friends, with storage sharing, an FTP server and a media server listed. Advanced features include parental control, DHCP and DHCP relay, NAT, PVC and Ethernet port grouping, static routing, DNS relay, DDNS, IGMP snooping v1/v2/v3 and IGMP multicast, and UPnP. QoS covers WMM and IP-based bandwidth control.

The TD-W9970 goes further on VPN than many basic modem routers. Besides PPTP, L2TP and IPSec pass-through, TP-Link lists ten IPSec VPN tunnels for LAN-to-LAN connections, with main and aggressive negotiation modes, DES, 3DES and AES128/192/256 encryption, MD5 and SHA1 authentication, manual or IKE key management, dead peer detection and perfect forward secrecy. Security also includes a NAT firewall, an SPI firewall and MAC, IP and URL filtering. For IPv6 it runs an IPv4/IPv6 dual stack with DS-Lite, 6RD and 6to4 tunnels and PPPoEv6, DHCPv6 and static IPv6 connection types. Port forwarding covers virtual server, port triggering, UPnP, DMZ and manage control.

Management is through a web interface that TP-Link says sets up in minutes, plus remote management, Telnet, a command line interface, SSL for TR-069, SNMP v1/v2c, CWMP (TR-069), web-based firmware upgrades and diagnostic tools. The TD-W9970 runs from a 12 V DC 1 A supply, measures 195 x 130 x 36 mm, operates from 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity and is CE certified. TP-Link's AU page lists hardware versions V3 and V4. The package contains the TD-W9970, an external splitter, an RJ-11 telephone line, an RJ-45 Ethernet cable, a quick installation guide and a power adapter.
