The TP-Link M8550 is a 5G AXE3600 Mobile Wi-Fi with 5G download speeds of up to 3.4 Gbps and tri-band Wi-Fi 6E (2880 Mbps on 6 GHz and 5 GHz, 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). It adds a Gigabit WAN/LAN port, a 2.4-inch touch screen, WireGuard VPN, two TS-9 antenna ports, a 4680 mAh battery and support for up to 32 devices.

M8550 overview

The M8550 is TP-Link's 5G AXE3600 Mobile Router, sold in Australia as the 5G Mobile Wi-Fi M8550. TP-Link quotes 5G speeds of up to 3.4 Gbps download and 900 Mbps upload, and 4G speeds of up to 1.6 Gbps download and 200 Mbps upload. Its footnote is clear that actual mobile broadband speeds vary with network configuration, signal strength and subscription terms. TP-Link describes it as plug and play for 5G, 4G and 3G, and names holiday travel, business trips and home or office Wi-Fi as typical uses.

TP-Link's specification lists two network-type sets. The EU Version covers 5G bands N1, N3, N5, N7, N8, N20, N28, N38, N40, N41, N71, N75, N76, N77 and N78; FDD-LTE B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20, B28, B32 and B71; TDD-LTE B38, B40, B41, B42 and B43; and 3G HSPA+, HSPA and WCDMA on B1, B5 and B8. A separate US Version with a different band list also appears on the page. Confirm which version you are buying and that its bands suit your network before deploying. The device needs a SIM card, which is sold separately, as is any SD card.

Wi-Fi is tri-band Wi-Fi 6E (IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax) with signal rates of 2880 Mbps on 6 GHz, 2880 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. The band modes are 2.4 GHz only, 5 GHz only, 6 GHz only, 2.4 GHz plus 5 GHz, or 2.4 GHz plus 6 GHz. TP-Link says Wi-Fi 6E is designed to boost coverage, speed and total capacity, and up to 32 devices can connect at once, subject to the note that IEEE 802.11 signal rates are physical rates and that throughput and device counts vary with network conditions, client limits and environment. Security is WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK with wireless MAC filtering, and transmission power is under 20 dBm on 2.4 GHz and under 23 dBm on 5 GHz.

A Gigabit WAN/LAN port can give a laptop a direct, stable wired connection or bring in a wired WAN link. The USB-C port handles high-speed data and rapid charging at 5 V 3 A, 9 V 2 A or 12 V 1.5 A, and TP-Link says that running it from USB-C with the battery removed boosts Wi-Fi, turning the M8550 into a home or office router. Two TS-9 antenna ports allow external antennas for signal enhancement alongside the internal antenna.

A 2.4-inch TFT touch screen shows data usage against your budget, battery life, signal strength, Wi-Fi status and connected users, and the display can be customised. Its menu includes Device Info, Power Saving, VPN, Wi-Fi Band, Network Mode and Data Roaming. For people working remotely, built-in WireGuard VPN gives encrypted access to corporate networks without installing a VPN on each device. A micro SD card slot accepts cards up to 2 TB.

Power comes from a 4680 mAh rechargeable battery; TP-Link says the battery and a power saving function help with all-day travel, and notes that actual battery time varies with the user environment. The unit measures 135 x 73.7 x 20.5 mm and has a single power button. Default network services are the web server (80/443), DNS, DHCP and app-management ports 20001 and 20002. It is CE certified. The box contains the 5G AXE3600 Mobile Router M8550, a power adapter, a USB-C cable, the 4680 mAh battery and a quick installation guide.
