The UISP Fiber WiFi in depth

A GPON CPE with a built-in WiFi router

The UF-WIFI is GPON customer-premises equipment with a built-in WiFi router. It connects to the fibre network through an SC/APC, ITU-G.984 GPON WAN port and provides (4) GbE RJ45 LAN ports for wired devices. Its software mode is an ONU/ONT layer 2/3 Ethernet switch, with services including NAT, bridging and routing, firewall features, a web server, telnet and application passthrough features.

Wireless and optical performance

The built-in radio supports 802.11 b/g/n on 2.4 GHz with 2 x 2 MIMO, 20 dBm output power and a 1 dBi antenna, with data rates of up to 300 Mbps (MCS0 - MCS15, HT 20/40). Wireless security options include WEP, WPA-PSK and WPA-Enterprise (WPA/WPA2/WPA3, TKIP/AES). On the fibre side, the nominal bitrate is 2.5 Gbps downstream and 1.2 Gbps upstream, using a 1310 nm TX and 1490 nm RX wavelength, with a maximum range of 20 km. GEM port encryption is supported.

Management, power and build

Management is by Ethernet in-band or PON, with a dashboard, monitoring, alarms and logs, plus remote reset, remote reboot, remote firmware upgrade and VLAN support. Three PON signal LEDs indicate optical signal strength. The unit is powered by a 24V DC jack with a universal AC/DC adapter (100–240V AC, 24V/0.5A) or by 24V passive PoE, and draws a maximum of 7W. The enclosure is UV-stabilised polycarbonate, weighs 190 g and has an operating temperature range of -10 to 45° C.
